Lord Hall of the BBC stated that he refused to allow the salaries of his stars to be divulged in case they were ‘poached’ by competitors. Their salaries were supposedly so low.

Well, have any been ‘poached’ so far?

    Any?

How about Gary ‘anti-Brexit but sells crisps’ Linekar?

How about Graham ‘if Brexit wins I’ll go back to Ireland’ Norton?

How low would their salaries have to fall before they were ‘poached’? A tenner??

It’s all about supply and demand. You would think Huw Edwards would have been snapped up by now, a bargain at half a million to read an autocue. There are only about sixty million people in the country who can not only read but also talk, and we all know how every company is desperate for people to read news.

Just remember how Jonathan Ross (who he?) was snapped up as soon as the BBC let him go.

I don’t agree with the massive salaries some of these people are paid, but I do think Jonathan Ross is talented. Yes, the incident with Russell Brand was despicable but I used to listen to him on the radio on Saturday mornings (IIRC) and he had an amazing ability to sustain flights of imagination. The recent quiz show about what the country thinks was lifted from the mundane by him and Frank Skinner. Similarly Jeremy Clarkson is a rare talent. The “interviewers” and newsreaders who simply parrot the Guardian line are indeed hugely overpaid, but genuine talent deserves a special reward.

        • Lord Wreath says:

You’re certainly entitled to your opinion but I think our definitions of talent are very different indeed.

To me, these people are or were talented (not exhaustive):

          Yehudi Menuhin
          Vladimir Ashkenazy
          Neville Marriner
          Placido Domingo
          The Two Ronnies
Michael McIntyre (on a good day)
          Ken Dodd (live shows only)
          Mike Yarwood
          Harry Enfield
          George Cole
          Peter O’Toole
Ben Elton (as a comedy writer only)
          John Cleese (at his best)
          Eric Sykes
          Barry Cryer (as a writer)

          etc

I also had respect for newsreaders who could speak clearly, didn’t promote their own personalities, and took the trouble to pronounce foreign words and names correctly, and interviewers who could think on their feet, phrase questions correctly and keep their own views to themselves. No current first rate examples that I can think of.

Sorry, but IMO all the people you mention could be lost or replaced without difficulty and to me, Ross is a complete nonentity. To me, playing records on the radio is not a career, or even a good start. It’s a dumbed down, 20th century non-job.

          Rant over.

Lordy – you’re living in the wrong century.

From your choices, you obviously seek talent in a very traditional way but I’ve noticed that, by and large, younger people in particular don’t really care. The days when talent gained respect, even amongst people who had no interest whatsoever in the respective art or genre, seem to be over. All that matters is now is fame, relevance (whatever that means), peer pressure, and whether the person is, sort of, like, cool. A person can be an obnoxious, talentless waste of space but so long as the above criteria are satisfied, that’s all that matters. The fact that the individual will be gone in a year or two doesn’t seem to matter either.

Years of training and experience count for virtually nothing. Can’t sing? Just use AutoTune. People will still pay £200 to listen to you and talk about it as a life changing experience for about two days. Their choice I suppose.

I agree with Lordy, BUT I can see where Clare is coming from (though I think being told ‘living in the wrong century’ is a harsh analogy)

The humour of ‘younger people ‘ to us of another era, is infantile and puerile. I happened to inadvertently switch to a programme called ‘Live at the Apollo’, and someone called Jason Manford was striding up and down the stage and appearing to have the audience in hysterics. I sat there barely raising a smile, and wondering if this now passes for ‘talent’.

                Brissles:

I agree with Clare – I do feel out of step with so many things. I don’t think they will come as a surprise to many people here:

                – Lack of respect for genuine talent, regardless of whether one actually enjoys the product or not (as above). I have no interest in ballet or dance generally, but I respect the talent and the dedication. I’m prepared to accept that the lack of interest might be my loss.
                – Lack of objective standards in many things, but art and entertainment in particular. For instance I think Tracey Emin is a talentless fraud – no discernible skill whatsoever, and nothing to say.
                – Absolute loathing of what the BBC and much of the MSM have become.

There are many others, but I’m not going to ramble on.

I had the pleasure of meeting Barry Cryer a few years ago and he was incredibly funny in his ordinary conversation, friendly and not a bit stuck up. He didn’t behave like a ‘celeb’, more like that funny chap you meet down the pub sometimes that keeps the whole bar in stitches.

