Tommy Robinson sues the police!

Update March 12: Ezra Levant is doing a fine job reporting from the trial on Twitter.

Yesterday, March 11th, Ezra Levant got an urgent request from his friend Tommy to hop over from Canada to London and then Peterborough to report on his suit against the police in civil court. It’s probably unnecessary since there are so many fair and impartial UK media people keen to report honestly on anything to do with Tommy Robinson. John Sweeney will most likely be the first one in court, representing that most-trusted broadcaster known as the BBC.

UK media will no doubt be appalled and outraged at the harassment of Tommy and his family by the Cambridgeshire police, and will therefore report on the trial in impeccable and comprehensive detail. But just to be sure, he wanted Ezra Levant with him for his input and support.

I suppose Ezra has already landed and has made his way to Peterborough for the beginning of proceedings at 10am. The exercise is costly and he has appealed for help. Info on developments can be found here and donations made for those able so to do.

Here’s Tommy from yesterday, discussing the issue.

    Fist!
Isn’t this sub-judice and thus will have restrictions on reporting? At least that will be the MSM reasoning.
Or if not it will have a D-notice slapped on it – just including Tommies name (not his real one of course) will be verboten.

      AWOL,

I Googled a bit before posting and it seems there is no jury for a civil trial except in cases of libel, so maybe reporting restrictions will be less severe or absent.

        TT,
Correct, it is a civil action. Any member of the public can attend the case hearing. Indeed, the public are encouraged to attend to observe our justice in action. It would be tricky to prevent details of the case appearing outside the court.
On that thought, I am reminded of my time living/working in Saudi. Similar to above, (and being obviously white/western) I was forcibly jostled to the front of a baying crowd to watch a punishment of a hand being amputated.

The police only arrest solitary Christian preachers for “breach of the peace”. This reason is justified as preaching the Gospel in England gives rise to thoughts of violence in so many of our new residents.

What we have proven Today is, that not only do we have a corrupt media but a corrupt system which supports Police persecution.

To top it all off the costs of which I am now ordered to pay, which have also been inflated by the Police, are in excess of £40,000! Which is made up of £20,000 ordered to be paid within 14 days then reverting to over £40,000 if that deadline is not met. That is 4 times more than what my court costs were to bring this case in the first place, absolutely shocking I know! This was done by the Police in order to get me in a position to accept and take a deal from them, of which I REFUSED because freedom and justice have no price!

You were ‘fist’…? Well I declare that I was first !

Yes mr Levant was on the overnight red eye and the British State let him into their country .

Bedford police will either apply for the case to be thrown out or ask for more time in order to get TR convicted in the political trial put up by the Tory AG .as well as pile on the costs and stress of course.
They might even arrest him in front of his family again with some eager young lefty cop looking for a quick promotion .Lefty mob will be ignored as usual.

Talking of which the AG QC MP for somewhere nice and white – is due to deliver an objective legal opinion on the backstop nonsense some time today . Mrs May has told him to do a good job and your missus will be ‘Lady Cox’ in the PMs Resignation ‘dis honours ‘ .

Apparently the government doesn’t want him questioned in the Commons in case the truth comes out but I don’t think he ll get a choice . So he ll do his ‘booming attorney ‘ act and wing it for the Peerage ….

Interesting, Fedup2. I guess the judge could just say, sorry we are not delaying this trial for no good reason.

Not sure which issue will grab the most attention – Brexit, opposed by practically the entire MSM or Tommy’s trial, ignored by the MSM but followed by millions on social media.

The video I linked to above of Tommy discussing the issue has already had 123 000 views since it was streamed live 11 hours ago.

Look here, France, The USA and Iran among other places and apparently no one opposes globalist control. Except of course “right wing extremists” The libmob catchphrase of a generation. I wonder how much they influenced the far-left bbc collective to spend time and effort concocting their appalling programme? I wonder who commissioned this filthy effort? I wonder if the intent was to air it before Tommy’s court cases in order to influence public opinion and the judges?

