Peterborough Hospital

Read this BBC report and you would be given the distinct impression that the utter shambles of the NHS PFI schemes are in fact a Tory led Coalition (To use the preferred BBC moniker) disaster….and you would also not realise that Hinchingbrooke Hospital would have closed had it not been privatised.

You would have no idea that Peterborough Hospital was a Labour Government plan, read the article and it deliberately places all the blame within the last two years….in other words …nothing to do with Labour.

This is nothing less than a highly politicised attempt to protect Labour and smear the Tories.

We all know of course that the NHS is safe in Labour hands…despite hospitals being ‘immune to the sound of pain’ under them.

The Independent tells it like it is:

‘A hospital now losing £44m a year was allowed to go ahead with a private finance deal to build new premises despite the Government being warned that the project was unsustainable.’

‘It is embarrassing for Labour because, at the time of the approval, Andy Burnham was a Minister of State in the Department of Health. He is now shadow Health Secretary.’

“This was a disastrous Labour PFI blunder. Labour was warned repeatedly by their own regulator that this PFI deal could bankrupt Peterborough Hospital but they pressed on regardless.”

This  BBC report…not a mention of Labour or a Labour politician…however it does say:

‘In response to the inquiry, Prime Minister David Cameron apologised for the “truly dreadful” mistreatment and neglect.’

This BBC report also gives virtually no clue that Stafford Hospital was a case of massive Labour government neglect and incompetence.

This BBC report…which mentions Labour but only to pass the buck to the hospital management….

‘It also achieved the elite foundation trust status, which is given to the best-performing parts of the health service.

Its bid was approved by another regulator Monitor and signed off in June 2007 by Andy Burnham, who was then a junior minister but later became health secretary and now holds the shadow post in opposition.

In fact, it was the decision by the board to go for foundation trust status that contributed to much of the cost-cutting drive that undermined care.’

I imagine that if you look at many of the BBC’s reports a pattern might emerge….Labour involvement is quietly sidelined with minimal comment whilst any Tory involvement is twisted to turn responsibility onto them.

Reds On Top Of The Bed

Dame Helen Mirren, once of the Socialist Worker‘s Party tells us: “I was never a left-winger, actually,” she told Time Out. “I was a pretend left-winger because it was more interesting than being a right-winger.  I never really embraced the ideology because socialists were so sexist and racist.”

How true…it seems:

The BBC were happy to give some good publicity to this junket backed by the Socialist Worker’s Party:   Slutwalk London: ‘Yes means yes and no means no’

And, as ‘Notasheep’ points out, the BBC works closely with SWP supporters:

‘Why nothing about this case on the BBC? It’s not as though the Socialist Workers Party is unknown to them. A regular on the BBC is ‘comedian’ Mark Steel, a long time SWP member, albeit one who resigned from the party in 2007, long after he started to make his hugely amusing appearances on BBC radio. The ‘Right To Work’ campaign that the BBC gave huge prominence to last year was a SWP offshoot.
I think it safe to say that an equivalent sex scandal at the BNP would be headline news on the BBC so why not when it’s the equally vile SWP?

Now why might the BBC have a soft spot for the extreme-left Socialist Workers Party? Who can say.’

The BBC aren’t so happy to report on a woman who claimed to have been raped by a senior member of the SWP, and who rather than going to the police accepted their kind offer of an internal investigation or ‘trial’ by their own Disputes Committee…with the inevitable outcome that the senior member of the SWP, who knew the panel of ‘judges‘, walked away scot free leaving the woman in great distress: SWP Rape Scandal Developments

The transcript of said ‘trial’ is here.