To call Tracey Emin a fraud is a bit unfair, I think. A fraud is someone who is pretending to have talent, but knows he does not have it. Ms Emin seems to me to genuinely believe she has talent because enough gallery owners and art critics have told her so. She is the end product of an artistic culture which sees no difference between the works of Michaelangelo, and an unmade bed by someone from Margate.

I have recently read with interest a few recent articles in the Times about the EU referendum, both for and against , but the readers comments are the best, highly entertaining. Remainers react really badly to being called snobs, so badly that it must be hitting the mark. Given that most Remainers are on the liberal left, apart from a few fat cats, calling them snobs immediately puts them on the defensive and they start trying to justify why they aren’t at all snobbish. This just digs their hole deeper. Great fun and I recommend it whenever you have to speak with one of them.

    • Cranmer says:

Doublethinker, I think as time goes by and the doom-laden predictions of leaving the EU do not seem to materialise, fewer and fewer people are ideologically committed to Remain. At the time of the Referendum a lot of people I know voted Remain mainly on the ‘devil you know’ principle, but now they are seeing that the dire predictions are not happening and in fact, the EU seems to be behaving rather shabbily with its grubby demands for money. So the main Remainers are now the Remoaners, who are essentially puritans wedded to the stalinistic dream of EU domination, and thus humourless and easy to wind up.

I had the misfortune to catch some of the last Any Questions on the radio. Cue a self righteous question along the lines of why are WE more interested in the floods in Texas than in India?! The clear implication being that we are white racists.

I get tired of this. The media does not reflect MY interests. I do not share the BBC’s morbid obsession with the US in general and Trump in particular as it endlessly and tediously campaigns against any and all US Republican presidents. It’s the BBC and it’s fellow travellers which chooses to major on Trump, while ignoring South America, China, Japan and India etc. Not me! Now that they realise they can’t attack Trump over Texas, the BBC loses interest in that.

If you want news these days you have to ignore the news organisations.

The other bit of BBC bias I came across was on Barmier and his views on Brexit. The BBC piece led with one statement by the nutter, then followed it up with another statement from Bampot, and only in third place a statement from Davis. I also noticed later on that while the EU would be quoted as simply stating something as if it was a fact, that the UK would make a ‘claim’ as if the UK statement was contentious.

I think there might be a market for the “liberal” version of this. A large pseudo-fag carried on the roof rack, one button click to connect it to the battery and position it ready for action on the pseudo-fag. Second click, zapped liberal. Third click return to position one.
I will start the run of prototypes immediately. It may not be possible to permazap a liberal without some discomfort being caused. You will just have to tolerate a big grin on your face 24/7.

The BBC played the same word games last year during the referendum. The Remain side “stated” while the Leave side “claimed”. I used it to prove to people that the BBC wasn’t neutral and that nothing it reported could be taken on trust. Once they’d listened to some news bulletins and agreed that the bias was proven I could then give some examples of the lies they were telling, and another convert was won over from the Dark Side.

“Hostile” sounds a bit nasty, doesn’t it? The word “negative” or “sceptical” would have been better.

An example of where the BBC totally ignores a Christian event, even where it involves two of their favourite politicians.

    http://www.dw.com/en/merkel-obama-debate-faith-and-politics/av-38986013

As a generally atheist, not secular, news machine the BBC ignores the dimension of Merkel’s faith in her motivation, as the BBC doesn’t believe any of that stuff is real or matters. You might not share it, or support it, but why should the BBC ignore it? In the same way it now usually refers to the Reverend Dr Martin Luther King as Dr Martin Luther King. The BBC which is so ridiculously fastidious in referring to ‘so called’ Islamic State does not accidentally drop the ‘Reverend’ from MLK. Does the BBC know or care that Mandela was a Christian? PW Botha? No.

Religion only seems to crop up in Beebworld if it is a. Islam or b. Christianity if it somehow shows an inversion of what the BBC thinks is ‘traditional’ Christianity. So gay and lesbian (and at a pinch, straight female) clergy are allowed. Conservative evangelical or anglo-Catholic (‘high’) churchmen don’t get a look in, even if they’re black. To be fair we still do have the excellent Choral Evensong on R3, although the traditional ten to ten morning service has been shoved onto long wave for many years and Sunday Half Hour disappeared to something like 5 am on a Wednesday.

Stuff the Muslims in Burma, and everywhere else.
Because of their history the Hindus must be allowed to carry out the initial attacks on todays Muzzies. Since one Hindu is worth ten Muzzies and 500 million Hindus have been murdered by the contemptible Muzzies an acceptable level of retribution and reprisal for Hindu suffering would be 5,000,000,000 Muzzies.