I asked if there were any tweets I had done that she wanted me to delete; she declined.
I asked for advice on tweets going forward. She suggested not giving my opinion or commentary on the proceedings, but just reporting it, more in the style of a stenographer (my word).//
.. I am not sure if the judge is legally right
..Once something has been said in court it is public domain
..and there is not law against expressing opinion.. to the limit that you can’t make threats
Calling the police cameraman pervy ..is not illegal I would have thought

      Oh Ezra still speaking
I asked the judge to clarify if her suggestion applied only to my tweets from the court, or other comments outside the court, or even my commentaries after the court case itself was done. Her advice was to refrain from political commentary until after the judgement was issued.
I was deferential (as I truly am — this is her court, and this is Tommy’s lawsuit. I am not a party; I have no standing here). But I respectfully made the point that opinion journalism is a species of journalism. I didn’t want to belabour the point, so I submitted.

I am here because I believe in justice and the hope it will come from this trial. I’m here because I know the BBC, Sky News, the tabloids, etc. will not cover this trial fairly. I’m here because Tommy’s a friend. And I’m here because hundreds of viewers crowdfunded me to be here.

But I am not here to reform the UK’s approach to journalism and justice. That’s not my job, and I’m not equipped to do it. And I’m certainly not here to get into quarrels with judges, or to interfere with their proceedings — however they interpret that.

I note Tommy was imprisoned for 10 weeks for reporting — with colourful commentary — outside a court in Leeds last May. I don’t need to be another test case in that. But it is certainly something that the UK — the media, lawyers, judges and mostly citizens — should address.
So I will submit. And for the remainder of this trial, I will report as a stenographer would do — bloodlessly. No commentary, no view. That is not how I’m built, but I’m in the judge’s house, in a foreign land. That seems just a little bit more foreign to me today
I say again: the judge has not ordered me to do anything; the judge has not even asked me to do anything. Her answers to my questions were slightly cryptic. But out of an abundance of caution, I’ll just stop opining, at least until her verdict is in. //

\\ Sgt Street says he made no notes as no section 35 was served.//

“It is very convenient that, once again, written evidence seems to disappear when police conduct is questioned.”

      StewGreen,

Been having Internet hassles but finally got to read all of Ezra’s tweets and the Cambridge live blog.

Interesting that the cops’ lawyer and the judge are showing such interest in Ezra’s tweets. Also interesting that one guy from Canada can ‘intimidate’ a whole bunch of cops.

Seems the left have taken over the force, er sorry, I meant service.

Seems they see Tommy as a far-right thug who probably goes around beating up gays and Jews. They must be really puzzled by Ezra. How can a Jewish guy, and a foreigner to boot, be such a close and loyal buddy of Tommy Robinson?!

I know I’m speculating a bit here, but perhaps that’s why the cops’ lawyer got involved and then involved the judge who then called the meeting with Ezra.

Also interesting that Tommy’s lawyer seems uninvolved in this sideshow.

      10:30 start tomorrow.

      G.W.F.,

Yes. I read several of those comments. Good to see that practically all were sympathetic to Tommy and Ezra.

I’m wondering if this is accurate from the blurb under the video: PLUS the judge has now told Ezra to stop live-tweeting from the courtroom, or even outside it!

If so, that would be drastic.

Do we know in what way are Ezra’s tweets prejudicial to Tommy’s court case against the police?

Are other journalists also tweeting from the court? And have they also been told to stop giving personal comments in their tweets?

How many police people are spending time monitoring Ezra’s and others’ tweets? Shouldn’t they be out harassing innocent people sitting in pubs with their families?

        john in Cheshire,

Yes, the cops waste a lot of time checking tweets when they could be out harassing innocents.

Re Ezra’s tweets, the judge expressed concern about him interfering with police witnesses, for example, during testimony one tweet mocked the response of a witness – I think it was sergeant Street.

