“Perhaps you may not appreciate, being British, and well…rather thought of as having a kind of oblivious sense of women’s fashion.”

Mate, we might not be in the Italian league when it comes to style but NOBODY dresses as badly as the American tourists that we’re delighted to welcome to London. Not even the Germans.

Grant – your prediction that Putin will eat Obama for breakfast is about to be tested with the news that Russia is about to site nuclear missiles near to the Polish border in response to the US missile shield programme.

The timing of this announcement is no mere coincidence – it is yet another example of why Russia habitually provides the world with its most illustrious chess players. This is an opening gambit in a game which they feel is eminently winnable.

Not sure what Obama’s game is, but it is probably not chess, and it is equally unlikely to be the poker which Ronald Reagan so successfully deployed when he bluffed the USSR into pursuing the unlikely Star Wars programme.

Time to get out the brown sauce ?

Yes, quite agree. I follow Russian stunts closely, partly because I have worked in Ukraine and fear for that country.
Putin is clever and ruthless and acts in the interests of his country as he sees it. How I wish he was Prime Minister of Britain ( maybe he will be one day).
However, I fear that Obama and the new administration really do not understand the mentality of the enemies of the West. They really do believe that dialogue and appeasement will work. They have a big shock coming to them.

Listen Mr Lloyd,I don’t like cats, therefore I do not trawl the internet looking for cat lover’s sites to submit anti-cat comments.Your sole purpose in accessing this site is to place counter arguments against all and sundry……because you get paid by the bbc to do so.

Conan – It was said in jest, and in response to a few personal points made about me and why I say what I say. So not an argument.

I think you’ll find that the BBC have placed the block on it’s employees from using this site. Didn’t you get the memo, moron?

    Mikewhineliberal:
You should have a word with Mike Lloyd. I’m not sure if he would like being associated with a ’40 something middle class middle of the road nobody’ either.

There is nothing wrong with a trade deficit. Similarly, trade surpluses are vastly overrated.

“According to data he found at the National Bureau of Economic Research’s “Macrohistory Database”, it turns out that the U.S. ran a trade surplus in nine of the 10 years of the Great Depression, with 1936 being the lone exception.

During those 10 years, we had a significant trade surplus, with exports totaling $26.05 billion and imports totaling only $21.13 billion. So what do trade surpluses during a depression and trade deficits during an economic boom prove, considering we’ve had trade deficits for most of our history? Professor Boudreaux says they prove absolutely nothing. Economies are far too complex to draw simplistic causal connections between trade deficits and surpluses and economic welfare and growth. “