Have I got the BBC’s account right on this?

Last month the BBC reported that in 1947 India became independent and all the violence was our fault because we partitioned it between the Muslim and non-Muslim populations. This month the BBC is reporting that in 1948 Burma became independent and all the violence is our fault because we didn’t partition it between the Muslim and non-Muslim populations. To the BBC the only common factor seems to be the British involvement – unless you include the fact that where ever you go the Muslim are always the victims of all this inexplicable violence

  9. Beeb Brother says:

The BBC is reporting today that the Police need more money, are overworked and increasingly suffering from mental ill health.

Yet just the other week they were cheerleading the expansion of hate/thought crime legislation. How stressful must that be for them? Rather than focus on spiralling gang violence and terrorism (just three major attacks this year) they now have to police people’s feelings. If I had been a PC listening to the Today programme interview ‘victims of hate crime’ I probably would have dropped dead with a brain aneurysm.

The state should not concern itself with people’s thoughts – hatred is an emotion and thus exists purely in the mind.

Perhaps one could justify an objective test: would a reasonable person have been offended by the words? Judges could construe it strictly and set the bar very high, which would both prevent the floodgates from opening with a deluge of cases and send a message that it it both reasonable and prudent to have a thick skin. Perhaps repeated use of the ‘n’ word would pass the test but mere disagreement or general abuse would not.

The problem is that the test is subjective: whatever the claimant perceives to have been offensive is actionable. It is a preposterously low threshold which is open to abuse. How many jilted lovers or disgruntled former employees will try to get people in trouble on spurious grounds?

How many exchanges are there online every day? How much time and money will this cost the Police force? Ultimately could it cost lives when we know how extreme the threat of terrorism is?

Of course this is effectively a Sharia blasphemy law masquerading as a noble quest to end ‘hatred.’ In these glorious diverse days, we are only a word or cartoon away from mass rioting. So anyone who dares criticise a certain ideology too openly or to the wrong person will feel a boot stamping on their face, and this will clearly be a situation we are stuck with forever.

    The Islamist BBC are furious.

Their LEAD story in the BBC Indian News Section is headlined: “Why a state wants to ignore India’s Mughals: Maharashtra has sparked controversy with a bid to remove Mughal history from its textbooks.”

Click onto the link and you are taken to a BBC pro-Islam propaganda video.

It begins by linking the Mughal Empire (Muslim warlords that conquered and subjugated India), to some very nice buildings in India.

It then expresses its absolute horror that one state in India should diminish its teaching of the Islamist Warlords in favour of Hindu related history relevant to the state. A BBC reporter interviews someone who says that due to limitation in book size, one school textbook has had to reduce its content on the Mughal Empire.

The BBC then says that right – wing Hindu Nationalists are on the rise and are making claims that the Mughal Empire was not very nice. The BBC then say that many Mughal Emperors were very nice Muslim people and maintained peace in India.

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/world-asia-india-41128164/why-a-state-wants-to-ignore-part-of-india-s-history

In reality the Mughal Empire, were Muslim invaders that slaughtered millions of Hindus and Sikhs, but the BBC do not mention this.
    https://www.sikhnet.com/news/islamic-india-biggest-holocaust-world-history

I am asking myself why the feck are the BBC taking such a close eye on minor education matters overseas?

Because the BBC see themselves as the protectors and promoters of Islam worldwide and here they are furious that one state in India is reducing its school coverage of what it sees as the glorious Islamic past (the Mughal Empire).

“Told from this first-hand perspective, and backed with impressive research and evidence, the book addresses the disappointing failure of multiculturalism, Angela Merkel’s U-turn on migration, the lack of repatriation and the Western fixation on guilt. Murray travels to Berlin, Paris, Scandinavia, Lampedusa and Greece to uncover the malaise at the very heart of the European culture, and to hear the stories of those who have arrived in Europe from far away. In each chapter he also takes a step back to look at the bigger issues which lie behind a continent’s death-wish, answering the question of why anyone, let alone an entire civilisation, would do this to themselves? He ends with two visions of Europe – one hopeful, one pessimistic – which paint a picture of Europe in crisis and offer a choice as to what, if anything, we can do next.

I am reading it second time around and it is probably the best book ever written that exposes the extent of political /EU indecisiveness and arrogance along with the contempt the elite left have for anyone else.

I particularly like his use of quotes comments and statistics that even the BBC fact checker couldn’t get wrong. However it also depresses me reading it and makes me wonder why there hasn’t been an uprising yet. We should look to the V4. Above all this is not a book on racism or xenophobia as the Guardian reported – it is an honest, rational and well researched piece of work that deserves to be promoted more.