From inside the den of iniquity itself:
‘The reason that the DC (Disputes Committee) thought it was fit to investigate this case is precisely because it did not recognise rape within relationship, acquaintance rape, date rape or whatever you want to call this woman’s experience as a ‘real’ rape.  Part of their disbelief may have been because they were friends or long standing colleagues of Delta.  Part of their disbelief may be because the party’s position on women’s oppression is flawed, it has not kept up to date with the most current theories in feminism and it has not kept itself at the forefront of the battle against women’s oppression.  Part of their problem was that they are human, they live in this world, in this time and, despite protestations to the contrary, they were not immune to the rape myths that exist in this society.
I have also faced the argument that the DC has investigated 9 rapes in the past (I’m not clear on how recently these ‘investigations’ were conducted).  I believe this argument is put forward to reassure comrades of the competency of the DC.  I don’t find it reassuring in the slightest; in fact I find it terrifying.’

Why did the BBC not cover this extraordinary story?

Just how many of the BBC were or still are members of the Socialist Worker’s Party?

Could that be the reason this story seems to be non-existent at the BBC?

They must have discussed it at an editorial meeting…if so who spiked the report and why?

Nick Cohen suggests the end of the SWP is possibly not far often and to be greatly welcomed…if so far unnoticed by most of the MSM…can he mean the BBC?:

‘A few Labour historians are more hopeful. They believe the SWP is dying and a foul Leninist tradition is dying with it. If they are right, not only will the air on the left be sweeter to breathe, but British feminism will have won a notable battle without the mainstream media even noticing.’

The Guardian has it:
Why ‘leftists revolutionaries’ are not the best feminists
The rape allegation against a member of the SWP is hardly surprising, given the party’s attitude towards women.

The Daily Mail has it:
A show of hands! That’s how the Socialist Workers Party cleared a comrade of rape

The Independent has it:

Ranks of the Socialist Workers Party are split over handling of rape allegation

Lots of papers have it….but seemingly not the BBC.

Immigrant Theft?

The BBC had a small programme on Roma immigration hidden away on the World Service but played at 0400 on Saturday morning on R4.

Definitely worth a listen whether you are pro or anti-mass immigration.  Shame the BBC hides such a revealing programme away.  I can only imagine that once they had listened to it they realised it was too likely to bolster the ‘anti’ case.

Two things of great note….one that David Blunkett admits that we have too many immigrants who are, by virtue of their great numbers and special demands, undermining society…and that ‘you ain’t seen nothing yet’.

The programme revealed many things about the Roma and also the BBC’s attitude….here the presenter, Simon Cox, was having a problem deciding whether to present the real facts or the BBC ‘facts’ about immigration.  He is clearly schooled in the BBC ‘immigration speak‘…but couldn’t help the facts getting in the way of another tale of poor immigrants facing discrimination.

Many Roma children are being taken into care, at great cost.  Why?

It is we are told, a conflict between the Roma and the English State….a cultural clash.

There are huge problems…a different culture, language and attitude to children…it’s very complicated…the Roma are easily misunderstood.

The children often don’t get fed enough, or don’t go to school or to the dentist or the doctor, there’s physical chastisement and they can be sent out begging on the streets.

Their culture is at odds with Britain’s far more protective attitudes…its Anglo- Saxon domesticity and desire for boundaries.

The BBC seem to push the case that Roma cultural attitudes to children should be recognised and accepted…isn’t that where we came in with Rochdale, female genital mutilation and witchcraft?  Turn a blind eye to criminal behaviour because ‘it’s their culture‘.  ‘Cultural cringe’.

Cox advances the BBC line…that any talk of immigrants coming here for reasons not wholly legitimate is ‘falling into negative stereotyping’.

Strangely he applies that to a Roma who has an in-depth knowledge of the situation and states that they often come here purely for economic advantage…not running from discrimination or abuse as the BBC so often suggest….though many do so suffer.

As even the Czech ambassador admits…..‘The welfare system in Britain is quite generous‘.

Here’s what the Roma said: ‘They come here to get child benefit, to get money from government, some would like to work but some just use system for the money, it’s really bad but this is why they are coming here because they can get money for each child.’

Here’s Cox’s BBC standard response:  ‘Based on attitudes like that its not surprising that Roma have left their homes in Central Europe and are coy about their true ethnicity.
The problem, of racism, is likely to become more severe…campaign groups claim many 10’s of thousands will flock to the UK.’

