Long Weekend Thread 20 March 2020

Spare a thought for those biased BBC employees in departments which no longer exist such as Sport . It’s a pity other branches of the biased organisation are not extinguished as well… instead of spending their time undermining the response to the threat from the Chinese virus .

    What do I say?
It’s odd that Boris always goes to Laura K first at his daily news briefing – even when her question merely asks about something she’s just been told.

Does the BBC have some sort of hold over what our democratically elected government can say or do? Boris should tell the BBC tossers to go and do one and immediately cancel their hold over the minds of the British population. Big Brother would be gone.

It is very annoying and noticeable that Boris does this. It is akin to Winston Churchill giving a press conference during WWII and inviting a representative from the Reich Ministry of Public Enlightenment and Propaganda to ask questions on behalf of the Nazis.

The concept of ‘key workers’ reminds me of a company that I once worked for that went in for ‘crisis management’ or, more likely ‘management by crisis’.

As each financial quarter was coming to an end there was often a panic to get some large-value item ‘out of the door’ and the revenue ‘on the books’. One particular quarter an edict went out that only jobs with a charge number related to a certain high-value contract could be processed by the photocopy/print room.

At that time we were operating a sort of factory within a factory and my section was producing equipment that formed the heart of most of the other projects. I found myself in the position of not being able to release £250k worth of kit because we couldn’t get the £1’s worth of paperwork printed off, not having the right ‘charge numbers’. My ‘customer’ was the project that had been given exclusive priority by senior management.

So for want of my £1 ‘nail I was unable to release my £250k ‘horse’ to win their £5M ‘battle’!

The moral is that it is the job of management to ‘facilitate’, which often means just letting people get on with their normal jobs. It normally takes 60 million people to run Britain; six people in the COBRA room don’t stand a chance.

The BBC is fully aware of studies into the use of chloroquine and remdesivir

“Further research has indicated that remdesivir was able to inhibit the ability of the 2019-nCOV from infecting human cells in laboratory tests, but it has still to be approved by regulators for use against 2019-nCOV in patients. The same study also found that chloroquine, a medication used to prevent and treat malaria, was also effective against the virus. A clinical trial involving two drugs used for treating HIV is also underway at a hospital in Wuhan, China”

“A 2013 study found that Muslim clerics who incorporated conservation messages into sermons raised public awareness and concern for those issues. In some senses, the religion embodies environmentalism, says Jeanne Mckay, senior researcher at Durrell Institute of Conservation and Ecology at the University of Kent who led the study.”

It did strike me that all of the most protected workers are in public sector….so the private sector pay the taxes to fund public sector (inc BBC) wages and pensions and when the shit hits the fan who is at the back of the queue.. the private sector…

Why don’t those public sector workers who are paid over average national wage and no longer have to commute/pay for child care etc take a 10% wage cut to help fund the private sector off of whom they have survived for so long..

I know it isn’t real money the Government is giving out but it will affect the balance of payments debt etc and if we emerge in to recession who will be hit the hardest again – yes the private sector..

I am stuck in Portugal in a motorhome, feeling somewhat detached from ‘home news’. I’ve also deliberately avoided the bbbc for several weeks because I’m not interested in how the virus disruption has affected women’s football or transgender lipstick.

However, I reluctantly visited the bbbc website today to see what progress might have been made by the government and sure enough, received confirmation that Boris Johnson is talking absolute corona.

If only he had listened to Prof. Fizzcrank, dutifully contacted by the bbbc, who has stated that it won’t take twelve weeks to beat the virus. No sirree! It’s going to take two years and in any case it will mutate and turn into some quatermass-like blob and even after you’ve caught it and think you’ve got over it’s going to keep getting you with repeat attacks for ever and ever and we are thus destined to be permanently miserable without a doubt…..

One of the main reason why there is such a high death rate
in Italy , Spain and worsening situation in London is the
amount of illegal immigrants in these places. There are far less
        in Russia and eastern Europe.
For example in London where there could be up to 100,000
illegal immigrants these folk are living four or five
        in one bedroom flats.
They have to work , be it with a cold , the flu or CORONAVIRUS. Most
of them will of course get better. BUT in the meantime they
are spreading this very contagious disease all over the place.
They can’t follow the Government guidelines, even if they wanted to, about mixing with people.
I know this might sound crazy to many especially coming from
me. BUT maybe there should be some kind of amnesty for
these illegals so that they can get some protection which would be good for the rest of the legal population.
Please tell me if I am being crazy. But remember we are talking
about NOW. And the situation we are in.

Yes, by some quick thinking we managed to get into a remote part of Portugal near Evora. This just before motorhome sites are potentially obliged to close the gates to new arrivals.
Counter to the doom and gloom I just read on the bbbc the birds are singing, it’s peaceful, there are fragrant wild flowers aplenty, the sky is blue and there is time to dwell in this old land steeped in history

Although I’m not exactly wandering the streets of Londonistan there is a ‘febrile’ feeling largely concentrated around supermarkets .

