In 2024, the government provided £6 million in match funding for Red Nose Day international work.

Similar match funding occurred in previous years (e.g., £6m in 2023, £10m pledges in earlier campaigns like 2011–2015).

According to Charity Commission report last week 26% of UK “charity” funding comes from government – and they wouldn’t favour ideologically correct recipients – would they?

How is it that slave-owners were paid compensation from our taxes, yet the enslaved and their families were not?

Beginning with these simple but startling questions, Lenny Henry and Marcus Ryder explore the burning issue of how best can we resolve the inequality resulting from 400 years of the enslavement of African people and the ongoing racism still suffered by millions across the world.

p.s. Islam and African slave traders are exempt from payments

Comrade Lisa Nandy – chosen to be ‘culture Secretary’ for her solid thickness … a friend of the Marxist BBC –

From the DT STARTS Voters are to lose control over the future of the BBC after Lisa Nandy confirmed that a 10-year limit on the broadcaster’s Charter will be scrapped.

The Culture Secretary described the current system, under which the BBC’s Royal Charter expires every decade and has to be negotiated with the government of the day, as “bizarre”.

Speaking at the Society of Editors conference in London, she said: “For far too long we have ducked the big questions around the future of the BBC, whether it comes to the length of the Charter or to how you sustainably fund the BBC.

“We can’t continue to duck those big and essential questions and so this Charter will be the last of its kind.

“We believe that while you would never accept a situation in which the NHS was under threat of no longer existing every decade, we should not accept that for the BBC either.”

It signals a major victory for the BBC, which is lobbying to secure its future ahead of the end of the current Charter period at the end of next year.

    ‘Political football’
Tim Davie, the outgoing BBC director general, has said the renewal cycle leaves the broadcaster open to becoming a “political football”.

Replacing the current 10-year system with a permanent Charter was one of the key proposals put forward by the corporation to government in a consultation this month.

The demand has widely been seen as a way of safeguarding the BBC’s future in the event of a Reform government. Nigel Farage, the party leader, has said he would change the law to strip the broadcaster of its licence fee funding.

Ms Nandy likened the BBC to the NHS, saying: “If the NHS is essential to the health of our people the BBC is essential to the health of our democracy.”

She added: “We will act to future-proof this vital institution in these stormy times when public debate feels more toxic and polarised than ever and too often the BBC becomes a lightning rod for the ongoing, exhausting culture wars.”

The comparison with the NHS may prove an uncomfortable one. Public satisfaction with the health service has fallen to a record low and there are mounting questions about its cost.

The Culture Secretary insisted that Labour would strengthen accountability of BBC bosses to licence fee payers, insisting there would be a “much clearer expectation that licence fee payers will be able to see how their money is spent”.

    Reform of licence fee
Ms Nandy’s comments were welcomed in New Broadcasting House on Tuesday night, but insiders were also clear that negotiations on the new Charter were at an early stage.

Labour will still be tasked with making key decisions on the future of the BBC’s funding, with advertising and subscriptions among potential options under consideration.

The public service broadcaster has acknowledged that reform to the licence fee is needed. The cost is set to rise to £180 per year from next month.

However, the BBC has pushed back against the idea of introducing adverts or adopting a Netflix-style subscription model.

Bosses have suggested they would support replacing the licence fee with a tax, arguing that more people should pay less to fund the BBC. Ms Nandy has previously ruled out funding the broadcaster through taxation.

The BBC also wants to end the process of political appointees to its board following controversy over the presence of Sir Robbie Gibb, a former Downing Street director of communications for Theresa May, as a non-executive director.

Ms Nandy’s concession on the Charter marks a turnaround in fortunes for the BBC, which has long operated against a hostile political background.

The public service broadcaster has been hobbled by successive freezes to the licence fee by Conservative governments, as well as decisions to shift responsibility for funding free licences for the over-75s and the World Service to the corporation.

At the same time, the BBC has been grappling with a decline in viewer numbers as audiences flock to streaming rivals, while fewer households are choosing to pay the levy.

Overall, the BBC’s licence fee income has dropped by almost a quarter – or £1.2bn – in real terms since the start of the current Charter period in 2016.ENDS

Since we’re never going to be rid of the traitorous pile of shit, I’d favour funding it out of general taxation. At least that way people can watch whatever tf they want without the threat of going to jail. The optimum solution would be to burn the whole edifice to the ground.

I don’t think it’s morally right that a cadre of left-wing politicians should be able to change the BBC charter situation to their own benefit without widespread National agreement. At very least I think it should warrant a national referendum by the people who use and have to pay for it.

I find many of our politicians despicable. The likes of Labour MPs, such as Stella Creasey and Tonia Antoniazzi, also voted against the rape gang enquiry. They’re supposed to be arch feminists…
However, not surprisingly, they’re also against the death sentence for murder.

According to these people, killing the likes of mass murderers such as Peter Sutcliffe or Ian Brady would be deeply immoral…but they have no such qualms about destroying an entirely innocent unborn baby that has never hurt anyone.

Just a small observation, before I start to watch ‘Our friends from The North’, which was shown well before the bBC, (who commissioned the series), became such a dire, left-wing and poor ‘service’, but chums might like to know that I discovered a whole set of drawings of the redevelopment of Croydon East Station, back in 1975, when I started work as a minion in a construction business in London. They were drawn up by Poulson’s firm…!

