Funny Old World

Going to be some head scratching at the BBC where they just know that Whites are the most racist, sorry, the only racist people in the world……

Maybe this remark from a Bulgarian can help them out:

You British bring civilisation wherever you go. This is my impression at least,”

A fascinating map of the world’s most and least racially tolerant countries

Here’s what the data show:

• Anglo and Latin countries most tolerant. People in the survey were most likely to embrace a racially diverse neighbor in the United Kingdom and its Anglo former colonies (the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand) and in Latin America. The only real exceptions were oil-rich Venezuela, where income inequality sometimes breaks along racial lines, and the Dominican Republic, perhaps because of its adjacency to troubled Haiti. Scandinavian countries also scored high.

Clearly the data is wrong as Polly’s Dad, Arnold, had his own views:

According to Arnold J. Toynbee: “The extinction of race consciousness as between Muslims is one of the outstanding achievements of Islam and in the contemporary world there is, as it happens, a crying need for the propagation of this Islamic virtue.”

How long before the BBC, and Colditz (under whatever name you care to choose…lots to choose from..at least 30 so far  that you have used!), are trying to explain those figures away…..is it a result of colonialism?…is it any wonder they all hate foreigners!  No colonialism in South America of course.

So far nothing yet…but there is this:

World’s most distinct mammals and amphibians mapped

I await with interest.

Since this survey asked people for their opinions, isn’t it equally likely that the map shows the extent of “political correctness”, where people know what response they are expected to give to such a loaded question?

It’s a big industry, so I have to presume some still take ‘surveys’ seriously.
But the question of GIGO is pretty key.
Given the degree of ‘twinning’ now at senior ed level, I don’t think this can any longer be deemed OT:
      environmentguardian.co.uk
Climate research nearly unanimous on human causes, survey finds
      http://gu.com/p/3fpf5/tw

‘Of more than 4,000 academic papers published over 20 years, 97.1% agreed that climate change is anthropogenic’
Not 97.0 or 97.2, but 97.1% agreed. Of ‘more than 4,000’, or so. Are they also doing the stats for women’s face filler ads too?

Next… ‘Fertility studies nearly certain humans can be a little bit pregnant, research finds’

I love these kind of maps, and this one’s interesting. Some of the results aren’t surprising and some are. It’s worth noting the couple of caveats the author provides as well before treating it as gospel.

Still, not related to the BBC is it? Unless you agree with your premise ‘Whites are the most racist, sorry, the only racist people in the world’, and I don’t know anyone who thinks that.

If the results are accurate, it’s great that we’ve moved so far, and developed countries are for the most part likley to follow. Of course, that means that some people get left behind. Who could I be thinking of Alan?

‘Who could I be thinking of’
And the first out the traps to say… nothing… is… a person asking a question only they know the answer to!
Well worth the period of absence.
‘Still, not related to the BBC is it? ‘
At least the precedent has been re-established by another (or another renamed) self-appointed hall monitor.
Now, as you’re here… hiring placemen of curious professional backgrounds with less than uncertain fealties… simply the best for the job or a slightly narrow circle of friends?
And speaking of Newsnight: just a run of bad luck trying to stitch up persons or entities that the BBC groupthink see as ‘non-u’… but getting caught… or just one of those things a bit of Titanic shuffleboard and some more redirection of the licence fee away from programming can easily sweep away?

Isn’t this the racism of lowered expectations, to use Dave Preiser’s apt expression?

I’d hold of on that triumphalism for a while yet

He is a funny old bloke! Has Arnold J Toynbee ever heard of Darfur?? Ever read about the plight of black people in Libya during the war? Just two excellent examples where he is talking utter rubbish!

As with all surveys and questionnaires there are nuances. In the case of India the people there might feel more able to express exactly how they feel whereas here we have been beaten over the head for so long with the tag of ‘Racist’ that we are more likely to be reserved with our opinions.

Yes it is good that this makes us look the least ‘racist’ but in my view not wanting other races as your neighbours is a perfectly normal standpoint as most humans feel safer amongst their own kind.
