When the gas turbines fail or underperform, the auxiliary diesel generators can become overloaded, leading to total power blackouts and loss of propulsion — leaving the ship “dead in the water” with no electricity. This was especially problematic in hot/humid environments (e.g., Gulf waters reaching ~30–32°C or higher), where the cooling system simply couldn’t keep up.
