I wonder how the BBC inquiry into a former employee called Russel Brand is going ? Will it be fully published ? Or the usual commercial secrecy / data protection stuff be used to prevent those still paying for the BBC from knowing the truth ?

Mayor of Manchester, Andy Burnham, threatens to sue the Government over the cancellation of HS2. What he will sue for I have no idea. He demonstrates his stupidity and left wing Metropolitan roots by arguing cancellation is a disaster for the North. HS2 might be useful if you want to go to London which will suit s few travellers but it will have very limited use for most.
Does Burnham not realise that HS2 concentrates power into London, it’s more like levelling down. What the North needs is more roads. Anyone travelled on the M6, M60, M62 recently? The congestion is terrible

Quite right. It is about already wealthy people having access to cheaper properties in Warwickshire, Lancashire and Cheshire. It should have been built as a 125 speed line, with intervening stations and able to carry freight. Or even better, a new line with terminii at all of the UK’s seaports.

Nick Robinson blames ‘news avoiders’ for Today programme’s ratings slump
    26 September 2023 • 7:00am
    https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2023/09/26/nick-robinson-bbc-radio-4-today-programme-ratings-slump/

    QUOTE

Nick Robinson has blamed the Today programme’s falling ratings on “news avoiders” who no longer want to face the world’s problems.

BBC Radio 4’s flagship news and current affairs show has lost more than a million listeners over the course of the past year.

But Robinson and Amol Rajan, his co-presenter, insisted that the slump was down to a general decline rather than dissatisfaction with Today in particular.

“People just want to avoid the news,” Robinson told Radio Times.

“Market research literally calls them ‘news avoiders’. We will all know people who think ‘I just can’t face the world any more’.”

Rajan pointed to a recent Reuters Institute report that showed a “precipitous drop” in interest.

However, while the Today programme’s audience fell in the first quarter of the year to its lowest audience since 1999 – 5.76 million listeners – ratings for rivals GB News Radio and Times Radio rose over the same period.

Today programme ‘has lost its mojo’
The Reuters report to which Rajan referred, which surveyed people in a range of countries, found that some are turning away from coverage of the war in Ukraine, politics and climate change.

It suggested that “less sensationalist, less negative, and more explanatory approaches” might help to tempt back listeners.

BBC insiders have suggested that the Today programme’s problems run deeper than a general malaise.

“Today has been cut to the bone as part of all the cost-cutting in News, and it no longer has the editorial independence it once had because so many things are centrally commissioned. That shows,” said one former Today employee.

“And the programme has lost its mojo. When was the last time you were gripped by an interview with a member of the Cabinet?

“Mind you, that might be due to the calibre of the Cabinet ministers.”

Robinson and Rajan are now launching The Today Podcast, a spin-off that they hope will bring in a wider audience.

‌Billed as “the Today programme – unbuttoned”, it will have a more relaxed tone than the main show.

Robinson explained: “Tone is important. Being friendly, not being overly aggressive for the sake of it. It’s optimism, hope, as well as scepticism and scrutiny.

“It’s recognising that people are listening in this incredible, more intimate way. So that you don’t want to just be like: ‘Oh, shut up. Stop shouting at each other.’”

One of the most popular current affairs podcasts is The News Agents, hosted by ex-BBC presenters Emily Maitlis and Jon Sopel.

Another is The Rest Is Politics, with Alastair Campbell and Rory Stewart.

Robinson suggested that both podcasts follow the same template: “Basically, ‘we listened to the Today programme this morning, and this is what we think about it’.”

Rajan said of The Rest Is Politics: “A lot of people I know listen to that and really like having their own worldview reinforced to them.” Robinson added: “We’re not centrist dads.”

‌According to Robinson, the influence of podcasts has led to Today interviews “loosening up”.

Rajan said the programme now better reflects the country because it has a range of accents, rather than all the presenters speaking in Received Pronunciation.

Both rejected rumours that the Today presenting team do not get along with one another.

“We’re very different, but you could smell it a mile off if people didn’t get on,” said Robinson.

‌Rajan said: “I’m full of unashamed love for Today. I’m also full of love for the BBC.

“I read the absolute filth and nonsense that’s written about it, devoid of understanding and context and nuance and all the rest of it, but I actually think there’s a lot to be grateful for.”

Fed, it is the lack of balance and Comrade Robinson’s and Comrade JustRemainIn Webb’s and Comrade Mishal Husain’s willingness to break the first rule of radio broadcasting and talk over their interviewees that’s puts people off listening. They need to remember that many or even most of their main audience in the 50 to 70 years of age group all have damaged hearing thanks to pop music. My hearing is intact but I find Comrade Robinson’s interruptions preceeded by or followed by “Forgive me …. ” extremely annoying and it puts me off listening beyond the first half hour.