Ah…so it’s somehow racist to suggest they come purely for the benefits they can receive…even if it’s true?

The BBC egregiously bring on Labour’s David Blunkett who suggests it’s only ‘political groups’ that oppose immigration…but he reveals that 700 Roma are registered with one doctor’s surgery…cheekily he says we cannot keep accepting such numbers of people as it will undermine society…and who knows what will happen when immigration restrictions are lifted.

No recognition of Labour’s guilt in opening up the borders to allow in a mass influx of immigrants who are now swamping the welfare services.

The numbers already here are vastly underestimated according to a Roma organisation…it estimates that over 200,000 Roma are already in the UK.

But even the Roma themselves admit there may be an even greater influx soon.

‘If anyone thinks there are problems integrating existing communities you ain’t seen nothing yet….you’ve got a huge numbers of Roma and they will come here in huge numbers.
Will the challenges get greater…yes….they are a proper Roma people…it is quite hard to work with them…its going to be interesting.’

Some readers may have read the title to  this post and already have leapt to comment.

However it is used quite deliberately…regardless of whether you think an immigrant coming here solely to pick up the ‘generous benefits’ is committing a fraud…a theft…or not…..the title is used because the BBC are quite happy to use a similar headline on their frontpage…..

It goes on to ask:

So why are the young not taking to the streets?’

So not only is the BBC defaming and slandering a whole generation but incites riots.

Negative stereotyping?  If it’s unacceptable to do so to immigrants why is it OK for the BBC to launch an attack on a particular age group?

Must just be a coincidence that the latest series of Mrs Brown’s Boys had a theme of gay marriage…and the final episode, with a stern lecture to the priesthood on ‘love’,  was broadcast the night before a Commons vote on the subject.

I imagine someone thinks every little bit of pressure helps the Cause however unlikely.

Having said that..not so unlikely….most people would listen to the rib tickling ‘Mrs Brown’ than the no doubt earnest and well meaning but too in your face, so to speak, Peter Tatchell and his ilk…Ben Summerskill.

Cunning people at the BBC.

Hodge The Dodge

Dodging questions of course not taxes.

Just adding a little to David’s earlier piece on Margaret Hodge…the more you look the less savoury the view…..one QC saying that Hodge’s and her fellow MP’s  comments on the tax affairs of the likes of Amazon, Google and Starbucks is an ‘unprincipled attack on the rule of law’.

Hodge is very protective of her reputation….no problem there for her…the BBC at least won’t be doing any digging and asking any awkward questions.

Fortunately others aren’t so scared of her lawyers or her bluster….or  more likely won’t be sitting back and enjoying the spectacle of Hodge attacking ‘Big Business’.

So much for transparency and an open democracy….or the rule of Law which seems to have been replaced by self appointed fingerwaggers who think their opinions should outweigh legal opinion.

She tells us‘I am not a hypocrite’ and her work will not be undermined by ‘politicaly motivated smears‘.

Have a look at what Channel 4 reports on her reaction to allegations of tax avoidance by a company run by her brother:

A roasting for Starbucks..but a grilling for Hodge?

Time and time again I have sought assurances to ensure they do it by the books,” Hodge says.

I have asked him (Ralph her brother who runs the company) more than once.

I’m a tiny, tiny, tiny shareholder.  I’ve done the responsible thing as a shareholder in the company.  He has given me 100 per cent reassurance.”

Stemcor has a turnover of something in the order of £6 billion, and has its headquarters in the UK….but ‘In the past 3 years, a total of £14m of corporation tax has been paid by Stemcor in the UK.‘  Though it says it is paying a rate of over 30% worldwide in total.

OK…a tiny tiny shareholder?  She holds millions of shares…according to Guido £1.8 million worth….and that this figure “excludes shares held in trust or in her children’s names”….’As Polly Toynbee helpfully explains, this can be used as a clever way of minimising future inheritance tax liability’

Forget Bermuda, Britain’s tax havens are much closer to home

‘It’s easy to point a finger at Amazon and co, but UK-based trusts make it easier than ever for the rich not to pay their share….to avoid “uninvited guests at the sharing out of your estate”. Those “uninvited guests” are the rest of the nation’s taxpayers.

