    Just thinking about omicron covid.
We can all accept I hope that case rates have been rising rapidly and any decisions which may or may not be taken should be done based on information.

So my question is why the hell is it acceptable for the taxpayer funded statisticians to go AWOL over the last week.

Some healthcare stats are now a week old. Given the speed of change that is an utterly pathetic situation. 24 hours old should be the requirement.

Whatever state we are in, you can be sure that the public sector will be looking after itself rather than the public at large.

And what is the BBC if not public sector?

Now that the BBC has decided that vulnerable young women victims of sex abuse in the USA are worthy of coverage as is coverage of the trial of the perpetrators, , may we expect equivalent coverage of vulnerable young women victims of sex abuse in the UK?

How about residents of Rotherham, Rochdale, Kirklees?
And maybe the BBC could include full coverage of the perpetrators?

    How about it BBC?
    No?
    Whyever not?

I see hyperbolic claims on Twitter
“see we have 332 Covid deaths in one day”
..Nope that tally includes a 5 day backlog.
There are sound reasons for looking at deaths by actual day , not registration day
and for using stats that are 7 day averages etc

The 7 day average of deaths has still fallen to just below 100/day

at a rate which is not exponential.
Peak is now 167K on Monday/Tuesday

This next week seems a bit unpredictable
However the general range seems to be tolerable.
They’ll be cases, but enough workers for most things to function.

The author’s caveat should still be out front and centre:

boy do I hope it’s not and that this article looks like conspiratorial garbage in a couple weeks!

              However…

Omicron “was detected on four foreign nationals who had entered Botswana on the 7th November 2021, on a diplomatic mission. The quartet tested positive for COVID-19 on the 11th November 2021 as they were preparing to return.”

Never seen before – popped up in 4 foreigners on a diplomatic visit to Botswana.

The incuriousness – reticence even of the international media is a concern – no?

ITV local news : A PRasNews story about a therapy dog that helps firefighters’ mental health.
… a very cosy and fluffy item.

Yet one of the volunteers in our circle told us, he had a hell of an experience a few months back trying to get help for a retired fireman who had repeated bad episodes where he almost killed himself
as PTSD leads to cope with lifes ups and downs.
.. The volunteer said as he tried to find a mental health service to help the guy he was just given the runaround.

I hear similar tales – but not being in possession of an actual TV receiver I’m spared the torment outside of hotel rooms and visits to pals who’ve a telly in the kitchen.

One of the worst culprits imho is the growth of editorial guidelines – where a response is sought before broadcast / publishing and the story goes no further if a response is not forthcoming. There’s a few brave souls out there but by and large it’s insipid, ignorant, cowardly and often badly skewed semi-literate drivel.

The broadcast and publishing media are getting increasingly irrelevant – many people simply now zone it out and daft sh!t creeps in – and that should worry everybody.

Watching the events in the court case in the USA re Maxwell, my conclusion is that there is a shit load of compensation cash at stake for both witnesses and lawyers involved. I think this is an American thing!

I would bet that if Epstein had not “died” in prison it’s unlikely that Maxwell would be facing trial, it appears to be a way of keeping money in the equation.

I just hope that if Annie Farmer (supposed victim) ends up with a wad, she spends the rest of her life thinking about another woman who’s life has been effectively cancelled by her. I hope she is able sleep soundly at night given that she obviously willingly agreed at some point to participate in events at Epstein’s mansion. Probably for the same reason – money!

We live in a pretty horrid World where truth is unimportant and the only winners are lawyers.

The Maxwell case involved dozens (?) or at least four victims . The Rochdale and other cases involved thousands .

There was a cover up by the authorities in the Rochdale case , there was no cover up by the authorities in the Maxwell Epstein case .

Senior politicians wanted the girls in the Rochdale et al cases to keep quiet for community relations . No politician anywhere has called for the girls in the Maxwells Epstein case to keep quiet.

And yet the BBC give more broadcast to the Maxwell Epstein case than all the other cases combined.

Annie Farmer is classed as a victim cos that is what the court found.
Nevertheless expressing an opinion doubting her is free speech.
And to get to truth we have to allow speech, which could later turn out to be false; as long as it allows accused people to go about their daily lives etc.

Significantly she was above the UK age of consent
BBC “said she was 16 when she was exploited by Maxwell and Jeffrey Epstein. ”

In principle Maxi has the right to challenge assertions, use outrage as rhetoric, and shout hypocrisy.
But I’d question if Mxi is doing that in good faith or deliberate mud slinging.