New boy on business, Will Baines, did not interrupt or talk over his contributors. Neither did the new girl on business, Vivian Nuness, do that yesterday. Felicity Hanna doesn’t do it either.

Another day, another institution to reset:

“British boxing governing body accused of racism, sexism and Islamophobia.” Ch4’s turn to take up the mantle of bringing down the country, sorry — addressing institutional discrimination — as the claims come from two black former referees and a female boxer.

There have only been two black refs for the BBBOFC, so that’s a 100% grievance record — very impressive numbers. The boxer is Ruqsana Begum from Bethnal Green. She reports feeling “attacked and violated” because a ref told her leggings were against the rules. She was still allowed to fight in them, but no matter: some white men somewhere must be made to pay.

Post-BLM resentment, Ch4 activists and another east London Begum (via Bangladesh) who doesn’t seem to like this country much. It all makes for a heady brew and one only wonders where we’ll be in 5 years with this level of destabilisation going on.

(I hope Cindy’s available for another inquiry.)

      ….

Today the BBC journalists Michael Keohan and Colin Campbell released a shocking report on the channel crossings. It showed people smugglers selling their wares brazenly in the migrant camps and many children living in unsafe and dangerous conditions, as well as—this is breathtaking—a free French public bus service that migrants can use to travel directly from the camps to the Dunkirk departure beaches. Will my right hon. Friend allow a statement on the issue of tackling the small boat crossings and the Government’s response in their work with France?

Not BBC but a further NHS update. One that will not feature on the BBC I suspect.

A friend had a dodgy mole and the GP et al. decided to excise it.

He managed to get an appointment at the local hospital and it took place last Saturday morning.

On arrival there were two people at reception with not much to do.
He was booked in. Two other people came along and took him away to answer a few questions and have his weight and height checked. (Why???).

He was then taken by two other people, one a porter, , in a wheelchair, to the operating room. When he pointed out that he could walk, he was told this was not the done thing.

In the operating room, there was a doctor and two nurses. The small operation was carried out under a local anaesthetic.

At the end of the operation, one of the nurses said in terms, ‘there is only one more patient, can we go home after that’. It was by now noon but transpired their shift ran to 6 pm.

I may have missed someone out but my friend reckoned he was seen by about 10 different people when a maximum of two or three in any other setting would have easily sufficed.

I mention this in case readers have the impression that the NHS is drastically understaffed and underfunded.

Interesting … “I live in Telford, in the West Midlands administrative region. To get to London we catch a diesel train (no electrified lines) to Birmingham New Street and change to another train to get to London. To get a HS2 train to London we would have to walk, get a taxi or jump on a bus or tram to get to Curzon Street. Even if the timetables were perfectly aligned the transfer time would wipe out any time saving from the faster train and would make the end to end journey from Telford (or anywhere else going through New Street) to London using HS2 longer than it currently does on existing rail infrastructure. The only people who will see a net benefit in time are those whose journeys start and end in the vicinity of the two stations.”

Davey says voting Conservative is ‘bad for your health’

Davey goes on to criticise the government, saying its 10-year cancer plan announced last year has been “junked”.

    Opposing Brexit gets the applause

‘We need to fix our broken relationship with Europe’

‘Some activists would love to talk so much more about Brexit – and their conviction it was a terrible mistake.’

‘I have never known UK so badly governed – Davey’

‘Clowns didn’t do it. The Conservatives did’

‘Brexit – the elephant in the conference hall?’

‘Upbeat mood as Lib Dems feel they’ve got mojo back’

‘Why the Lib Dems might be more important than you think’

And at the very start just to sway you into liking Ed Davey before you get spoon fed his rhetoric:

‘Five fun facts about Lib Dem leader’

    Featuring:

‘In 1994, he received awards from the Royal Humane Society and the Chief Constable of the British Transport Police after rescuing a woman from the path of an oncoming train at Clapham Junction’

‘Davey is a Notts County FC supporter and a big mushy pea fan’

‘He told Metro that if a bust of him was to be made, he would like recycled tyres to be used’

    Barf.

What a ridiculous lovefest. Let’s see what the headlines are when it’s the Tories turn.

The video is the first time I’ve seen Ed Davey speaking. Underwhelming to say the least. A sure sign of a weak person is when they try to raise themselves by lowering others.

Bring back Jo Swinson and her travelling circus. She was amusingly ridiculous.

.. “Yes we have, 600 non compliants , so we’ll spend heaps of taxpayers money hiring ones tat are ompliant”

Glasgow City Council has spent almost £100,000 to HIRE vehicles to replace parts of its fleet that do not comply with its low-emission zone (LEZ).
    And they fined…themselves… over breaches.
More than 600 of its own vehicles are no longer allowed inside the LEZ.

Every other minute, someone in the world drowns. These are wasted lives. Preventable deaths.

