JENNI MURRAY – VICTIM OF THE VRWC

Woman’s Hour presenter Jenni Murray was on Radio 4’s Feedback today (approx 7 mins in) defending herself against feminist anger over a recent stand-up routine she did as part of Comic Relief. It seems Murray used the word “bitches” and had committed the unforgivable crime (in feminist circles) of calling herself a “girl”. She pointed out that she was trying to be funny (the use of “bitches”, for example, was part of a mock urban slang bit of the sort heard with tiresome regularity from “real” Radio 4 comedians such as Mark Steel, her mentor for the Comic Relief exercise).

Before explaining the “ironic” nature of her comedy routine, Murray treated us to a brief history of the phrase “political correctness”. Referring to herself in the third person, she reminded right-on listeners everywhere about the real enemy:

“Who would’ve thought that Jenni Murray, queen of all things politically correct, would’ve landed herself in trouble accused of using unacceptable language? Well let’s deal first of all with those words “politically correct”, the ubiquitous “PC”. I never use them. It was an expression promoted by advisers to George Bush Sr during his presidency and was a plot by the extreme right wing in America to put down people like me.”

A pillar of the BBC possessing a deranged antipathy towards an imagined “extreme right wing in America”. Who’d have guessed, eh?

TRANSPHOBIA

No, I don’t listen to Woman’s Hour (or Wimmin’s Hour to be more accurate) but it happened to be on when I was in the car earlier and before I could turn it off I caught a conversation concerning how “patronising” the use of the word “lady” is when referring to a member of the contradictory gender. There was some arch-feminist on – let’s call her Millie Tant – who was suggesting that she was in no way ladylike. I am sure she is right. However the bit that really caught my attention was when she attacked David Walliams and Matt Lucas for their “I’m a lady” sketch on Litte Britain. This, she insisted, was transphobic. I think even the presenter was taken back by that one. What a pointless programme.

WOMAN’S HOUR

I’m guessing that “Woman’s Hour” may not feature on every B-BBC readers daily repertoire of essential listening! That said, I happened to tune into it the other day and was regaled by Jenni Murray making the statement “Suppose you are walking along worrying about carbon emissions and you go to buy a punnet of blackberries”... Yeah, right. Then I heard a trailer for the show today which will feature Margaret Beckett whose career has been long and illustrious”. Really? I seem to have missed the illustrious element but I guess there is no bias in the BBC assertion. Whilst there are overt politically biased programmes like Today, the issue is that the sheer volume of BBC output provides a veritable constellation of bias all over the broadcasting spectrum, and Woman’s Hour is just one example. By the way, why is there not a “Men’s Hour”?