Year ends under cloud in dullest December since 1956‘ – or so says the Telegraph. In case you were wondering, they’re talking about the weather, rather than our entertainment outlook.

The Guardian of course looks forward to some global warming: ‘Record temperatures set to usher in new year‘ – that’s as maybe – simply saying it don’t make it so – but don’t expect any retraction if it don’t happen.

The Daily Mail puts on a brave face: ‘8-page guide to the films, TV shows, music, theatre, and books you’ll love in 2022‘ – I know we all like those categories of entertainment and the popular arts but are we really so confident the cultural products of next year won’t decline further than they did in 2021?

I don’t know about others hereabouts but I’m hunkering down to a diet of old stuff.

Not for me the Marvel & DC “Multiverse” of infinite iterations of superhero reboots. A veritable web-full of Spidermen. The SJW repcon undermining of once popular past franchises. The plethora surfeit of fiesty fem of colour character stunt castings. Mrs Brown’s Boys. The Oscars gone wild. Nothing to delcare of their talent – just their leftist political leanings. Politics posing as a thespian. 007 Jane Bond. Doctor Who chased by gay Pakistani Daleks up the Tardis wheelchair ramp… no doubt to the postumous amusement of Spike Milligan – who said he felt ill. Autotuned sampled warbling creeping nobodies still stuck in early 20-naughts X-Factor and Adele crooning up and down the scales about her divorce, the weight loss, her millions in the bank and why she’s still sad about it all. The Guardian introducing: ‘ArrDee Meet the ebullient voice of 2022‘ A pale yet supposedly un-stale British rapper from Brighton – where else? Wiki explains: ‘...stage name is derived from the phonetic spelling of the initials of his birth name, R=Riley, D=Davies‘. His still slim discography includes such inticing gems as: “Jiggy (Whiz)” and “Wid It” – I kid you not.

The FT amuses: ‘The best books, shows, music and travel of next year‘ – travel? Perhaps the audience the FT has in mind have their own private jets and contingent special passport arrangements.

Sport, anyone? ‘Footie headers ban call‘ (Daily Star)

We live in an increasingly feminised culture. ‘Christian Lamb. 101, the last surviving Wren from the Battle of the Atlantic, has spoken of the terror she felt plotting the positions of Royal Navy ships‘ (Times) – not half so much as the terror experienced by all those poor blokes out at sea actually on those ships.

Next war to be fought virtually by drones and robots on the ground directed via computer by women? I suppose that explains our military’s present recruitment strategy.

Sometimes you have to smile at the old Telegraph – someone do please gently nudge them awake and tell them that while the Torygraph has been snoozing on the job since about 1956 (Suez Crisis) Britain has become a broke, bankrupt, busted flush: ‘Truss: Britain will help Ukraine’s energy needs

Boris: A happy and incomparably better New Year thanks to heroic jab take-up‘ (Daily Express) – careful now, we don’t really want to portray the taking of these still experimental jabs as a form of bravery, do we?

Covid divide. Experts split over child jabs‘ (FT)

Croydon stabbing: Boy, 15, killed in London park‘ (BBC) old enough to be stabbed, old enough to be jabbed. Oh, and please note that I didn’t mention Prince Andrew.

Think you will find that Croydon is in Surrey, BBC. Just because you are in central London it doesn’t mean that every place inside the M25 is in London. I know you wish to serve Mayor Kahane’s expansionist cause but technically, strictly, Croydon is in Surrey. In addition, I wish you would not announce in the News quite so lightly that the tragic killing of another teen means that the death toll record of last year was equalled.

Yes, there is also a LB of the name Croydon but, iirc, LB Croydon and its residents do not have London post codes. Some of the ‘London’ thing about Croydon goes back to the early days of air travel before WW2. ‘Croydon’ was ‘London’s’ first airport.

I find Ian Maxwell (Today interview this morning) to be an interesting source of information.

He says that Ghislaine didn’t take the stand because there was “no need” to refute the obviously absurd claims of the prosecution witnesses regarding Ghislaine’s involvement. All the Maxwells, despite their cleverness, seem to lack emotional intelligence. The consistent testimony of the prosecution witnesses gave rise to the understandable public perception that Ghislaine was as guilty as hell of involvement. The Maxwells didn’t seem to realise that the public found the witnesses utterly credible and that Ghislaine was in trouble. Daddy wasn’t around to manipulate public opinion with a few choice headlines in his newspapers anymore.

