Lord Hall of the BBC stated that he refused to allow the salaries of his stars to be divulged in case they were ‘poached’ by competitors. Their salaries were supposedly so low.

The only poaching that Lineacher will get will be twenty minutes in simmering stock. Although he is so thick he may need an additional 5 or 10 minutes to cook through.
It’s all about supply and demand. You would think Huw Edwards would have been snapped up by now, a bargain at half a million to read an autocue. There are only about sixty million people in the country who can not only read but also talk, and we all know how every company is desperate for people to read news.
Just remember how Jonathan Ross (who he?) was snapped up as soon as the BBC let him go.
I don’t agree with the massive salaries some of these people are paid, but I do think Jonathan Ross is talented. Yes, the incident with Russell Brand was despicable but I used to listen to him on the radio on Saturday mornings (IIRC) and he had an amazing ability to sustain flights of imagination. The recent quiz show about what the country thinks was lifted from the mundane by him and Frank Skinner. Similarly Jeremy Clarkson is a rare talent. The “interviewers” and newsreaders who simply parrot the Guardian line are indeed hugely overpaid, but genuine talent deserves a special reward.
You’re certainly entitled to your opinion but I think our definitions of talent are very different indeed.

I also had respect for newsreaders who could speak clearly, didn’t promote their own personalities, and took the trouble to pronounce foreign words and names correctly, and interviewers who could think on their feet, phrase questions correctly and keep their own views to themselves. No current first rate examples that I can think of.
Sorry, but IMO all the people you mention could be lost or replaced without difficulty and to me, Ross is a complete nonentity. To me, playing records on the radio is not a career, or even a good start. It’s a dumbed down, 20th century non-job.

Lordy – you’re living in the wrong century.
From your choices, you obviously seek talent in a very traditional way but I’ve noticed that, by and large, younger people in particular don’t really care. The days when talent gained respect, even amongst people who had no interest whatsoever in the respective art or genre, seem to be over. All that matters is now is fame, relevance (whatever that means), peer pressure, and whether the person is, sort of, like, cool. A person can be an obnoxious, talentless waste of space but so long as the above criteria are satisfied, that’s all that matters. The fact that the individual will be gone in a year or two doesn’t seem to matter either.
Years of training and experience count for virtually nothing. Can’t sing? Just use AutoTune. People will still pay £200 to listen to you and talk about it as a life changing experience for about two days. Their choice I suppose.
I agree with Lordy, BUT I can see where Clare is coming from (though I think being told ‘living in the wrong century’ is a harsh analogy)
The humour of ‘younger people ‘ to us of another era, is infantile and puerile. I happened to inadvertently switch to a programme called ‘Live at the Apollo’, and someone called Jason Manford was striding up and down the stage and appearing to have the audience in hysterics. I sat there barely raising a smile, and wondering if this now passes for ‘talent’.

I agree with Clare – I do feel out of step with so many things. I don’t think they will come as a surprise to many people here:
– Lack of respect for genuine talent, regardless of whether one actually enjoys the product or not (as above). I have no interest in ballet or dance generally, but I respect the talent and the dedication. I’m prepared to accept that the lack of interest might be my loss.
– Lack of objective standards in many things, but art and entertainment in particular. For instance I think Tracey Emin is a talentless fraud – no discernible skill whatsoever, and nothing to say.
– Absolute loathing of what the BBC and much of the MSM have become.
There are many others, but I’m not going to ramble on.
So pleased you included Barry Cryer, the most under-rated comedy writer, and a prime candidate in my book for a Knighthood.
I had the pleasure of meeting Barry Cryer a few years ago and he was incredibly funny in his ordinary conversation, friendly and not a bit stuck up. He didn’t behave like a ‘celeb’, more like that funny chap you meet down the pub sometimes that keeps the whole bar in stitches.
To call Tracey Emin a fraud is a bit unfair, I think. A fraud is someone who is pretending to have talent, but knows he does not have it. Ms Emin seems to me to genuinely believe she has talent because enough gallery owners and art critics have told her so. She is the end product of an artistic culture which sees no difference between the works of Michaelangelo, and an unmade bed by someone from Margate.
Probably as low as Flabbot would pay a policeman!

I have recently read with interest a few recent articles in the Times about the EU referendum, both for and against , but the readers comments are the best, highly entertaining. Remainers react really badly to being called snobs, so badly that it must be hitting the mark. Given that most Remainers are on the liberal left, apart from a few fat cats, calling them snobs immediately puts them on the defensive and they start trying to justify why they aren’t at all snobbish. This just digs their hole deeper. Great fun and I recommend it whenever you have to speak with one of them.
Doublethinker, I think as time goes by and the doom-laden predictions of leaving the EU do not seem to materialise, fewer and fewer people are ideologically committed to Remain. At the time of the Referendum a lot of people I know voted Remain mainly on the ‘devil you know’ principle, but now they are seeing that the dire predictions are not happening and in fact, the EU seems to be behaving rather shabbily with its grubby demands for money. So the main Remainers are now the Remoaners, who are essentially puritans wedded to the stalinistic dream of EU domination, and thus humourless and easy to wind up.
For those that missed Munroe Bergdorf on with piers this morning who was taking none of his racist rubbish. And i see VD had him on later as well. An out and out racist and they give him airtime.

