Celtic – as I’ve mentioned here earlier Our Justin’s casual mention of the use of Article 25 to remove a head of state evidences the casual anti democratic attitude BBC droids will express when something happens they don’t like .

I hope the US Ambo raises it with the managers of the BBC – although I suppose they’ll think this form of ‘free speach ‘ is normal for the ‘ beauties ‘ .

Switch on R5 last night — catch a snippet of Colin Murray with some American woman. 30 secs in, discover she’s a queer Muslim who’s written a book.

Morning — Emma Barnett talks to a WaPo journo, then a NYT journo who thinks closing the US borders is Trump thinking about reelection. Building walls is all he knows… it’s a very ‘Trumpian’ decision, he says. Nudge nudge, wink wink.

Then Guardian journo Lucy Mangan is on, she’s upset and emotional because she’s made the brave, soul-searching decision to not see her elderly parents for a bit while corona virus is a risk. Anyway she lives in central London and works for the Guardian, and it’s all emotional and upsetting and she works for the Guardian so it’s all upsetting and emotional. Emma’s there with the tissues. I wonder if we could set up some crowdfunding for an old Popemobile so her parents can visit, at least wave from the front drive.

The bloated bBC are strikingly frugal on their updates of the Salmond trial.

if that had been been an ex Tory senior minister the description from the first witness of the accused stripped to his socks would have been getting blasted out from every orifice of its organ.

    Not even a mention from the bBc…..no speculation about the socks…tartan? saltire ? L & R markings?
Nor a mention of the witness’s description of his state of arousal.

This slug should’ve been on trial for the Independence white paper he ordrered to be produced in 2014 …..that alone was an act deserving of a jail sentence.

Complete lies from the BBC. Absolute fake news. Note how different the reaction to the US announcement was compared to the reaction to Italy shutting the whole country down and today’s announcement by the Irish….neither of those two were presented as extreme or outlandish whilst every single thing Trump does is scorned, and mocked….one moment he’s not doing enough, the next he’s doing too much…even as the BBC keeps pressuring the government to close Britain down.

Trump bans travel from the EU Schengen area and the BBC goes into overdrive to fabricate a totally false narrative….one that this is totally exceptional and draconian and two that Trump has changed his tune…from being a total sceptic about the virus to being totally onboard….too much so in fact.

Emma Barnett dragged in Steven Erlanger, the NYT’s Brussels’ correspondent, and when I say Brussels’ correspondent I really mean the correspondent for Brussels…he is of course a never-Trumper, pro-Europe and works for the NYT whose declared intent is to oppose Trump at every turn…hardly an impartial commentator.

What we got from him was one long derogatory anti-Trump narrative…apparently Trump is doing this just to get elected…or maybe because he hates the EU…it’s all so irrational and unnecessary.

Erlanger made a joke saying he would have to go to London and buy a ticket from there to get back to America. Clearly a joke….US citizens aren’t banned from travelling home from the EU…as the BBC admits…

‘The ban applies to travellers from countries which are members of the Schengen border-free travel area.

The UK, Ireland and other non-Schengen countries are unaffected.

    US citizens are also exempt.

Barnett obviously didn’t know this and ran with the Erlanger joke as fact telling us how ridiculous it was that US citizens could get around the ban in that way…she repeated the claim talking to someone else later on.

The BBC then used a clip of Erlanger on the news….why? He’s just a commentator and a biased one at that….he isn’t ‘news’.

The BBC also insist thaat the travel ban is unprecedented and targets the EU whilst Trump doesn’t target anyone else.

Hmmm…first, it’s not ‘Trump’…he takes advice from his ‘experts’. Second….er….
    https://workpermit.com/news/coronavirus-us-visa-travel-ban-china-travellers-20200208

Trump US visa executive order banning foreign nationals who had been in China

‘On February 1, 2020 Trump signed an executive order banning all foreign nationals from entering the US who had been in China. The order came into effect at 5pm on February 2, 2020. Trump has been accused of ‘panicking’ by thousands of people affected by the travel ban.
the coronavirus travel ban was the first of its kind in response to a global, infectious disease outbreak.