The US will table a resolution at the United Nations later, calling for further sanctions against North Korea, after the secretive state tested a nuclear bomb at least three times as powerful as that dropped on Hiroshima in 1945. Japan is reportedly developing plans to get 60,000 of its people out of South Korea in the event of war.

Nikki Haley, US ambassador to the UN, said her country did not want conflict but its patience with North Korea was “not unlimited”. Its leader, Kim Jong-un, was “begging for war”, she added.

North Korea’s biggest ally, China, has called for dialogue, so the crisis can be “resolved peacefully”.”

Maybe donate some Winalot and wedge the AA guns in the ‘up’ position lest a near relative of the peace loving supreme leader speaks out of turn or fails to applaud quickly enough?

Then they interview some woman who used to work at the state office and she (via web camp) is pushed by Kirsty Wark to try and agree that Bush followed by Trump is to blame for the current situation.

Well, I suppose how much you might welcome this uncharacteristic level of positivity from the national broadcaster very much depends on whether you think it a generally good idea for the government to touch alomost every aspect of your life.

Oh, just a minute, let me clarify – this is Nicola Sturgeon’s SNP Scottish Government’s set of proposed Bills the BBC were welcoming. You didn’t think the British Tory admistration was getting a positive spin this morning, did you?

Bacon’s awkward pause is telling – they clearly lie but justify it because their ultimate goal is ostensibly noble.

I think the media’s tantrum with Trump is not just because of his politics but because he is exposing how dishonest they are. They have been getting away with murder for decades. That they go all in against him yet still lose must feel emasculating. It is the same with Brexit.

      What is halal meat? {bbc.co.uk may2014}
“The Islamic form of slaughtering animals or poultry, dhabiha, involves killing through a cut to the jugular vein, carotid artery and windpipe. … Animals must be alive and healthy at the time of slaughter and all blood is drained from the carcass. During the process, a Muslim will recite a dedication, know as tasmiya or shahada.”

      – BBC 2010 report omits incantation to Allah
      – BBC 2014 uses words ‘blood is drained from the carcass‘ rather than 2010 – ‘still alive and conscious‘ (some improvement as introducing stunning?)
      – BBC 2014 Stunning cannot be used to kill an animal, according to the ‘Halal Food Authority’ ( ‘Morality Police’? Plus they still want it alive and conscious)

Hold on here … go to the ‘Halal Food Authority – Definitions Of Halal‘ …..
… a Muslim will recite tasmiya orshahada … (not allowed by a non-Muslim)
      1. An animal should not be dead prior to slaughter
      2. A Muslim should perform slaughter (for Halal – MUSLIMS NEED ONLY APPLY!)
      3. Any flowing blood of the carcass should be completely drained
      4. Choice of modern and in vogue method has to be considered with caution and, it should be in line with Islamic principles (Sharia principles)

      – For Halal – MUSLIMS NEED ONLY APPLY – if this is true then it’s religious/employment discrimination/privilege at the slaughter work place.

Relates to “This farm shop in Lancashire was on the brink of shutting down before its owners made the switch to Halal meat. (via BBC Asian Network)” post by Guest Who – video does not explain what is Halal is or the process

It seems to me that if anyone relied entirely on the BBC (especially in the form of the Today programme) to understand the Bell Pottinger affair, they would be left wanting (or is it just me?). ‘Today’ seems to have laundered their explanation in order to make the outrageous behaviour of BP as obscure as possible. They did mention Gupta and Zuma and that the BP was accused of stoking ‘racial tensions’, but without explaining exactly what the ‘racial tensions’ were. So I spent some time digging into this via the Democratic Alliance (SA) web sites and others, and eventually found the clearest account in The Guardian (there’s a novelty!) https://www.theguardian.com/business/2017/sep/04/potentially-racially-divisive-report-censures-pr-firm-bell-pottinger
“Certain material that we have seen that was created for the campaign was negative or targeted towards wealthy white South African individuals or corporates and/or was potentially racially divisive and/or potentially offensive and was created in breach of relevant ethical principles,” said the law firm. “The firm is accused of stirring up anger about “white monopoly capital” [i.e. it was a smear campaign against whites] and the “economic apartheid” to draw attention away from the controversial Guptas, who run a media to mining conglomerate and have been accused of benefiting [and certainly did] financially from their close links to the South African president, Jacob Zuma. [my insertions in square brackets]
A correspondent in SA says: ” Bell Pottinger … were given a brief to come up with a campaign to sow racial discord and cover up for the dirty deeds [that the Guptas and Zumas] carried out. On behalf of the Gupta-owned Oakbay Capital, they carried out a racist campaign targeting whites in this country. People are being killed in SA because they are white and Bell Pottinger were paid for developing and promoting a policy that blame White South Africans for stealing all the money/capitol – to deflect the [ANC] government’s and the Gupta’s theft of billions of Rands is nothing less than colluding in this theft and murder”.
And another comment from SA: “The ‘white monopoly capital campaign’ targeted then Finance Minister, Pravin Gordhan and his deputy Mcebisi Jonas, who tried to expose the Gupta’s influence”.
    ————–
It is shocking, but not surprising, that ‘Today’ was careful only to mention a ‘racial campaign’ without explaining that it was a racial campaign against whites. That would have overtuned the left’s mantra that racialism can only work one way. The BBC, biased and corrupt in every nook and cranny.

