No doubt pensioners will be targeted in Rachel’s next money grab seeing as she thinks they are all millionaires.
The government has all the data regarding how many pensioners are likely to be around and for how long. The ‘baby boomers’ numbers should not be a surprise, they should have been factored into the spending for now and future years, same as when this baby boomer wave have passed on and there should be a much smaller number of pensioners (those currently paying for the boomers)
The government can’t suddenly say it didn’t know there would be an increase in the number of pensioners and they should have made provisions for it.
Why not start now by using a percentage of the NI contributions to go to a pension only department, not to be used for anything but pension payments.
It will take a while to get going but like the nuclear power stations, the sooner you start the sooner they become viable.
The anti pensioner lot like to say pensioners are costing more than they have contributed. What about all the contributions made by those who don’t make it to pension age, their contributions stay in the ‘pot’ as well but never seem to get a mention.
Pensioners usually spend their pensions on things like food, energy, council costs and so on so I wonder how much of each £100 paid out in pensions gets paid back in various taxes, not just income tax but taxes from petrol, vat, stealth taxes and when you think, the tax paid on a gallon of petrol is not the only money the government get from it, they get taxes from the petrol companies, garages, all the workers involved in the petrol industry pay income tax and many more. I wouldn’t be surprised if 90% of the price of a gallon of petrol ends up with the government.
Same with pensions, most will end up back with the government via the multitude of taxes on everything and everyone.
Also, boomers are mainly on the old low pension and not the much higher one the msm like to use saying things like pensioners get bumper rise. Those on the old second class pension get thousands per year less.
