HEAVENS ABOVE.

I see the BBC report on the Church of England’s decision to stop clergy from being members of the BNP provides an entirely one-sided analysis of the issue. To be clear; I have NO time whatsover for the BNP but I do accept they are a lawful political party. This clear discrimination against them does not meet with the approval of all Anglicans and it would have been nice for the BBC to provide space for those who take issue with this decision. Some people might equally think that a government which has abandoned our national borders, engaged in reckless economic policies, failed in its duty to our armed forces and prostrated itself to Islam is JUST as morally repugnant as the BNP. But the BBC would never consider that possibility or give space to those who might think it. The BNP is the great pariah party for the established political left and so when a decision like this is taken by the General Synod it is celebrated by the BBC.

I would have thought any attempt to specifically disbar BNP members from becoming clergy would fall foul of discrimination and human rights laws.

If the CofE wants to be apolitical, that’s its business, but I wouldn’t have thought they have any legal right to tell their members which political parties they think are acceptable.

I haven’t been able to support the CofE since weirdy beardy took over, he’s just a fruitcake.

I don’t see any problem with the CofE telling their clergy not to join the BNP.

The Catholic Church, DV will be pleased to learn, banned membership of the Fenian Brotherhood on pain of excommunication.

The difference is that the FB were a terrorist organization.
And the “problem” with what the Synod wants is that they have no power to tell clergy what parties they may not join, nor should they have.

    They do
Article 11: Freedom of expression and information

Article 2:Freedom of assembly and of association

    Click to access charter_364_01en.pdf

Note also Article 13: Freedom of the arts and sciences

Not much academic freedom for “AGW deniers” though.

This charter is always quoted by people wanting to free terrorists or criminals. The Human rights charter is a very worthy thing , in principle – but it was hijacked by the left and the “human rights” lawyers to do the opposite for which it was intended..