According to White House sources, the decision to implement the ban was taken following the first confirmed case of the coronavirus in the US as a result of human-to-human transmission, identified by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

In his executive order, Trump wrote: “The CDC, along with state and local health departments, has limited resources and the public health system could be overwhelmed if sustained human-to-human transmission of the virus occurred in the United States.”

“Sustained human-to-human transmission has the potential to have cascading public health, economic, national security and societal consequences,” the executive order states.’

So basically any foreigner coming from China, and that obviously includes Chinese citizens, is banned….so the EU ban is not exceptional nor the first, nor has Trump been slow to react whatever he said…and what he said was undoubtedly intended to calm things down rather than deny the threat the virus might pose as the BBC claims….He has also signed off on massive spending to research and deal with coronavirus.

‘The United States will give individuals, and small and mid-sized businesses a three-month tax holiday to try to fight the economic impact of the novel coronavirus, President Donald Trump said Wednesday night.

It will also give affected companies $50 billion more in low-interest loans, he said. ‘

Plus $8.3 billion on the medical side…

‘According to CNBC, the spending package will make available $8.3 billion in federal assistance to government health officials and to support research and development of a vaccine. More than $3 billion will go to vaccine research, development, and therapeutics. Around $2.2 billion will go to preparedness and prevention efforts, and $1 billion will be used to purchase medical supplies and support Community Health Centers.’

Whatever you think of Trump’s ban and all the other draconian measures taken by Italy for instance, and personally I think it’s all madness, the polar reaction to Trump’s when compared to any other country is stark…the BBC guns for Trump and attempts to drag him down at every move regardless of the truth.

President Trump made a political decision which the BBC hive mind obviously disagreed with. Thus Comrade Webb suggested invoking the 25th Amendment against him.

This amendment is clearly intended only to be used if the president is actually unable to carry out his duties, not if he makes a decision which the BBC communists disagree with.

The fact that the Comrade Commissar Webb could even suggest it (all the while having no understanding of what the amendment means) just shows the contemptible depth to which the BBC has fallen.

      Defund it now!

I agree mate. BBC viewers should be required to pay a subscription. Also they should be required to have a BBC account and then log in before being able to view BBC programs. Surely under such a system the BBC stand to rake in billions of pounds instead of relying on the threat of a criminal record for senior citizens who refuse to pay for something for which they have no use.

This morning the BBC were telling us that setting up solar panels and a windmill were cheaper than setting up a coal fired power station to obtain electricity .

But for powering a city ….?

The solar boat video guy reckons that in winter at berth , his solar would only give him half his daily usage.
So he’d have to run his cruising engines to charge the batteries.

In the comments , no solar fan boys disagree with him.

    • StewGreen says:

Harra is as usual cheating by not taking into account the full cost cycle.

They shout that wind and solar are free and you just need to harvest them.

But so are fossil fuels .. they sit free in the ground.
For the Saudis the harvesting cost is very low.
Same for UK inland, but North Sea less so.
But still the government is able to put a huge mining tax on.

Sure we taxpayers could build solar power stations to replace gas ones
but we taxpayers would them have to cough up to replace that gas mining tax that is no longer flowing into government coffers.

So in practice it is very difficult for such solar electricity plants to ever have parity with coal and gas
Plus actually solar/wind are not proper power they are intermittents.
You in fact need to keep the same gas power stations open, but running on standby.
Thus they don’t run as efficiently as when running flat out.
So putting up the standby power component of your solar electricity set up.

Some have pointed out how Trump’s every action on Coronavirus is treated by the BBC with contempt.

I’m afraid it is exactly the same on Sky News, BBC News’ mini-me.

Amanda Walker the US Sky News correspondent who is cute and blonde, blamed the market falls around the world on everything Trump has said. The word disdain doesn’t do justice to her manner when discussing the President of the US.

Later, Ian King, who has been a national newspaper business editor since 2000, an editor on The Times and has won many Business news awards, said that the EU’s inaction and Madam Lagarde’s speech sent out the wrong signals thus crashing the markets.

