With all votes counted, 50.4% of those who voted said yes to the proposal, while 49.6% rejected it.

Switzerland has a long tradition of protecting its citizens’ privacy. The banking secrecy laws, now much diluted, were designed to shield an individual’s personal finances from the prying eyes of the state.

Pieth says that Switzerland benefited from its neutrality during World War II by purchasing vast amounts of gold from Allied and Axis powers. It exchanged the precious metal for Swiss francs, the only free convertible currency at the time outside the American dollar.23 Jun 2019

A a constable may arrest without warrant any person who fails to produce an ID card when demanded . It is an offence to fail to produce an ID when required by a Constable or other State officer designated by the Secretary of State .

Failure to comply will incur a period of imprisonment of 6 months and unlimited fine .

Coming our way soon … or not – petition over 2.3 million now …

“In a common law legal system like that of England and Wales, the general rule is that there is no obligation for a person to provide identification papers on demand unless they are a foreign national subject to immigration control and have refused to present their documents to a UK Border Force officer, or the request is part of a lawful stop-and-identify procedure, or is made by a court in civil proceedings under specific rules about disclosure of documents. The recent announcement of a future digital ID scheme suggests this practice may change, but currently, for most citizens, there is no general legal duty to carry or present ID to authorities on demand. “

Marky – thx – very hard to watch due to the sound . The big problem Lord Starkey presents is that he is good at pointing out the decline and failures – but not so much on remedies .

He does remind me of my old law professors in seminars making heads spin … particularly of those who had failed to prepare ….

Time for Digital ID: A New Consensus for a State That Works

It is time for digital ID. The British public is running out of patience with a state that does not work, where interactions with public services are beset by inconveniences and delays even as outcomes slip and costs rise.

Citizens are rightly expecting the government to deliver common-sense solutions or make way. Digital ID is one such solution – and there is a massive political upside for those who embrace it. Build a system that works and voters will respond.

Public-opinion research commissioned by the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change (TBI), published for the first time in this paper, shows that digital ID enjoys majority support among the British public, with 62 per cent in favour and just 19 per cent opposed.

Potential Reform UK voters, despite the party leadership’s opposition to the idea, are twice as likely to support digital ID than they are to oppose it.

Just got home and checking the BBC News channel for the footie results (wish I hadn’t) when I came across this…

“A woman has been raped by a group of men in a churchyard in Banbury. The woman, in her thirties, was attacked in the grounds of St Mary’s Church and the surrounding area of the town centre in the early hours of Sunday morning…”

The police then go on to appeal to the public to “identify the offenders”.

So, the police are clearly desperate to capture this gang of rapists, but (for some inexplicable reason) fail to give us any sort of description of the perpetrators.

Now, I wonder why that might be…
