Flanders Labouring The Not So Obvious

George Osborne made his ‘State of the Economy’ speech today telling us that things were looking up and Plan A had given Balls a kick in the Plan B’s.

I heard Flanders explaining it all away today….explaining to us how Balls would react…how did she know?…..preparing the ground for Balls to roll out his own sorry excuses for his own shambolic performance no doubt.

She wrote it all up in an article which Guido has looked at:

New Plan B: Re-write History

A rather kind piece on the BBC website from Stephanie Flanders about how Ed Balls will react to Osborne’s speech. She helpfully lists possible lines for the Shadow Chancellor…. Stephanie is giving him wriggle room. Guido didn’t realise that they were still friends with benefits…

Balls later appeared on ‘World At One’  (13:15) on which he steam rollered Martha Kearney who found it hard to get a word in….what is the point of such an ‘interview’ if no light is shed and it turns into a Labour Party broadcast?

Did laugh when Balls challenged Osborne….

‘If you want to debate the past bring it on….you can’t airbrush out the past and rewrite history’

Well…yes you can…if you have the BBC archives on your side and can erase 13 years of Labour government….remind me…just who was this ‘Gordon Brown’ fellow?

His statement reached even deeper levels of ridiculousness when he told us that the Falkirk scandal (or the not a scandal)  had absolutely nothing to do with Miliband’s decision to change the rules for Union donations.

He then, remember he is the Shadow Chancellor…Labour’s second most important personage,  claimed that he had not seen the internal report into that (not a) scandal and knew nothing about it really, no really.

I guess you don’t need to look for any right wing comedians for the BBC to employ when the left do the job of satirising themselves so well.

Of course, Flanders is inclined to be more critical of
Coalition government economic policy, than that of Labour government of the recent past.

Although it is reasonable for Flanders to point out the obvious: that growth in GDP is not synonymous with betterment for every individual in terms of standard of living, does Flanders apply same criterion to Labour governments?

And Flanders (and Balls) still find it difficult to conceal their preference for higher government deficit spending (more public borrowing)- something we can expect from any future Labour government, with the predictable negative economic consequences. With no economic lessons learnt.

It still disgusts me that bBC still keeps going on about the cuts when net government expenditure keeps rising. Not fast enough, obviously.

That’s all right. After the bloodbath in the Public Accounts Committee today the BBC will be navel gazing until broken up. A pitiful bunch on trial today. It looked like Nuremberg.

maybe Flanders has to report everything that milliband and balls tell her to report because they have some dark secret about Flanders sex life that they will reveal if she doesnt do as she’s told

maybe she likes to dress up as maggie thatcher in bed screaming “the ladies not for turning” whilst she’s taking it from behind. horrible thought i know, but you never know

And the BBC are playing along with the ‘cost of living’ campaign that Labour launched a few weeks back faced with the awful, awful prospect of a recovering economy.

Flanders (people are still less well off than before the crash – she surprises me!), Today, Vicky and the massed ranks of the Beeboids are busy telling us how badly off we are and hitting the streets to find innocent bystanders who will confirm it.

It’s a bit like the ‘beating your wife’ question. Ask anyone in the street how they are managing financially and the chances are that the BBC will get the answer they are looking for*. Those more optimistic will end up on the cutting room floor. Doom, doom, doom

Actually, as an aside, while I write this I’m struck by the generally negative, flat tone of interviewees on any subject for that matter, not just those (if you believe it) selling their clothes to pay for their heating. On football phone-in, the Antiques Roadshow, you name it, the desponds are there.

Perhaps that is one of the results of the social engineering and conditioning that the BBC are trying to achieve. Perhaps they don’t want people being interviewed that are optimistic, aspirational, determined to set the pace, or overcome everything, even if they have had a bad deal.

Are the BBC painting a picture of a narrow aspect of dour British life and presenting it at the norm? I think so.

It is nonsense. Living standards have plummeted to….where they were 4 or 5 years ago

No need for food banks etc then….why now?

It might be a similar situation to what’s going on in the US. Millions of long-term unemployed or underemployed have gone through whatever savings they may have had, and whatever corners they’ve been cutting are no longer enough as food and fuel and rents and other prices continue to rise and rise. Just a basic annual rent increase alone can be a the final blow after a while.

Some people could hold out for a year or two, but we’re seeing people out of work, or unable to earn enough to stay afloat, for three years and more. It’s breaking them, and more people are turning up, or setting up on the street selling their belongings.

There may also be an element of de-stigmatization, leading more people to seek help without feeling ashamed than would have otherwise. As the saying goes, turn them all into beggars, because they’re easier to please.