Now I think said President can be big prat at times (esp. on Twitter or the golf course) but it has to be obvious to anyone with a brain that the action to ban flights into the US out of Europe was both timely and correct. It has now been followed by many individual countries within the EU.

For the first time in well over a year I listened to most of PM on R4 tonight. (5pm-6pm). Missed first 9-10 minutes. They had virologist Chris Smith on to talk about you know what. Later on a lady Doc was added to the contributors. She was a bit wet & weedy at first; Virologist Smith was calm & collected throughout.

Anyway, Non-Dr Snuffy is reassured that he has not been leading all on here astray. Chris Smith said most viruses fade away on surfaces “mostly in minutes, certainly within hours” but Dr Jarvis (think that may have been the name) said she had read or “seen a paper about Covid-19 that said up to three days.”.

Am relieved I did not post false info. Am even more relieved that the Snuffy memory is not fading as fast as it seems to be at times and I can recall things I have been told in the distant past by scientists/virologists/medics either directly or via the BBC.

The last point is absolutely valid. The media you mention finds fault with the government because it is in its DNA. However I believe that today the governement has made a fatal mistake and will live to regret it. Just when we needed pro active policies this government has let us down and embarked on a course that wlll either lead to it’s demise or its replacement by another government that will be demanded by a traumatised and frightened people.
The failure to close schools and stop big public events threatens us all such is the virulence of Covid 19. The rest of the world has at last understood the dangers. If it looks as if this lot have put the economics of the country ahead of a existential threat to life then it will fall and fall fast.
In life one sometimes has to face reality head on and act. Boris and his cabinet have failed.

      • JimS says:

Children in schools mainly keep company with those in their own classes so there is no reason for a virus to spread amongst a group that hasn’t got it.

Children not in school interact with the wider population so may be more likely to pick up the virus, they are also, in these days of working parents, likely to be sent to stay with grandparents, an ‘at risk group’.

Similarly ‘big public events’ are not necessarily bad. Someone attending a football match or concert will only be in close contact with a few people, whereas, bored out of their minds, they might go in for some ‘window shopping’ and come in contact with dozens of people.

Politicians like Johnson and Trump will be closely following the advice of their own experts and in these matters I would put more trust in them than some bimbo from the BBC or Sky.

        Agreed Dave.
I think Boris’ ‘Behavioural Scientists’ have it totally wrong. They, apparently, advise that any sustained restrictions on the public right now such as meetings, sports events and the like will run out of public enthusiasm in a short period. Then being of little effect when the main avalanche arrives. Seems they overlooked the main factor which I suggest is, that when human beings see and witness many dying (including relatives and friends) and getting seriously sick around them they sure, instinctively, will know that rubbing shoulders with others will likely be fatal for them or those they infect.
Another example of the ‘experts’ ignoring reality and assuming the public is thick.

There was a higher percentage of staff in medical roles (working as doctors in hospitals and community health services) from the Asian, Chinese, Mixed and Other ethnic groups than in non-medical roles. So are we really to accept that the NHS is racialist?]

Now legitimate debate on responses is fine, but given the bbc only fields those who say what the bbc wants, often to serve other agendas, I find bbc output less than helpful.

TOADY Watch #1 – An explicable Shower of Snowflakes – The Bad Weather Phase

The BBC are in full Labour Party Opposition mode this morning to the Government. They invite onto the programme Jeremy Hunt MP, former Secretary of State for Health and a rival to the current PM in the 2019 Tory leadership race. Jeremy Hunt plays – unwisely in my view – into the BBC’s hands.

Hunt agrees with the BBC’s leading questions that the UK Government – and by extension the PM – are doing it all wrong. Hunt is forgetting, like the BBC, some important facts about the UK.

      Coronavirus approach ‘concerning’.

      Story detail

To ban, or not to ban? While minsters say they must not move too early to prohibit large gatherings in a bid to limit the spread of coronavirus, former health secretary Jeremy Hunt says the decision to hold back is “surprising and concerning”. Measures announced by Prime Minister Boris Johnson included advising anyone with a “new, continuous” cough or high temperature to self-isolate for seven days. Testing will now only focus on identifying people with the virus in hospital. He says closing schools or cancelling sporting events at this point could do more harm than good, should people tire of the restrictions.

