Not sure why May has to stay in for another excruciating two weeks. She should never have become PM in the first place.
I was flabbergasted that she chose to speak about her dealings with the EU as if they were honourable and in the best interest of the country and were really going to deliver Brexit, if only parliament had agreed. If she really believes all that, she is quite insane.
And then she went on to express the hope that her successor would carry her valiant efforts on – as if she is hoping that a change in PM will still mean the continuation of the farcical slow-motion ‘Brexit’ surrender she’s been involved in for so long and at such cost to her party and the country.
I think the single most absurd thing May did was to promise to step down if only MPs would vote for her ‘deal.’ She was saying, in other words, accept this wonderful thing I’ve created with the help of those nice people in power in the EU and I’ll regard my role as fulfilled and my great contribution complete.
That amount of self-denial and denial of evident realities is simply staggering.

It is ironic that two Conservative Party leaders – as Prime Minister – have in recent years been given the opportunity to turn their Party fortunes around (after Thatcher’s final failure and Major’s grindingly grey years) and be heroes in the eyes of the nation, if perhaps not in the eyes of the present EU overseers.
As I have posted before, ‘Dave’ could have been considered doubly honourable as PM, keeping the commitment he made to hold the EU Referendum in the first place and then taking the UK out of the EU (something he said he did not want but initially said he would deliver), with or without a deal (I prefer the latter) within two years of the end of June 2016.
Now, two more Conservative leaders have proved themselves highly unreliable or untrustworthy, or both, along with Heath, Thatcher and Major.
I never, ever, thought that Iain Duncan Smith (along with the much more impressive Michael Howard) would ever be made to look good as a Conservative Party leader but – amazingly – it has now happened thus!
Ooops! I have just been reminded that William Hague also led the Conservative Party.

I do not want the UK to have disproportionate influence on the world. I do not want the UK to hide from the world. I do not want the UK protected from the world.
I would like the UK to spend a period of time – some decades? – looking after its people at home (and abroad when necessary) but living quietly, with minimal governance. I would like the UK to be at peace with itself. I would like the UK to modernise itself, not live in some sort of previous and very past ‘past’. I would like the UK to let its natural inventiveness and enterprise flourish in all sorts of areas of life. I would like the UK to trade with the world.

We didn’t vote to JOIN the Common Market. Under our constitution any fundamental change (e.g. ceding control to a foreign power) must be put to the people for authorisation.
Harold Wilson (the crafty bugger) knew we had been signed up to the Common Market illegally (and contrary to the Coronation Oath) and put it to the people in a vote to REMAIN to correct this.
I think they passed the Act and then got it ratified by lies . It was only a common market in 1973. The pitch was – cheaper good but nothing much else will change .
Same argument used when various immigration acts were passed so that various thirdworlders could be imported without reference to us .

Spinning Reith, you are quite correct. Ted Heath relied on that quaint old thing – a Party Manifesto, dismissed recently by Heseltine or Clarke or both – from the 1970 General Election. Because it was there, albeit as the last item, IIRC, on the Party Manifesto, Heath stated no further vote was necessary.

That’s to an extent past history because there have been two more recent updating Treaties in relation to the hijack formerly known as the EEC: Maastricht and Lisbon.
But, BUT, more importantly, again IIRC, it was an EEC/EC suggestion (if not requirement) with the Maastricht Treaty, that member States ratify with a public vote or specifically waive in their Parliament their right to do so. John Major refused to give one to the UK. Seem to recall he railroaded through a Parliamentary vote with a bit of Harold Wilson type obfuscation. Other nations voted but not the UK. One or two rejected it first time around and were made to vote again. Denmark briefly became heroes for that – as well as Peter Schmeicel.
Do I recall correctly that with the Lisbon Treaty, Gordon Brown did not turn up on time to sign? Also, having promised the electorate a vote on any further EC Treaty, originally Blair and Brown when the former was PM, GB then refused to actually call it when the time came?
I also recall Ted Heath being specifically challenged about the Federal unifying State ambitions of the then EEC, publicly by Enoch Powell and Peter Shore and on TV by Robin Day, I think. Heath – as we now know – lied.

For me the strangest point of May’s resignation speech was her emotion at the end. She was either
1) Genuinely upset at not being able to fulfill the wishes of her EU masters and completely humiliate Britain, or
2) She has deceived the country to such an extent over the past 3 years, she has started to believe her own lies, and she genuinely believed the drivel in her speech.
Who knows, but I’m just so happy she will shortly be gone, what an utter disaster she has been for democracy and for our country.
You know you kind of go – if only – if only they Tories had been tough with the EU and started on the basis of ‘ no deal ‘ until they show a mutual benefit in a deal .

I do get pissed off though, with tv journalists who state she is the worst PM since the war. These journalists were born in the 70’s and 80’s so haven’t a clue who was any good or useless.
Antony Eden made a cock up with Suez in the 50s. Wilson had problems with Ian Smith’s government in Rhodesia. We lived in a 3 day week with no electricity under Heath. What would the likes of Lewis Goodall , Sky’s latest journalistic infant, have to say at living like that I wonder.
Theresa May may not have a ‘legacy’, but neither did a lot of PMs since the War.

I suspect many of us here grew up expecting our politicians and prime ministers to have the country’s best interests at heart, even if you didn’t agree with them.
Of course there has always been incompetence and venality and sex scandals along the way. There would also be the odd national humiliation like Suez too.
But if I could pin it down as to when it all started to go wrong, and – like HG Wells’ martians ‘they drew their plans against us’ I would say it began under John Major. Then it accelerated massively under Blair, and it’s been getting worse ever since.
It’s as if post-Thatcher it was decided that any whiff of populist right-wing ideas had to be completely stamped out. We were being primed for mass immigration, censorship and told that a dog is a horse and how dare you say otherwise.
So for me the worst Prime Ministers are pretty much all from the last 20 years. Something changed. The crooks and non-entities that are allowed to govern us now might as well be martians as they seem to live on a different planet!
Thank you IMNALY, I couldn’t agree more. I didn’t mention the incompetantancy of the Millennium bunch of PM’s because young and old alike have them fresh in our memories. And for most the present incumbent of the post is always ‘the worst’. Aside from Blair, my own personal ‘worst’ was Brown and his tax grab on pension pots, – which appeared to range from 10 billion to 100 billion, but whichever way you look at it, he more than any PM catastrophically buggered up retirement plans for everyone paying into a pension.

Don’t know if anyone has watched the excellent docudrama ‘Chernobyl’, but it really does illustrate everything wrong with left wing societies.
