See the BBC like to start the new year with THIS nasty little attack piece on Queen Victoria. After paragraph after paragraph of a hatchet job, it concludes on an upbeat tone “Perhaps Queen Victoria was not such a bad mother after all.” How generous.

It’s interesting to compare how the BBC and Sky cover the same story. Take the visit by Prince Harry to Salford today, for example. As I was driving home from work this evening, I had the great misfortune to hear how BBC Radio 4’s PM programme covered it. The angle chosen was whether local people were happy to see him there-  or not. Two people interviewed, one for the visit, one against it. So, the impression given was that a substantial number of people from Salford resented the presence of Prince Harry. I then happened to catch Sky News covering the same subject only they chose to stick to the facts of the visit without the need to Royal bash. It was a radical difference in approach.

Interesting to see how the BBC treats the engagement of Prince William and Kate Middleton. In the prime time slot just after the 8am news on Today, the BBC invited Lady Antonio Fraser and Stephen Haseler on to discuss the event. Haseler sneered at the event in venomous republican style, thus speaking on behalf of the Corporation. Previous reports this morning zeroed in on the likely cost of the wedding in the age of austerity. Tell you what, how about the BBC donates the cost of the wedding of our future King and Queen from it’s lavish £3billion per annum license tax? In this age of austerity….