But the Scottish government has advised the cancellation of gatherings of more than 500 people, while Ireland has shut schools. And Mr Hunt says the UK is in a “national emergency”, with just four weeks until it reaches the stage that Italy is currently at. “You would have thought that every single thing we do in that four weeks would be designed to slow the spread of people catching the virus,” he argues. Susan Michie, professor of health psychology at University College London, suggests “nobody has the right answer”.

The effects of the virus continue to be felt around the globe. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his wife Sophie are in 14-day isolation after she tested positive. Australia is stopping gatherings of 500 or more people, not including transport or schools. Ghana and Gabon are reporting their first cases, while India has recorded its first death. Sport is increasingly affected. However, just eight new cases are reported in China. In football, Arsenal’s visit to Brighton has been cancelled after manager Mikel Arteta tested positive. Not reported in any UK media so far as I can tell is the denied decision by EU Fuhrer Angela Merkel to refuse to sell any medical equipment nor fulfil any outstanding orders to her European partners.
There is understandable fury in Italy that medical equipment including masks and aprons were turned back at the border by German customs officers.

It’s a massive story because Italy is already Eurosceptic and the actions of the lead nation, Germany in abandoning what it has championed for the past 5 decades is showing them in their true colours.

Germany they are saying wants us to do exactly what they want when the times are good, and talks a good talk, but when the times are tough, all that talk is abandoned as they simply look after themselves.

Gary Sport, one of the Sport twins and from memory rather elderly (he’s worked at the BBC for 40 years!) presents from the Cheltenham Festival while sounding quite husky. Gary presents the Jeremy Hunt statement as a fact in his question to the organisers of the Cheltenham Festival. “Why haven’t you cancelled everything?”

This is an event taking place in the open air. Sure, railings and handles and other things will be handled by possibly infectious people who have just covered mouths while coughing or handled handkerchiefs and might infect others.

People ought to be intelligent enough to know that all they need to do is wear gloves. Indoors and out. In late winter/early spring, when you would normally wear them. Especially while wearing posh outfits. And stay out of doors as much as possible. At an outdoor event. How hard is that?

    Unbelievable!

The BBC have been in the hilarious position this morning of completely contradicting themselves. The BBC were complaining about President Trump’s air flight ban at 6 a.m., a ban which was then followed by similar action to ban travel by other nations around the world. Then they are trying to complain that President Trump isn’t doing enough.

    You cannot make it up!

Or am I muddling that Tamiflu with something else, a different outbreak?

The Biasedbbc left-liberal irrationality is evident when it criticises the UK for following the science and on the other hand also the US for ‘not following the science’.

To compound this hypocrisy it suggests that there is a range of scientific views (who knew) and it is a political decision as to which evidence to follow.

Am thankful for Sir Patrick Vallance, a scientist, a doctor and Chief Scientific Adviser to HM’s Government and someone – at last – talking lots of sense about Covid-19 on the TOADY programme this a.m.. Tolerably good interview by Justin Webb for a change. Justin didn’t stand a chance anway against clear thinking and reasoning that was well-expressed.

If you didn’t hear it, I would strongly recommend listening to it via Radio iPlayer a.k.a. BBC Sounds a.k.a. BBC ‘Noises’. (BBC R4 8.10 a.m..)

It strikes me as very interesting that so many people have become so brainless and expect everything to either be done for them by Government or they have to be told what to do by Government.

We are entering an interesting phase in the history of the world.

C_M, I missed most of the TOADY interview with someone (French sounding male) who had been brought on to rubbish President Trump, rubbish the UK’s measures against Covid-19, dismiss President Trump, explain how Brexit is bad for Britain and the EU is wonderful, rubbish President Trump’s ban on air travel that other European nations copied within hours, pose questions about Christine Lagarde’s statement but mostly rubbish President Trump.

