Here’s a similar story I heard from someone close to me.
The person decided to stop doing self-employed work and duly let HMRC know, via an online form similar to a tax return but somewhat simpler. As their other income was below the threshold for tax, they didn’t need to submit a tax return. All this was done well before the Jan 31st deadline for online returns (though paper returns needed to be in by Nov 30th of the year before).
A few email reminders came before the Jan 31st deadline but were generic in nature. Once the date passed, however, notice came of a £100 fine for not submitting on time, a sum which would increase sharply for each three months (?) that went by without a return being made.
The person called the HMRC line and went through various selection hoops before opting to wait to speak to a human. The call cost £15 for the 90 min’s it lasted, most of which was canned music and assurances that the call was “important” to HMRC! Finally, they spoke with a foreign-sounding man, who was helpful and said he would stop the fine; written confirmation of this duly came shortly after, as well as confirmation that no return was necessary.
I suppose we should be thankful for small mercies but the £15 was not refunded, nor the opportunity cost of the 90+ min’s spent on the call; not forgetting the anxiety caused by the threat of an open-ended fine.