I think that initial panic buying will reduce as time passes -if- it is shown that key food supplies continue to be available and restocking takes place – particularly – mysteriously – with toilet rolls .

I’m really suffering – I was forced to buy full fat cravendale yesterday instead of semi skinned – but we all need to make sacrifices ….

Permit a small diversion. Speaking of lactose addictions or otherwise: there was a shortage of budget yogurts at a well-known foreign supermarket invader recently. Some of the more expensive ones were ‘Yukk’ in the taste test.

As a fairly responsible, thinking, adult (unlike a nurse the BBC forced me to listen too) and faced with a choice of near adjacent stores, Snuffy set out to see what alternatives might be on offer. Grabbed a pack of four and headed for the checkout.

Taste test result – lovely! Fruit test – definitely there and real.

Then I read the small print. Made from soya. Oh dear, full on environmental guilt fell upon me. Oh woe! Thrice woe!! I have sinned against Greta and the Horror Bin.

@ snuffy at 9.02 am Maybe this will help, I was told by my osteopath to stop drinking milk as it was bad for my complexion so being a Yorkshire Lass and needing milk in my tea I experimented and found soy milk with added calcium and vitamins was a good substitute. I’m drinking soy milk on medical advice, that’s how I soothe my mind and it has worked.

MrsK, thanks for that tip. Unfortunately the milk goes downward (including my shirt &/or sweater – am getting old) when I drink it. I might try pouring some over my head to soothe my mind after the BBC have been at it. Good tip.

Seriously, though – der Deutsche Supermarkt in my neck of the woods has had huge supplies of longlife milk and also almond and soya milk, despite any panic buying going on there. I’ve bought one carton of each ICE (that’s In Case of Emergencies) although the long-life is ‘thin’ milk and things will have to get really serious before that is consumed.

I like the thought of almond milk. 1. It puts the Horror Bin’s and Greta’s respective noses out of joint, and, 2. I’m nuts anyway and nuts for nuts. 🙂

A BUG for BORIS. The beeb sees a chance to get at Boris and government again, this time via politicising the virus. This impression started last night with Fiona’s Question time. Nothing government is doing is good enough. Labour would obviously have done so much better (although Andy Burnham tried not to play that card too strongly).
Listening to merely a snatch of Toady, I get the impression that this is the perfect chance for beeb to declare that govt is ‘not doing enough’ in a score of areas. Then again, I had switched on when McDonnell was coming to an end, so it may simply have been a bad moment.
The sneering tone adopted by Webb when it comes to discussing Boris/government, is always a give-away. It emerged when he had a little chat with a poet who read us ‘Northern Morning’, and speculation on what a ‘Southern’ morning might have been like.
Thankfully, the Bishop who did ‘Thought for the Day’ didn’t also feel the need to politicise the virus.
Anyway, Matt Hancock is on, so we will hear whether there is ‘impartiality’. At the moment he is being forced to listen to the heart-wrenching report from the nurse, who came across empty shelves at the end of her shift.
He is playing it well, though.

Is it only me that gets fed up with the BBC using nurses to make emotive presentations…they ain’t all angels as one of my friends found out after being pushed aside by one in supermarket…

Everyone is in the same boat – at least as a nurse she is still getting paid and probably overtime…

I work in NHS so see behind the publicity – there are fantastic people there just like in every walk of life but they are doing their job – one for which they are trained and paid….just like everyone..now might be a different situation but it is still what they are trained for and paid to do…

So BBC take some responsibility – stop with the sensationalist emotive hysteria creating stories it just ramps up bad behaviour…

If she really is a qualified nurse, with the level of intelligence required for that, and she has a family (and husband?) but no food in the house at all what does that say about her?

I’d be cautious about believing it.

Actually, I know why. City Mayors are currently not exactly covering themselves in a lot of glory as so-called ‘leaders’. “Oh, hallo there, Sadiq. Didn’t see you cowering in that corner.”

In addition, the Covid Crisis shows Mayors up for what they are in a small country like the UK with devolved governance in the Union – mayors are an unnecessary, expensive, wasteful, luxury.

Listened in to the, “World’s Radio Station” in the small hours. A programme called, ‘Assignment’ which focused on the serious housing shortage in Ireland which, commentators explained, has not seen any improvement and, indeed, gets worse by the day. The programme lightly (needless to say) touched upon immigration. No mention of the plan to flood Ireland with muslims/blacks.
“In 2008, Ireland had the highest birth rate (18.1 per 1,000), lowest death rate (6.1 per 1,000) and highest net-migration rate (14.1 per 1,000) in the entire European Union – and the largest population growth rate (4.4%) in the 27-member bloc as a result.[11]” – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demographics_of_the_Republic_of_Ireland#Ethnic_groups_and_immigration

So I asked if the ‘senior hour’ will start at 06:00 on the chosen mornings next week….