Drowning is a silent epidemic that claims an estimated 235,000 lives every year, many of them children. But this leading killer isn’t getting the global attention it deserves.

The RNLI is working with global leaders, public health organisations and at-risk communities to help turn the tide. We want to make drowning prevention a priority worldwide and reduce this staggering loss of life.

By raising awareness, conducting research and testing interventions, we can make a difference together.

Polly Toynbee of the Guardian is a habitual user of dodgy anti-Tory smears but the latest takes some beating.

She argues that VoterID is more or less an unfair Tory trick.

    https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2023/sep/26/tories-electoral-system-millions-of-voters

Anyone with half a brain would realise that voting for a government is one of the most important powers given to citizens to have their say on how the country is managed and therefore must be beyond reproach.

It’s not particularly difficult or odious and if any individual can’t be arsed to get a voter ID to prove who they are and that they have the right to vote, they probably don’t really deserve a vote anyway.

We all know that certain communities tend to have let’s say unusual voting methods, either being unable to prove who they are through lack of personal traceability or indulging in mass voting carried out by some overseer to ensure they vote the right, or should I say left way.

So people like Toynbee are not concerned with illegal voting they just want it to be made as easy as possible for as many people as possible, regardless of their authenticity to vote Left.

Put simply, they will accept any level of voter fraud to get their desired political outcome.

I don’t see any way that anyone could find issues with voterID, Its the best way to winkle out fraud and deceit and multiple voting by the same individual.

As an example what if it were possible to roll up at any bank, give a false name and withdraw money from that account with no ID?

    Its the same argument.

Multiculturalism has failed, says Braverman in refugee speech

‘Multiculturalism has failed, she said and “you can see it play out on the streets of cities all over Europe. From Malmo, to Paris, Brussels, to Leicester”‘

Well, it’s taken long enough for somebody to admit it.

Two things I am certain of:

    1. The majority of British people will agree with her.

    2. She is going to get a massive backlash of hate from the far-Left and the BBC. She will be every dirty label they can think of. Let’s see how long it is before the BBC write something calling her a racist.

No doubt she will get the daily headline attack trick to pressure her to resign. Maybe the Tories will stand up to the BBC this time as we are entering the election madness phase and they know they have to do something to get some respect back from the silent majority.

      Totally agree.
But I still argue that the leftists use the immigration issue only as a tactic not because they particularly have an axe to grind about it.

Destabilising western society and the market economy. That is the strategy. Unfettered open door mass immigration is just one of their tactics.

Getting western economies to collapse is their strategy, and replacing them with Marxist-socialist states, centrally-controlled, is their overall objective.

‘You are entitled to have that conversation’ she says to the caller who has been cut off.

Her clearly intolerant, slightly spiteful and patronising attitude together with her general appearance and demeanour are absolutely stereotypical of your left-wing activist.

She blames the reason for all the hotels on the government and their ‘indequate system’ without any mention of the sheer numbers of these people arriving. There will be 56,000 illegals this year just from the small boats which means 220 cases would need to be completed every single working day to keep up – never mind the bulk of people seeking asylum through legal channels.

We will never know what Mervyn might have replied : she cut him off so he could not counter anything she said – yet she was very quick to interrupt him at the start.

It will come as no surprise to know a large part of her career was spent at the BBC.

Isn’t it a sobering thought, that this time next year, the BBC will be full-on screaming at anyone who is a normal citizen, and votes for any conservative values as the General Election looms.

Ofcom will do bugger all as usual, The dreadful Robinson, (once a Tory), will be yelling and interrupting everyone he dislikes, LBC will melt down with Maitlis, Sopel and for some odd reason only known to themselves, a bloke called Lammy, and the whole shooting match will be a love fest for Starmer, Growler and Abbott, with several unknowns chucked in to make the balance worse!

Seeing the Beeboid dribbling hatred of Ms Braverman’s interesting approach to illegals, they’ve marked their cards far too early, but there again, when did they ever get the timing right!

Still, this time next year, we can all do our bit here I suppose…

        [From GB News online]

        “… … …

BBC ratings have plummeted because audiences are sick of “woke lectures” from the broadcaster, one former politician has suggested.

It comes as one BBC presenter blames the falling ratings on “news avoiders” who no longer want to face the world’s problems.

Former Brexit Party MEP Rupert Lowe shared his thoughts on social media after Nick Robinson claimed the decline in numbers is not down to listener dissatisfaction, but insiders suggest the Today programme has “lost its mojo”.

“‘News avoiders’ now being blamed for BBC’s plummeting popularity,” Lowe wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.

“Nothing to do with people being sick of the woke lectures, of course!”

Over the past year, BBC Radio 4’s flagship news and current affairs show has lost more than a million listeners.”

Note the term “news avoiders” – it will be “DENIERS” next!