I have to say I don’t have much sympathy with a group that calls itself a “National Socialist youth organisation”. If the BBC story is to be taken at face value, they seem a thoroughly unpleasant lot. It’s the fact that they appear to have been arrested for “thought crime” that worries me. A bit like Minority Report without the PreCogs.

The men are being held on suspicion of being concerned in under Section 41 of the Terrorism Act 2000; namely on suspicion of being members of a proscribed organisation.

After years of complaining here that the BBC won’t use the word terrorism when it clearly applies, the authorities now look like they are using the word when it doesn’t. The the commission, preparation and instigation of acts of terrorism appears to cover merely being a member of a group the Government has decided might be a danger to others. Yet we could all, I’m sure, think of other groups that surely represent a far greater danger who are positively fawned over by the authorities and the BBC.

A couple of years back, I mentioned the fatwa against Salman Rushdie and received a flurry of lively e-mails. It was Valentine’s Day 1989, you’ll recall, when the Ayatollah Khomeini issued his extraterritorial summary judgment on a British subject, and shortly thereafter large numbers of British Muslims were marching through English cities openly calling for Rushdie to be killed.

A reader in Bradford recalled asking a West Yorkshire officer on the street that day why the various “Muslim community leaders” weren’t being arrested for incitement to murder. The officer said they’d been told to “play it cool”. The calls for blood got more raucous. My correspondent asked his question again. The policeman told him to “F— off, or I’ll arrest you.

The scum at the BBC will take any chance to denigrate the British military while at the same time worshipping any military from a country which are our enemies .

      “only 649 MPs to go”
That tweets is obviously rhetorical ..and a prosecution wouldn’t stand up in court.
It’d be like saying someone humming “F*ck the police” is inciting rape of police officers.

And in the real world. Any parent faced with a bearded bloke wearing a tutu wanting to read to their children would tell the creep to f-k off or make him worthy of wearing such attire.

Transgender Spectrum-Related Vocabulary, Slang & Terminology

        Cisgender:
Someone whose gender identity matches the gender role they were assigned at birth; a person who is not transgender. The Latin prefix ‘cis’ means “on the same side of.” Cisgender is preferable to “biological,” “genetic” or “real” male or female.

        Cisgender Privilege:
The privileges cisgender people have because their gender identity matches their assigned gender role and because they are considered ‘normal.’ For example, cisgender people don’t have to worry about violence and institutionalized discrimination simply due to the fact they are cisgender.

        Cissexism/Cisgender Supremacy:
The institutional and societal marginalization of transgender identified persons; expressing hate and bigotry toward transgender people.

        Misgendering:
To refer to a person using terms (pronouns, nouns, adjectives, etc.) that express the wrong gender, either accidentally or on purpose. Calling a transgender woman ‘Sir’ or transgender boy ‘Miss.’

Please note, only ‘Cisgender’ have privilege.

“Alice laughed: “There’s no use trying,” she said; “one can’t believe impossible things.” “I daresay you haven’t had much practice,” said the Queen. “When I was younger, I always did it for half an hour a day. Why, sometimes I’ve believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast.”

The blurb for the London show is less obvious than that
but the agenda is clear in the title
: “WILTON’S MUSIC HALL OFFERS GENDER-FLUID STORIES FOR CHILDREN”
“will encourage children to be true to themselves, feel confident and to embrace differences between themselves and others, no matter what those differences may be.”

I would say pantomime is different, it doesn’t actually set any role models to children
rather it’s theatre with the exaggeration ie Dames are much uglier than real women
and First boy has obvious female sexuality.
It’s message is that men and women are different.