I had the misfortune to catch some of the last Any Questions on the radio. Cue a self righteous question along the lines of why are WE more interested in the floods in Texas than in India?! The clear implication being that we are white racists.
I get tired of this. The media does not reflect MY interests. I do not share the BBC’s morbid obsession with the US in general and Trump in particular as it endlessly and tediously campaigns against any and all US Republican presidents. It’s the BBC and it’s fellow travellers which chooses to major on Trump, while ignoring South America, China, Japan and India etc. Not me! Now that they realise they can’t attack Trump over Texas, the BBC loses interest in that.

The other bit of BBC bias I came across was on Barmier and his views on Brexit. The BBC piece led with one statement by the nutter, then followed it up with another statement from Bampot, and only in third place a statement from Davis. I also noticed later on that while the EU would be quoted as simply stating something as if it was a fact, that the UK would make a ‘claim’ as if the UK statement was contentious.

The BBC played the same word games last year during the referendum. The Remain side “stated” while the Leave side “claimed”. I used it to prove to people that the BBC wasn’t neutral and that nothing it reported could be taken on trust. Once they’d listened to some news bulletins and agreed that the bias was proven I could then give some examples of the lies they were telling, and another convert was won over from the Dark Side.
Yesterday Mark Mardell (and Lord knows how many others) winged their way out to Lake Como to hear Barnier as the wines flowed, the canapes were served and the gorgeous palaces played host with Italian extravagance.

I noticed something similar the other day. Remoaners were characterised as being “broadly positive about immigration” whereas Brexiteers were described as “hostile towards immigration”.
“Hostile” sounds a bit nasty, doesn’t it? The word “negative” or “sceptical” would have been better.

As a generally atheist, not secular, news machine the BBC ignores the dimension of Merkel’s faith in her motivation, as the BBC doesn’t believe any of that stuff is real or matters. Religion only seems to crop up in Beebworld if it is a. Islam or b. Christianity if it somehow shows an inversion of what the BBC thinks is ‘traditional’ Christianity. The BBC is reporting today that the Police need more money, are overworked and increasingly suffering from mental ill health.
Yet just the other week they were cheerleading the expansion of hate/thought crime legislation. How stressful must that be for them? Rather than focus on spiralling gang violence and terrorism (just three major attacks this year) they now have to police people’s feelings. If I had been a PC listening to the Today programme interview ‘victims of hate crime’ I probably would have dropped dead with a brain aneurysm.
The state should not concern itself with people’s thoughts – hatred is an emotion and thus exists purely in the mind.
Perhaps one could justify an objective test: would a reasonable person have been offended by the words? Judges could construe it strictly and set the bar very high, which would both prevent the floodgates from opening with a deluge of cases and send a message that it it both reasonable and prudent to have a thick skin. Perhaps repeated use of the ‘n’ word would pass the test but mere disagreement or general abuse would not.
The problem is that the test is subjective: whatever the claimant perceives to have been offensive is actionable. It is a preposterously low threshold which is open to abuse. How many jilted lovers or disgruntled former employees will try to get people in trouble on spurious grounds?
How many exchanges are there online every day? How much time and money will this cost the Police force? Ultimately could it cost lives when we know how extreme the threat of terrorism is?
Of course this is effectively a Sharia blasphemy law masquerading as a noble quest to end ‘hatred.’ In these glorious diverse days, we are only a word or cartoon away from mass rioting. So anyone who dares criticise a certain ideology too openly or to the wrong person will feel a boot stamping on their face, and this will clearly be a situation we are stuck with forever.

It begins by linking the Mughal Empire (Muslim warlords that conquered and subjugated India), to some very nice buildings in India.
It then expresses its absolute horror that one state in India should diminish its teaching of the Islamist Warlords in favour of Hindu related history relevant to the state. A BBC reporter interviews someone who says that due to limitation in book size, one school textbook has had to reduce its content on the Mughal Empire.
The BBC then says that right – wing Hindu Nationalists are on the rise and are making claims that the Mughal Empire was not very nice. The BBC then say that many Mughal Emperors were very nice Muslim people and maintained peace in India.

I am reading it second time around and it is probably the best book ever written that exposes the extent of political /EU indecisiveness and arrogance along with the contempt the elite left have for anyone else.
I particularly like his use of quotes comments and statistics that even the BBC fact checker couldn’t get wrong. However it also depresses me reading it and makes me wonder why there hasn’t been an uprising yet. We should look to the V4. Above all this is not a book on racism or xenophobia as the Guardian reported – it is an honest, rational and well researched piece of work that deserves to be promoted more.

Well I have been through the visa process when my wife applied for a UK visa. The law at that time was that the applicant had to be the individual who wanted to travel. The document is stamped into the applicant’s passport. Maybe the law has changed or some people are above the law .
Entry denied. Let us hope so.

Do they not realise that the Third Reich ended over seventy years ago? The modern threat is different but could well end up feeling quite similar: totalitarian; no minority rights; gays and others persecuted. Bizarrely they do everything in their power to support that ideology. We can all see how well appeasement is working. Just show them enough love and they will love us back, right?

A most peculiar story.
I have to say I don’t have much sympathy with a group that calls itself a “National Socialist youth organisation”. If the BBC story is to be taken at face value, they seem a thoroughly unpleasant lot. It’s the fact that they appear to have been arrested for “thought crime” that worries me. A bit like Minority Report without the PreCogs.
After years of complaining here that the BBC won’t use the word terrorism when it clearly applies, the authorities now look like they are using the word when it doesn’t. The the commission, preparation and instigation of acts of terrorism appears to cover merely being a member of a group the Government has decided might be a danger to others. Yet we could all, I’m sure, think of other groups that surely represent a far greater danger who are positively fawned over by the authorities and the BBC.