    In pooch news today…

The left-leaning poundshop (plus 10% inflation) junior Guardian that is the i paper gives a home to an old BBC pet: Chris Packham’s most searing interview yet – we already know he’s a bit of a climate zealot: ‘Humanity has reached its limit’ Even my dogs now eat plant-based diet (i paper)

I’m guessing miniature poodles Sid and Nancy had little choice in the matter. For me, our Chris’s green politics are Pretty Vacant and would cause nothing but Anarchy in the UK (There’s one for the teenagers)

From green loony to Luna… Meanwhile, in the formerly serious Times: Hands off my cockapoo! Caitlin Moran (and Luna)

Our serious-minded environmentally campaigning BBC may have pensioned off the late lamented Johnny Morris for his humorous zoological ventriloquistic antics – yet anthropomorphism abounds in the popular imagination: Stanley the dogtective… WAGatha Christie… Pooch solves 160-year-old mystery… Stanley the Labrador dug up an ancient poison bottle (Daily Star)

Anyway, moving on. I don’t want Stew Green putting me in the doghouse again for reporting too much of this sort of frippery.

    In screw the pooch news

Rumour has it that we spent millions on a ‘pandemic’ after action report officially termed the UK Covid-19 Inquiry.

An independent public inquiry established to examine the UK’s response to and impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, and to learn lessons for the future. The Inquiry has finished its public hearings and is regularly publishing reports containing findings and recommendations.

Although diplomatically steering well clear of the actual origin and cause of the outbreak, a remit so wide and amorphous that we pays our money and takes our pick, as that old saying goes…

Kudos the mildly conservative Telegraph was fairly early on a brave lone voice of skepticism in the face of officialdom: Protect NHS message ‘may have cost lives’

The non-in-person left-leaning virtual Indy takes that line and excusing all the ‘health experts’ directs it back at the Tory PM: Boris Johnson’s ‘stay at home’ Covid messages stopped thousands getting lifesaving treatment (Independent)

Our BBC seem scarcely interested anymore – way down the list of news reports online we find: Stay at home advice questioned and rules too tough – key findings from Covid report (BBC)

The ‘sooner, harder, longer’ Starmer is now PM, the argument is now moot and there are pastures and pandemics anew: Family of teen who died in meningitis outbreak call for wider MenB vaccine programme (Yang Tian, BBC)

In-the-tank for Labour Daily Mirror worships at the altar of the NHS: Covid Inquiry: the verdict… Heroic health workers put own lives at risk to prevent system collapse – yep, some of those TikTok dance routines can be pretty taxing – especially when you’re carrying a few extra stones.

They saved us and NHS – screams the Mirror – where their saucepans must be pretty battered and dented what with all that banging.

Tories’ underfunding & disasterous messaging at centre of the tragedy (Mirror)

Methinks that was always going to be the main conclusion dawn from any inquiry findings. Baroness Hallet could have been saved the trouble and us the millions.

Although it barely commands a minor headline way down the ‘in other news’ Briefing column in the FT the semi-official line reads: Covid inquiry reports… has found that “ill-prepared” health service “came close to collapse” and made health workers “put their lives at risk” – fancy that, much to their surprise and dismay, our medics had to deal with sick people.

It’s far from a top headline but at least the Telegraph reports our Baroness Hallet concedes: …pandemic may have cost thousands of lives by making people think the health service was closed… mistake to pause screening programmes for cancer

Hannity lambasts the US legacy media, but the same applies to the BBC. (Hopefully, after he’s won the war, Trump will turn his attention to the treacherous media and hang a few journalists from lampposts, starting with BBC correspondents.)

The Left is rooting against America.

“There is an unfortunate subplot to the conflict in Iran. Apparently, Trump derangement syndrome is so bad on the left that the legacy media mob, Democrats, other so-called liberals, they are rooting for America to lose. These lunatics who constantly drape themselves in virtue are now rooting for a regime in Iran that murders protesters, throws gay people off of tall buildings, and tortures women to death if their hair is not completely covered in public and for other reasons. Don’t take my word for it. You know, after it took just two weeks to completely destroy Iran’s navy, air force, air defences and degrade its missiles and drones by 90%.

Well, here’s how the media mob spun it over at ABC. “Even as Iran has been pummelled by Israeli at American air strikes uh with its military capabilities greatly diminished, Tehran continues to demonstrate resolve both in adapting and expanding its military tactics. Could they tell us who might be in charge of that?

And here’s Time magazine. Quote, Trump may radicalize regime rather than topple it. According to the experts, most of the radicals are now dead. Fake news, CNN, quote, Seven reasons why Trump hasn’t won the Iran war. It barely started. And I don’t even know if you’ll call it a war, but a massacre.

And of course, the New York Times, who didn’t seem to notice the historically high gas prices under Joe Biden, even getting as high as $5 a gallon, are now in panic mode. Quote, “Oil shock sends tremors through world economy.” This really is the big one.

And look at this headline. The United Nations has already declared that Iran’s nuclear program will live on in perpetuity. It’s been three weeks…”
