A campaign in the Islamic world against the “scandalous act” of a British gambling firm calling itself Mecca Ltd challenged the Foreign Office’s cultural sensitivities.

There were more than half a dozen casinos, amusement arcades and social clubs named Mecca in the Glasgow telephone directory alone, it was pointed out by the Muslim World League, an insult “to the holy city of Makkah”.

A British diplomat based in Saudi Arabia suggested that since the common UK spelling was “Mecca” it could be argued the clubs were not named after the birthplace of the prophet Mohammed.

In London, an attache from the Pakistani embassy raised the issue with the Foreign Office. Muslim groups, she said, “wished it to be known that Islamic people found it offensive that the name Mecca was being used by the company”.

          https://www.theguardian.com/uk/2011/dec/30/gems-national-archives-30-year-rule

“I called on the secretary general of the ministry of foreign affairs, Labaki, [who] told me with a chuckle that the prime minister had passed him a letter from the Sunni Mufti of Beirut complaining that it had been revealed there was a cabaret in London called ‘Mecca’. The Mufti thought this was in bad taste, indeed blasphemous.

“Labaki was highly amused by all this and said that as far as he was concerned he did not mind if there was a brothel in London called ‘The Vatican’. He had merely been instructed by the prime minister to take this up. He would now report that he had done so.”

I’ve never understood the problem with the name Crusaders. Correct me if I’m wrong, but the Holy Land was invaded by Arabs. The crusades were an effort to restore the status quo. I seem to remember that the UK got much opprobrium for colonising great parts of the world, eventually having to give the lands back to the indigenous people. So why aren’t the Arabs the bad guys too? (hint: oil money buys a lot of influence – and politicians as well)

“”Sportswashing” (often confused with “white wash”) is the practice of using high-profile sports to improve a country’s reputation, often to distract from human rights concerns. Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) has been accused of this through massive investments in LIV Golf, Formula 1, and football”

British Businesses to Save over £400m a Year as Government Slashes Electricity Costs
Around 500 of the UK’s most energy-intensive businesses are set to save up to £420 million per year on their electricity bills from next April, as the Government takes decisive action to slash industrial energy costs.

    https://www.gov.uk/government/news/british-businesses-to-save-over-400m-a-year-as-government-slashes-electricity-costs

Some of these businesses currently pay the highest industrial electricity prices in the G7, making it harder to stay competitive on the international stage, which is why the Government has taken decisive action to deliver this relief and level the playing field for industry.

They are saying on GBN that the French claim to have stopped 40,000 people crossing the channel.

Did these 40,000 then turn round and go back home, never to be seen again….or did they simply catch the next dinghy coming over.

In truth, the French make absolutely NO difference to the number popping over.
We shouldn’t pay them a penny never mind another half £billion.

Manchester is developing the UK’s first purpose-built, majority LGBTQ+ extra care social rent housing scheme in Whalley Range, scheduled for completion in summer 2027. The £37 million project on Russell Road, led by Great Places and partners including LGBT Foundation, will provide 80 one and two-bedroom apartments for people over 55, along with 40 shared ownership homes, aiming to reduce isolation
          https://www.placenorthwest.co.uk/whalley-ranges-37m-lgbtq-resi-underway/

“Working with the LGBT Foundation, we know that older LGBTQ+ people worry about being able to access appropriate and inclusive housing later in life.

“Although we hope all older people’s accommodation is welcoming to everyone, this scheme will provide safe, secure, and affordable housing for LGBTQ+ people to live in dignity.”

“In 2025, with LGBTQ+ communities facing increasing pressure, safe and inclusive spaces like this are more essential than ever. Older LGBTQ+ people are disproportionately affected by isolation, discrimination, and poor health, often without any traditional support.

The project team comprises Mosaic Town Planning, Simon Fenton Partnerships, SGi Consulting Engineers, OFR Consultants, Urban Green, SK Transport, Design for Security, Energy Counsel, and Azymuth Acoustics.

Here’s how to handle this French money for stopping boats fiasco.

Tell the French we will give them £100 million a year.
Tell them that every dinghy boy who makes it over the Channel will knock say £25,000 off their money. A typical boatload of 70 which they escort to British waters would cost them £1.750,000
Perhaps with that incentive they may find ways of stopping them.
Currently all that is happening is they may be delayed by having to catch a later boat if one actually gets stopped so the numbers coming over remain the same.

2022 – Today the BBC journalists Michael Keohan and Colin Campbell released a shocking report on the channel crossings. It showed people smugglers selling their wares brazenly in the migrant camps and many children living in unsafe and dangerous conditions, as well as—this is breathtaking—a free French public bus service that migrants can use to travel directly from the camps to the Dunkirk departure beaches. Will my right hon. Friend allow a statement on the issue of tackling the small boat crossings and the Government’s response in their work with France?