“Oh no” was the reply “they’ll be from 09:00 to 10:00. We’ll just be open at 06:00 as normal before that….”

The empty shelves in the supermarket prompted me to visit a local Indian shop, which is a treasure trove of Indian cuisine.
At the checkout were two young Indian looking people wearing masks. My bill was £6.04 and I had a tenner but offered some extra loose change as well to round it up. The checkout boy looked very perplexed and 3 minutes went by while they worked out what to do with my offer.
It turned out neither of them spoke any English at all.
Weird thing is that having recently visited India, I can attest that English is widely understood and, for example, bilingual shop signage is common.
So……..who are they and what are they doing in our country? More contemporarily, how will they know what Coronavirus-related action they need to take?

I didn’t stick around to listen. Off switch hit. I have every sympathy for someone in a difficult situation and would try to help if they were known to me, in range and in genuine need.

But Jonny missed two essential questions that the BBC and we needed to be asked on air. “Where was the woman’s husband/partner?” and “Why is he not helping you and his children.” For all we listeners knew, there could be a second wage earner in the household.

Very defective, Jonny. The BBC needs to ‘up its game’ or it will be ‘game over’ for it very soon.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that the flu, as well as flu-related complications, was responsible for 80,000 U.S. deaths last winter. That’s the highest flu-related death toll in the U.S. four decades, according to the Associated Press.

To compare with other years in the history of having the flu shot, the flu typically kills about 12,000 Americans in a mild year. In severe years, the flu season death toll has spiked to around 56,000. The 2017 flu vaccine turned out to not be very effective, which is one reason for the sudden increase in flu-related deaths.”

I look out the window, the curve doesn’t look flatter to me, to me

    mama, just killed a man
i didn’t stay inside in bed
I walked by him, now he’s dead
mama, life was so much fun
but now I’ve caught this unforgiving plague

    mama, oooooh
didn’t mean to make them die
if I’m not back to work this time tomorrow
carry on, carry on as if people didn’t matter

oo late, my time has come
    sends shivers down my spine
    body’s aching all the time
goodbye everybody, I’ve got the flu
gotta leave you all behind and face the truth

    mama, oooooh
    I don’t wanna die
I sometimes wish I never went out at all

I see a little silhouette of a man
what a douche, what a douche
did he even wash his hands though
    security is tightening
    very very frightening me
Gotta lay low (gotta lay low)
Gotta lay low (gotta lay low)
    Gotta lay low masturbate
    Masturbate O O O O

I’m just a poor boy, facing mortality
HE’S JUST A POOR BOY FACING MORTALITY
spare him his life from this monstrosity

Touch your face, wash your hands, will you wash your hands?
BISMILLAH NO WE WILL NOT WASH OUR HANDS! (WASH YOUR HANDS!)
BISMILLAH NO WE WILL NOT WASH OUR HANDS! (WASH YOUR HANDS)

BISMILLAH WE WILL NOT WASH YOUR HANDS! (WASH YOUR HANDS!)
WASH YOUR HANDS! (never, never, never wash your hands oh oh oh oh oh oh oh)
    No no no no no
Oh mama mia, mia (mama mia wash your hands!)
COVID-19 has a sickness put aside for me, for me

So you think you can stop me and just shake my hand?
So you think we can hang out and not break our plans?
Oh baby, can’t do this with me, baby,
Just gotta stay home, just gotta stay home with my fever

    oooooh

    Curving can get flatter
    Anyone can see
    Curving can get flatter
Curving can get flatter, you’ll see

    Just look out your windows….

      Are no memories sacred ?

I fear another outbreak of luvvies making one of those records – one stage up from the horror of Gal Godot.

Or maybe even worse – now that super journos like peston and Robinson are in their bunkers – they might come up with a charidee tune – headlined of course by the Maitliss and piers Morgan cheerleading to the tune of ‘we re all doomed ‘ ….

BBC give a little plug for M&S: “Coronavirus: M&S invokes wartime spirit as virus impact hits”.
Based on their recent advertising, presumably M&S are referring to the Zulu Wars. And from the Zulu perspective.

From the UK’s chief scientific advisor:
And that the best estimate of the “infection fatality rate” (the proportion of people who die after being infected) is in the range of 0.5% to 1%.
So not much worse then than a bad winter for flu, which in 2017/18 managed to polish off over 25,000 people and without a single plane being grounded, school closed or economy crashed. Or anyone really caring that much.

The ‘scientists’ are saying now that the lockdown will go on for a year – which would be just in time for the second wave.

Somebody somewhere is going to have to ‘wise up’ because such a scenario will not be tenable from any point of view

“The report reads: ‘It was agreed that the addition of both general social distancing and school closures to case isolation, household isolation and social distancing of vulnerable groups would be likely to control the epidemic when kept in place for a long period”