Why any Labour chancellor – or Tory for that matter – lets this dodge persist is a mystery.’

You would think someone, possibly a news organisation that seeks to ‘hold Power to account’  would be asking searching questions of those who claim to hold the rest of us to such high standards as Hodge does.

Only this morning on Today John Humphrys was asking ‘Who guards the Guardians’ (2 hrs 10 mins)..in reference to the police….but just as relevant to anyone in positions of power and influence who seek to lay charges at other’s doors and then issue blame and possible retribution…if only to shame and villify them in public….’It is vital that there is an effective  way of  calling to account those who wield enormous power  if they get things badly wrong or abuse that power.’

And what of Hodge’s claim that ‘Time and time again I have sought assurances…‘……that her brother has reassured her that all is above board and no tax minimising schemes are in place at Stemcor?

Stemcor practises ‘Transfer pricing’….something that Hodge and Co have attacked severely as tax avoidance…but Stemcor, in its own case say……

‘ “Transfer pricing” is not synonymous with “tax avoidance”, Stemcor has nothing to hide and would be happy to provide more detail about its tax affairs to the media if requested. Stemcor’s annual reports for the past five years are available to anyone who requests them via www.stemcor.com.’

 That’s OK then.

Fascinating that all it takes is for her brother just to whisper some words of reassurance to her….just a shame Amazon or Starbucks has not employed any of her relatives a cynical comic might suggest.

Is that all she has done to confirm that everything is above reproach?  Seek reassurance. It wasn’t such a good way of dealing with things when she was leader of Islington Council was it?

Some people believe Hodge is engaged in a pantomime of political grandstanding of the highest order…one that is aided and abetted by the BBC’s provision of an unquestioning platform from which to broadcast her heady, populist rhetoric….

‘As Tax Journal reported yesterday, David Goldberg QC has described MPs’ recent criticism of multinationals as an ‘unprincipled attack on the rule of law’. The PAC had set up its own standard for HMRC and criticised the department for not achieving that standard, he argued in a letter to The Times. ‘But the standard set up has no basis in fact or in law,’ he wrote, and Hodge had adopted ‘far too broad a conception of tax avoidance’.

However, Hodge’s work has drawn a good deal of popular support, and a leading article in The Times last weekend said Hodge and the PAC ‘deserve plaudits for so influencing the popular mood’.’

Hodge is a Labour MP…member of a Party that was in power for 13 years, a Party that fawned over the Financial markets and businesses as long as they bankrolled their socialist dreams.

Now that dream has gone bust they are looking for someone to blame..and it’s not themselves…..Labour tiptoed round the edge of the tax avoidance industry, chased off by City blusterers who called tougher tax collection a Labour stealth tax.

As a caller to the Today programme said:

‘If Margaret Hodge doesn’t like the way accountants use the law to save clients tax, then change the law.  That’s what’s she’s paid for.’

Exactly…who makes tax laws?  The politicians.  Margaret Hodge MP is a politician.

What exactly is your record in introducing legislation that tackles the problem of tax avoidance schemes?

Hodge was Labour’s ‘Minister for Industry and the Regions’  2006-2007….surely she had some thing to say at the time about corporate tax then?

‘Imagine that you are the corporate finance director of one of these companies. Your job is to look at the law as it stands….It is not to say, “this looks pretty bad, we had better write a huge cheque to the government ex-gratia and show that we are good citizens”.’  So says Boris Johnson

The BBC’s Andrew Marr has other ideas:

Marr asked: ‘Offering up a bit of money for a headline, how would you regard that – intolerable or unacceptable?’

So tax minimising….the choice is….bad or badder….guess the BBC know what to think.

