"I rarely fly, for environmental reasons"

Hat tip to Bupendra Bhakta in the comments for this gem.

My Life in Travel: Marcus Brigstocke, comedian

Best holiday?
I went to the Maldives the year before last… I’ve also had some of my happiest holidays in Mallorca with family and friends. It’s a very beautiful island. We stay in great place called Camp de Mar near Andratx. So it’s a toss-up between the opulent, unforgettable paradise of the Maldives and calamari by the beach, waterskiing and nightclubbing in Mallorca

What have you learnt from your travels?
I have learnt that I am incapable of packing the right amount of clothing, probably because I start 10 minutes before I’m supposed to leave; and that I truly hate airports. I rarely fly, for environmental reasons more than anything else.

Where has seduced you?
I went to China for a brief working visit and I thought that Shanghai was interesting, but Beijing totally grabbed me

Worst travel experience?
My son, sister, niece and I were sea kayaking in Mexico and got caught in a rip tide

Worst hotel?
A resort hotel in Varadero, Cuba.

Dream trip?
I have never been to India.

Favourite city?
New York. It has great restaurants and is a part of the US that you can enjoy as a liberal Brit.

Marcus Brigstocke will be performing at Altitude at Volvo Snowbombing from 4-9 April in Mayrhofen, Austria

The smug snobbish hypocrisy of that statement makes my skin crawl.

          Gotta luv that ‘rarely’.

Weasel-speak for, ‘I perform at every event sponsored by car manufacturers that I get asked to as it pays bloody well.  Unfortunately I don’t get asked to very many of them’.

Old Granny Bhakta used to call that. ‘making a virtue out of a necessity’.

On the plus side, this is probably as close as we’re ever going to get to a Beeboid admitting they are, in fact, a liberal.

Doubtless the usual suspects will be along in a minute to tell us he meant ‘liberal’ in the sense of ‘liking cheese’ or ‘being scared of fish’, just like the call for more ‘left of centre’ thinking actually turned out to be a demand for more programs about llamas.

This is Brigstocke racking up more air miles in his hilariously ironic mission to save the planet?  This jaw achingly, self-righteous, self-serving twat says he cares for the planet, but flies far more than most people will ever do in a lifetime!

The route of environmentalism is the one favoured by “comedians” who eventually wake up out of their trance and realize there is no f***ing way people will part with hard-earned cash to watch gobshites spouting politically correct dross.

Face it Brigstocke, you patently unfunny fool, the only reason the BBC employ people like you is because they’re subconsciously dedicated to the idea of failure!

Pump out that harmless plant food eh Marcus? After all its good for the planet. Theres hypocrisy and then theres beeboid hypocrisy. If the proles use less it simply translates in Brigstockes tiny mind that he can use more because he is a legend in his own lunchtime and deserves the very finest things in life which the rest of us would be unable to appreciate as much as he does.

  19. London Calling says:

With Brigstocke you have to bear in mind he is a mass of inner contradictions. By his own admission he had a middle class upbringing, public school education in West Sussex and Somerset, and in his teens he was grossly obese. He had more than a passing acquaintance with drugs and I rather think he had non-NHS treatment, though I’ve never seen it admitted.

All this liberal lefty stuff is a form of self-loathing of his origins. When he starts spouting eco-boll*x and right-on stuff it’s a delusional attempt to disown who he is. He is comical, though not in the way he thinks he is.

Its why the BBC love him. Most of them are out of the same box.

We should exile him to Taransay where he could commune with nature and recycle his poo. If we leave him there for about 30 years his footprint will revert to the national average.

    • Umbongo says:

Actually I’ve become quite a fan of that Lenny Henry disaster.  As I commented a couple of weeks ago, even the studio audience (usually – in this kind of effort – guaranteed to erupt into hysteria at the merest glimmer of a joke) is mostly stunned into silence by the complete absence of humour.  It’s like listening to a shipwreck: the vessel is going down with all hands except that a generous dollop of taxpayers’ money will find its way to Cap’n Henry’s bank account and the BBC can be relied on to launch another lifeboat to save Henry’s career in “comedy”.

      • Cassandra King says:

For the BBC it does not matter if Henry is funny, he is the right colour and he has done and said nothing to upset the BBC commissars.

BTW Henry has not ben funny for twenty years and in fact as soon as the multiculti thin lips got hold of him he became as funny as Brigstocke. Choosing a comedian not for his talent but for his political reliability and skin colour does anyone else not find that a little creepily racist?

FFS where will this nonsense end. (As for the music – a few good songs, but mostly garbage. We used to be pioneers in music. La di da di da…)

Coincidentally, Bishop Hill has a thread today http://bishophill.squarespace.com/blog/2011/2/15/real-sceptics.html on the hypocrisy of Gore and friends about carbon offset payments (which I’m sure Marcus religiously pays).  Gore, effectively, pays himself every time he “pays” a carbon offset for his private jet tours of the world.  In any event, as commenter Richard Verney at Feb 15, 2011 at 1:48 PM on the Bishop Hill thread points out, carbon offset payments involve “merely purchas[ing] a certificate which means nothing at all since no one is actually making any physical reduction [my emphasis].   The bankruptcy of the Chicago Carbon Exchange together with the continuing frauds at the its European equivalent are both a comment on and a metaphor for the whole AGW structure.

However, I could forgive Marcus for being an idiot concerning AGW and the rest of the junk he believes in, were he in the least bit funny.  Unfortunately laughing at (or even with) Marcus is the equivalent of laughing at somebody with learning difficulties: genuinely offensive to those with any taste or, indeed, any sense of humour.  In a rational world Marcus would be ignored, and would be even in this one if only the BBC would stop pushing his “comedy” and earnest (but oh so fashionable) ignorance in our faces.

‘He may use his frequent BBC appearances [to] spout the usual buzz words such as ‘equality’, ‘diversity’, ‘multi-culturalism’ and ‘Islamophobia’ but we can now see what exists behind the carefully moderated public face.’

Now, why does the BBC seem to be such a comfortable home for those who say one thing (in carefully moderated places) but evidently feel and do quite another?

I clicked on that link and then the link where he is debating and he admitted that he loves the Prophet more than his two year old son (not exact words).  I found that completely shocking but when I thought about it I realised I wasn’t surprised.

I wasn’t surprised when I thought how, one incident I remember being shown on the BBC some years ago – some Palestinian fathers were holding their sons in front of them to act as human shields so they could throw things at the Israeli military.  Then of course, the rockets are deliberately fired from schools, houses and anywhere that children are so that when Israel targets the sources of the rockets they kill children and the world condemns Israel for killing them.  They also use children as the front line in attacking Israeli settlers and indoctrinate children into becoming suicide bombers.  No, shocked yes but surprised, no.

That kind of hypocrisy was rampant in the USSR, a rancid ideology that the BBC basks in and thrives on, a corruption of humanity that we have not yet stamped out with the utmost vigour and until we do its spectre will haunt us.