Oh, and did I mention the contributor complained about President Trump. He duly obliged the BBC in all of their desires this morning.

Sure, time will tell who has the best approach. I have to point out that the EU hasn’t taken any approach yet to Covid-19, authoritarian or otherwise. They appear to have been caught on the hop rather, firstly by the epi-centre of European infection arising in Italy and then the President’s air travel ban and the copycat action by individual EU nations, yesterday.

That may explain their ire, as expressed by the post 8.31 a.m. contributor to TOADY.

As I point out in my post below, we in the UK have been on this virus-thing right from the beginning.

Can I play ‘Metoo’? I caught the end of the interview with Sir Patrick Vallance on Today. Justin allowed him to speak and wasn’t trying to score political points. It made a fine change and allowed me to consider how the government is dealing with this.

I have to say how refreshing it was to hear the interview. The Daily Mail website has obviously not forgiven Boris for Brexit or winning the last election. They are screaming for the schools to be closed (in spite of the government explaining the reasons why they haven’t).

However Today moved on to I think it was something to do with black men in sport – I might be wrong – but it was something back to the old agenda and I switched off.

I feel like I’m living through an episode of Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy listening to the TOADY Programme this morning. Think I should change my registered name/posting name to Ford Prefect. “Don’t panic!” Permit me to share some reasons why we shouldn’t panic.

The UK has some distinct advantages in facing Coronavirus/Covid-19. Firstly, we are an island nation and have some other global advantages, time/longitude-wise. Secondly, we are a scientific, medical and bio-science nation. Thirdly, we have a national health service which although devolved across the four home nations does work in concert. Fourthly, we have a relatively open society news-wise. Finally, we have been ‘on this’ virus thing right from the beginning.

On that last point, because it started in China, we have had a massive advantage handed to us in the UK. China went – in my view – through some difficult phases but have really helped the whole world.

Firstly, they were in denial. Then they accepted it was happening and responded rapidly and progressively. Finally, they took an extreme measure and it appears to have worked. I recall that StewGreen posted stats yesterday for how the outbreak appears to have slowed substantially in China.

I think the BBC and others would do well to note the above.

As Sgt Phil would say: “Hey! HEY! Let’s be careful out there.”

@Up2snuff No I didn’t post about Chinese stats
      ..must have been someone else.

For the population to be safe, a lot of people need to get Covid19 to give some herd immunity.

Alternatively If we locked down the country for six months so no one gets it, as soon as we unlocked it would spread across the population cos there’s be no immune people to break the chain.

I smell the stench of burning human flesh, as the unspeakable ANC ‘liberate’ South Africa with their petrol filled tyre ‘necklaces’ in the eighties. As Winnie-Madikizela Mandela put it: “with our matches we will liberate the country”. The fate of anyone merely suspected of ‘collaborating’, a true reign of terror, that goes on to this day. It was all part of the ANC strategy of ‘making the country ungovernable’.
Why do I think of this? The ANC anthem is playing from somewhere in the house. I know immediately what the source must be: R4 has been left on. It is the pleasant-looking and soft-spoken Chris Riddell, artist and illustrator. Remember I said last Friday that if you will ever get a white male on desert Island Discs, it will be a lefty? He is the guest.
The ANC anthem brings a lump to his throat, he says. His parents were from South Africa, ant-Apartheid activists, and he was born in Cape Town. I wonder if he’s been back lately?
I know someone who is leaving CT for the US because of how much the city has deteriorated under the ANC government. From lack of water and electricity to boarded-up shops and crumbling roads and pavements. With deadly, rampant crime on the loose, as it is in the rest of the country, in which Cape Town is apparently the GOOD news.
In the countryside many hundreds of farmers and their families have been mercilessly slaughtered – no mention of this on DID, needless to say. Cities across the country are frequently without power or other basic public services.
‘Ungovernable’ indeed. SA is currently in the throes of EWC – i.e. the legalised theft of land. Productive land which, on the basis of very good evidence, will soon become unproductive land.
    Noughts and crosses, anyone?

#2 In the UK they only reliable metric is the number of people who have died of it.