And let’s look back in anger ourselves at one of Hodges Dodges…..her refusal to take responsibilty…her attempts to smear a man (in a private letter to the BBC…an attempt to manipulate their coverage?) who had genuine claims that he was abused in an Islington care home…her attempts to silence all criticism:

‘All right-thinking people like to imagine, when hearing stories of the maltreatment of children, that they themselves would guarantee sanctuary. But often they simply don’t. A senior social worker, Liz Davies, and her manager, David Cofie, first told Margaret Hodge, then leader of Islington council, in 1990 of their suspicions that there was widespread sexual abuse of children in Islington care homes.

Ms Hodge instead believed senior officials who assured her that nothing was the matter. In 1992, the London Evening Standard published extensive evidence of the abuse, which Ms Hodge denounced as “a sensationalist piece of gutter journalism”. In 1995, an independent report found that the council had indeed failed to investigate the allegations properly.

In 2003, Tony Blair appointed Ms Hodge the first ever Minister for Children. Some questioned her suitability, including a courageous and articulate man called Demetrious Panton who had been sexually abused in an Islington care home in the late 1970s and whose attempts to expose what was happening had been repeatedly ignored.

Ms Hodge wrote privately to the BBC describing Mr Panton as “extremely disturbed”, a remark for which she was later compelled to apologise in the High Court.’

Not a woman who takes criticism lightly or accepts blame readily.

No doubt the way life is, some people are due for a fall from grace…and then perhaps the BBC will do its job and start asking interesting questions.

Make Me Islamic…But Cut Off The Bits That Aren’t!

20344-615.jpg

Warning..some graphic photos

Heart warming tale from the BBC about converts to Islam…part of a series in which we will also see Muslims convert to Christianity…..as well as converts to Buddism, those becoming Hindus and Sikhs, and Jews ‘fleeing’ Judaism as they can no longer stand the Zionist oppression of Palestinians.

I might have made some of that up.

However the BBC programme on Muslim converts is very real:

Growing numbers of young British women are converting to Islam. Shanna Bukhari, a 26-year-old Muslim from Manchester, sets out to find out why girls are giving up partying, drinking and wearing whatever they want for a religion some people associate with the oppression of women.

This warm documentary follows the highs and lows of five girls as they embrace their new faith. From adapting to a religion that allows a man to marry up to four wives to the acceptance of friends and family, it isn’t always easy.

In the normal course of events this might be a legitimate programme..but you know that in this case it is the BBC preaching to and indoctrinating us.

The BBC believes Muslims get a bad Press and that therefore it is the BBC’s job to show us just how wonderful Islam and Muslims are.

Hard luck on the Jews that it is the BBC who gives them (sorry…the ‘Zionists) the bad Press….hardly likely therefore that the BBC will similarly attempt to correct any ill-founded impressions.

Such attempts at social engineering on behalf of Muslms are curious…as it is Muslim actions that have themselves brought to everyones attention the extremes inherent in Islam the Religion.

The BBC’s refusal to examine the Koran and Islam the Religion as Mark Thompson told us….because they are afraid to do so….should be setting off a few alarm bells…instead the BBC turns a blind eye and prostrates itself before that most violent of all religions.

The BBC’s claim of ‘independence’ hardly rings true when you realise that the Corporation will adjust its programming to suit you if you put enough ‘pressure’ upon it.

Quick Off The Mark When It Wants To Be.

The BBC only reported the antics of the racists of the ‘Muslim Patrol’ when forced to by ever increasing revelations and coverage by other news organisations.

The BBC has learnt its lesson and now rapidly publishes all such incidents of religiously inspired hate:

Family quits Bingham after anti-Muslim attacks

‘A Muslim family say they have been forced to move from their home after offensive graffiti and a cross wrapped in ham were left outside their house.

Murad Alam, 39, said his wife and two sons, aged eight and 10, had moved out of their home in Bingham, Nottinghamshire, to a “safe” place.

BBC: Blatant Liars On Behalf Of The Labour Party

In a blatant day of pro-Labour political spin the BBC have been giving massive publicity to a report by what is almost, in essence, a Labour Party front  organisation, The Resolution Foundation,  which claims millions of the poorest will have whatever is left of their meagre income further shrunken by councils ‘forced’ to make cuts in council tax benefits to the poorest because of heartless Government cuts….

or as the Resolution Foundation puts it:

‘Low-income families will see their council tax bills rise by up to £600 a year from April.

