LAUGH, I NEARLY PAID MY LICENSE FEE

Austerity – BBC style.

“The BBC is set to spend thousands on a “comedy conference” at a leading arts venue while its sparkling new multi-million media hub nearby is half empty. It has announced the event will be in The Lowry centre, Salford, parts of which cost more than £7,000 a day to hire, excluding catering. The October conference, close to the Corporation’s flagship northern home in MediaCityUK, where the BBC is struggling to attract staff, will also involve Channel 4, ITV and Sky.”

Had Cameron any spine he would not have signed up to a “freeze” on the BBC license fee, but instead demanded a 5% cut year on year for five years.

    Compare and contrast the NHS

Annual “Cost Improvement Plans”, familiar territory to anyone working inside his “pride and joy” the NHS, constant downward pressure on clinical budgets, contracted out cleaning, cheaper generic drugs, sale of surplus land, car-parking charges, cutting out unnecessary appointments, hospital at home schemes, anything to keep the ship afloat whilst cutting down excess cost.

Contrast the BBC, living high on the hog of six figure bloated salaries, goldplated pensions, hotel away-days, fine dining boardroom lunches, taxis and chauffeurs, first class travel around the world, five star hotels, budgets for gifts and flowers. And secrecy over “talent” pay.

I’d laugh if it didn’t hurt.

Now if only the BBC’s conference department which organise such challenging opportunities were asked to multi-task.
Starting with, Oh ! let me think … Ah yes !
Control of the BBC’s comedy output seems to be as a good a place as any to make start.
Let’s face it, we’re not talking about a high-bar here and I’m certain the BBC would benefit from uncontaminated ideas.
Well, until Red Ed calls for their abolition that is.

Unfortunately, this is all too common in the corporate world these days, which will be the BBC’s excuse.  Other people do it, so they are not to be criticized, right or wrong.

John Cleese made a small fortune from his corporate training film company, and this is the next step in that field.

In England we spell it licence. Americans have licenses.