At the beginning of today’s hearing, Ezra tweeted that the cops’ lawyer was watching one of Ezra’s or Tommy’s videos. (Ezra later indicated he’s not sure which one.)

I’m not sure what the law is here, but perhaps Ezra could be held in contempt. He’s being careful today. He’s in real danger of being banned from the country. All it takes to be denied entry to Britain these days is to have an opinion the elite don’t like.

There’s a guy from Cambridgeshire Live News doing a live blog from the courtroom. It’s straight reporting of proceedings without opinion.

Police constable Mason has been giving testimony today. He has broken ranks with Sgt Street and other who are trying to say Tommy was a risk re violence. Street’s evidence is that he was told as much by a drunken patron, can you believe it. Mason is quite firm in his insistence that Tommy was not a risk. Takes guts to go against the narrative.

I would have liked to see Tommy’s lawyer dig around more to find out how far up the chain the rot goes here. Perhaps she still will. So far it’s got up to inspector Matthew Johnson.

John in Cheshire, I agree. The fact that the Police spend so much time scouring the internet for innocent people to harrass means that I have no sympathy at all for their claims that they are undermanned.

As far as I see it, if they want more police to walk beats in problem areas get the ones scouring the internet to do it. Otherwise I support cuts in their numbers as long as the lost jobs are the ones that are trying to stop free speech.

I think it’s probable that the judge and other people don’t understand Twitter.
If press just wanted to report words said in the court they could just cutNpaste from the court stenographer’s transcript.
Ezra adds info and opinion like X said “this … but that contradicts what he said 6 months ago ” etc.
The judge thinks that if Ezra didn’t add those contexts no one would ever know.
But the nature of Twitter is that 30s after a sterile tweet from the court, someone in Russia or Australia will likely retweet that with the extra context added anyway.
And such context is great for us bystanders… and justice.

I think it would be best if Ezra had just done an end of day summary – despite there being no jury to undermine .

The Judge is looking for a way to dump the case on someone else as opposed to having to decide it herself – particularly since the coppers in volved have been shown to be thick thugs who don’t know their own powers .

On Friday the judge will say the case should have been settled before court and if she decides in favour of TR she’ll find a way to punish him- particulary with the forthcoming political trial authorised by a diminished AG QC MP ….

    • Van Helsing says:

      Fedup2,

That’s exactly what Ezra should have done. The time for opinions is when the case is over. The one thing that will (probably) save him is that he’s not a UK national and is genuinely unfamiliar with the English court system.

If TR loses the case, he’ll be found liable in costs. And that’s more than likely to be ‘punishment’ enough in anyone’s eyes.

Does the word stitch-up come from the way a judge weaves a false tapestry out of the evidence presented ?
I’m guessing that other people would say TR has strong grounds for appeal
I was expecting it to go the other way… and that the police would be the ones appealing

Not going too well in the summing up from judge:

Judge “satisfied that [Robinson] was a risk-based supporter”

“Mr Lennon’s behaviour towards Sgt Street gave Sgt street further cause to be concerned.

The uniformed officers were perfectly entitled to follow Mr Lennon at that time. In my judgement it was proper operational procedure to stop Mr Lennon from re-entering the pub.

The allegation that Cambridgeshire police deliberately targeted him in my judgement must necessarily fail.

There is no evidence for the inequality claim, and it fails.

In my judgement there is no evidence, relying on the evidence Mr Lennon gave himself, there had been a breach of [his human rights].

This claim for harassment in my judgement must fail.”

Yes, if the cops win the appeal case it will surely set a precedent.

I believe I’m right in saying that Tommy Robinson’s activism began when he saw returning British troops being vilely abused by Muslims in Luton while the cops not only gave the Muslims a free ride but abused ordinary Brits who had come to welcome the troops home.

Anyway, it’s good that he didn’t take the money originally offered by the cops. At least now their abusive behavior has been exposed more widely.