As a result of council tax benefit reform, No Clear Benefit shows that three-quarters of local authorities are set to demand increased payments from the 3.2 million poorest working-age households who currently pay either no council tax or a reduced charge. Families are facing a hike of more than 330 per cent in the most severe cases.’

The Resolution Foundation are happy to join up with the IPPR ‘think tank’….Labour’s own propaganda unit….Beyond the Bottom Line, a joint report from the Resolution Foundation and IPPR.

Richard D in the comments draws this to our attention….a letter from the Tory Party condemning the BBC’s coverage of an issue to which even the BBC admits has a “highly charged, political context”.

The letter  from Grant Shapp’s aide Jack Berry states:

‘This morning BBC news outlets gave heavy prominence to a report on council tax benefit from the Resolution Foundation.

The report was highly critical of Government policy concerning changes to council tax benefit. In turn, it provided an easy hook for the Labour Party to voice its opposition. I am writing to register concerns about the corporation’s editorial integrity over this story.

Viewers, listeners and readers might therefore expect that the report was wholly independent of party political interests. However, this is clearly not the case.’

He’s not wrong.

If you had been listening to the BBC today you might have come away with the idea that £600 was the default figure to be imposed.

Here the BBC explains it on the web with at least a stab at the truth:

Millions of the poorest households face council tax rises because most councils in England will pass on a 10% benefit funding cut, research suggests.

A typical bill will rise from April by between £100 and £250 a year, but some could rise as much as £600, the Resolution Foundation think tank says.

But who are the Resolution Foundation?

The BBC says:  ‘The Resolution Foundation, is a not-for-profit research and policy organisation which says its goal is to improve outcomes for people on low and modest incomes.’

Listening on the radio I heard them described by the BBC as ‘an independent think tank’ and as an independent research group’.

Which of course immediately caught my interest….

Guido beat me to the punch in revealing that the BBC  has blatantly lied about the Resolution Foundation.

The report’s author was one Matthew Pennycook….a Labour Councillor for Greenwich West and an ex advisor to a Labour MP, Karen Buck.

He is also, surprise, surprise, a Guardian columnist…here is a taste of his obviously pro-Labour thought.

He also served time with the ‘Fair Pay Network’…of which Labour’s Peter Kenyon enthused about:

‘We agreed that as the Labour Party we need to be pushing this as a campaigning issue of direct relevance to the majority of people we seek to represent. A twin-track campaign with the Fair Pay Network highlighting greed and inequality would do wonders for Labour Party morale. It might even improve Labour’s electoral standing.’

The BBC seems to have a similar idea launching its own ‘twin track campaign’ against ‘The Cuts’ with Labour…..it might even improve Labour’s electoral chances!

The Fair Pay Network…chaired by Karen Buck…Pennycook’s old boss…oh and look John Cruddas, and Polly Toynbee, Baronness Kennedy…and Guy Stallard – Director – KPMG Europe….just of interest because of course KPMG seem involved in a lot of these initiatives and were used by the BBC as an example of a company endorsing a ‘living wage’ when Miliband was trumpeting his latest brainwave…and are the BBC’s own accountants.

Not sure what the BBC’s idea of ‘independent’ is but here’s some help for them:

BBC in A Leftwing Old Pickle

The BBC was today accused of working with Labour to maximise ‘political damage’ of spending cuts in an escalation of tensions with the government.

‘Gullible’ BBC acting as backing band to Labour’s attacks on spending cuts, claims Eric Pickles in fresh attack on TV news

  • Communities Secretary steps up criticism of the BBC reporting
  • Claims Labour is behaving like a 1980s tribute act with local BBC acting as a backing band

Just hope the tribute band in question isn’t ‘Spandeau Ballet’:

A BBC radio announcer has apologised after accidentally saying that Nazi architect Albert Speer spent 20 years in the 1980’s new romantic band Spandau Ballet, instead of Spandau Prison.
