I was listening to R4 news the other day and the “Worlds favourite broadcaster” seemed to lead with panic buying stories.
So much of the problem appears to be is due to hyperbole and exaggeration – Part of me wonders whether the BBC is actually enjoying this “man made “crisis” and in a sense wants to keep it going to raise its profile.
Wimmins hour yesterday had the virtuous Jane Garvey going on about visiting the food bank with stuff. Lets hope Jenny Murray doesnt get wind of this, cos the bag of food items might not make it.

I dont watch or listen to ‘news’ now. I watch Boris broadcasts at 5pm then turn over to anything but news or propaganda and I feel much better for it. There is no other news they can broadcast so they just keep regurgitating the same old scare stories to keep their journalists in jobs.

Not exactly correct. One of my daughters in law is a teacher. The teachers are falling sick or self isolating for various reasons. No teachers no school. She expects her school to close because of this. Facts not campaigning.
DaveS, what we do not know from the BBC article is whether those teachers are falling sick to the common cold, influenza, Covid-19 or anything else for that matter.
A thoughtful, careful, honest BBC journalist would have asked some penetrating questions to get at the truth.

Last night saw the startled Mayor being interviewed on 10pm BBC news. He said he wants to run a weekend service. I had hoped that a quieter underground meant people could stand further apart and reduce the spread. He wasn’t asked why he was cutting the service and concentrating passengers.

There are many ways in which the pandemic may have long term effects on society and it passes the time to imagine what they might be. The virus is destabilising society and rapid change in attitudes may result.
One possible outcome is that the under 40 generations , who have lived in a time of great relative prosperity, suddenly are shocked into the realisation that their affluence and well being isn’t a given and that it can be taken from them by events. Perhaps this will wake them up to the fact that their comfortable way of life in this country and the West in general isn’t a given and is much more fragile than perhaps they thought and needs to be protected by them. They may already think that about the supposed threat of climate change but will this realisation spread to opposing other threats like open borders, mass migration or Islamisation? Will they realise that their own lives can be threatened by changes such as those?
Totally agree Double, – those pouty selfies and bare torsos never seemed so inappropriate as they do now. Perhaps this is the sharp shock that will make the last 2 generations need to grow up and mature !

The question for constituents in Birmingham Yardley (a previously affluent area of Birmingham) must be “Has voting for a Labour MP served this constituency well?” and “Would we be doing better if we elected an representative from a different political Party?”
Most MPs in Yardley can’t afford a £50 printer!

We were told last year via the BBC that there would be shortages of food and drink and pharmaceuticals if we left the EU without a deal. It was a complete lie.The BBC told us that. Various people were brought onto the BBC N&CA programmes to tell us that. Some MPs used Radio 4 to to tell us that. They were lying. It has taken the Covid-19 pandemic to reveal the truth.
How do I know? The spokesman from the supermarket when asked about empty shelves this morning said “There are plenty of stocks in the supply chain.”

The great pity is that the lie you skilfully expose , along with all the others that the BBC tell on a daily basis, will never come to the notice of 90% of the population because there is no right of centre broadcaster to expose them. Dt, I think the public probably knew by instinct that they were being lied to by Remainers and Remoaners over a No Deal Brexit, not least because for decades the BBC and others in the MSM have been commenting every year on the appearance of certain stocks in supermarkets at different points in the year. I think that the BBC is beyond reform and that short of sacking most of the staff it is impossible to force it to become politically neutral. Therefore the only available practicable solution is to make it a subscription only service so that those who don’t wish to be indoctrinated can opt out from paying for it. I think that even if this were to happen there is every danger that a future non conservative government could pay for it out of general taxation and it would again rise Phoenix like from the ashes.My own preferred , but definitely right wing , preference is one of abolition followed by obliteration so that the foul corporation can never be reassembled again.

I know exactly what the hysterical arguments from the Fascist left will be about sentencing people to death etc, but the flip side of this is that up to 10 million people will be unemployed and condemned to a life of poverty. The country will be much poorer and social security pensions benefits etc will fail and we risk returning to a life similar to the Victorians when poverty really was poverty.
Perhaps if the rats in government had kept their promise to ladies now in their sixties about pensionable age ( WASPIs) there would be many more elderly individuals and families who would be capable of looking after themselves.

Yesterday saw the biggest jump in UK confirmed cases of Covid-19 infection. The most important news that the BBC could convey today would be the latest increase and the running total of known infections. The BBC has not brought that important news to me in the 8a.m. main News broadcast on Radio 4.
The BBC are no longer a provider of serious News and Current Affairs. They are mere gossips, political activists and naysayers. They are failing in their Charter requirements. All they produce is tittle tattle and an ever lengthening queue of begging bowls for ‘government’, in truth begging money from the taxpayer.
The 9am bulletin had, in this order:
* Chancellor’s economic measures
* Professor Neil Ferguson infected
* Supermarkets opening for the elderly/disabled
* A new born is one of 3 new infections in a Norfolk hospital (mentions 70 people who had tested positive in the UK have now died)
* Trials due to take more than 3 days are postponed.
*Asian stock markets.

The most important News item for the BBC should be number of new confirmed Covid-19 cases, followed by number of deaths and whether in the deceased case there was an underlying health condition or conditions.

I used to be offered an MoT at the Docs every other year after age 60, but they seemed to have dropped that last year.
I always accepted that MoT offer, as it coincided with my ‘Safe to Visit the GP’ season of April to August.

Okay, so I was only venturing to Hampton Court Gardens, but these days you can’t be too careful.
We few intrepid travelers smiled at each other on the almost deserted platform at Clapham Junction. I’m sure we felt like The Dambusters.
I stood there stoical and brave and rather wished I owned a pipe so that I could clench it manfully between my teeth. Alas…
Suffice to say Hampton Court Gardens were stunning, I took over two hundred photographs and I seem to have survived the experience, hairy though it was at times.
Okay, so perhaps I don’t deserve to be ranked alongside those heroic Brit’s of old, Scott, Shackleton, Mallory and Burton, but…
And today, reckless fool that I am, I’m venturing out to Kew Gardens.

We are shortly going to be in a situation where every business in the country is in considerable debt to the government.
Effectively the proprietorship of Business will have moved from Private to Public hands within the course of 6 months as a consequence of the Virus.
If government can create money to lend to businesses, then they can create money to give to businesses. I have not gone in for the New World Order Conspiracy Theories in the past but it appears to me now that I am wrong.

I had to laugh last night. I was watching talking pictures and an advert came on for Just Men beard dye. What with grecian 2000 the sales must be quite healthy. What do they say every cloud has a silver lining. Ha
I must be missing something.
Instead of economic armageddon for months, destroying savings, businesses, livelihoods, plans for the future, plus social isolation, all with an uncertain impact on Coronavirus spread, and all potentially only delaying rather than avoiding individual illness, why don’t we just carry on normally and if we get it, we get it?
The young and fit will get through, and then have immunity which can be used to provide service to those who are going through the illness. Granted a certain number of people, often economically unproductive, might not survive but many may not under the current policy anyway.
Am I being heartless? Well maybe. But consider this. NICE used to put a price on drugs versus lifespan. From memory they would sanction a spend of £30k p.a. on, say, a trial cancer drug, if it would enable the sufferer to live an extra year. So calculations of life expectancy versus state costs are nothing new. They are the norm and have been for years in the NHS. Proof? The high profile media stories where someone has to raise funds to go abroad for treatment.
So in effect what we are doing is advocating economic and social meltdown for many weeks at a cost of maybe £300 bn in order to keep a number of mainly elderly and other vulnerable people living for a few more years.
Right or wrong, that’s where we are.