In my view, the only way this perception might have been altered was if Ghislaine had gone into the witness box and denied involvement. With her classy demeanour, well-spokenness, and impeccable manners contrasting with the less sophisticated ways of her far-from-perfect accusers, it was the only strategy that might have saved her. Relying on a quack psychologist talking about false memories was a feeble defence.

Ian Maxwell wrote somewhere that Ghislaine was emotionally neglected until she was three years old. He presented this fact hoping to elicit sympathy for poor, innocent Ghislaine. But what he unwittingly did was merely reveal the psychological circumstances in which her evil nature undoubtedly formed.

In one way, I feel sorry for the Maxwells. Robert Maxwell’s parents and many of his family were murdered in Auschwitz. He was clearly warped by the experience and the psychological repercussions of that continue to have an effect down through the generations.

It’s all Adolf Hitler’s fault in the end. But then he had a terrible childhood too …

@Zelazek Robert Barnes the top American lawyer explained in the Rittenhouse case that it is standard practice in these US jury cases for the defendant to be advised NOT to testify
and that was the extraordinary thing that Rittenhouse’s lawyers had him testify.
He said that normally you let the other evidence speak for itself
cos what happens is if you testify the prosecutor will try to twist and misrepresent your words
so it is best not to give evidence.

We should not lose focus that Maxwell is NOT the main thing in the Epstein case
It is that rich powerful men got away ..and are still getting away
A lot of media must have helped in this.
That Maxwell is the pimps girlfriend

        Stew,

Good points and of course I agree that Ghislaine Maxwell should only be the first of very many to face prosecution. We’ve only just begun. The long-suspected existence of paedophile rings among the rich and powerful may finally be about to be proved and these elite perverts thrown into prison en masse.

But there is a danger that seeing Ghislaine imprisoned for the rest of her life (if that is her sentence) will assuage the public’s thirst for justice in this case. In terms of public revulsion, a woman who facilitates a crime in which children are involved gets twice as much attention as the man who actually commits the crime. Think of Hindley and Brady.

What happens next is going to be very interesting.

Hidden away in the Sheffield and South Yorkshire section of the BBC webshite is this disturbing story, first reported presumably in The Times.

    Quote .
The force at the centre of the Rotherham grooming scandal is not routinely recording the ethnicity of child sexual abuse suspects, a newspaper has found.
According to The Times, all four South Yorkshire Police districts failed to record details.
Rotherham, where hundreds were abused by gangs of South Asian men, omitted suspect ethnicity in 67% of cases.
    End quote.

Best way to avoid accusations of police racism? Just don’t report the ethnicity and/or religious persuasion of suspect paedos.

I’ve heard of gutter journalism, this appears to be gutter policing.,

Some of these sources are more reliable than others. But the gist of the claims that you will be able to hear, and ultimately watch in a three-hour documentary series, is that Maxwell, who was himself a conduit between the Israelis and other governments during his life time, introduced Epstein to Israeli leaders, who then allegedly used Epstein as the equivalent of an old-fashioned Russian “sleeper,” someone who could be useful in an “influence campaign.”

    Re Broccoli

Food has never been so cheap if you look around but it does make me wonder how farmers manage to make a living

Although you do have to have some sense, for example a £1 or £2 small steak or chicken pie in Tesco etc is a very expensive way of buying food if one actually looks at the amount of “meat” in it

I can go to a butcher and spend £5 or £6 on a large steak or chicken pie, made on site, filled (ie no massive, hollow airspace within) with real steak or chicken in it which can serve at least four or five people

I estimate one would have to buy at least 10 or 15 of the cheap pies to obtain the equivalent amount of filling which also bears no real resemblance to steak or chicken

“The 10 worst fact checks of 2021, and why they matter
When the arbiters of truth fell short

2021 marked another year of brazenly slanted media coverage, and the “fact-checking” industry, who’ve long cast themselves as impartial arbiters of truth, was no exception.

With former President Trump out of office and President Biden at the helm, media fact-checkers vowed to cover his presidency with the same tenacity afforded to his predecessor. But those tasked with verifying political claims and holding the powerful accountable spent much of the year fueling their critics with reporting that far more resembled partisan, left-leaning opinion than a just-the-facts approach.

“Critics say fact checks have become “fetishized” in the mainstream press as more declarative of the truth than a traditional news report, with eye-catching ratings like PolitiFact’s “Pants On Fire” or the Washington Post’s “Four Pinocchios.”

    Scientific American:
    The Psychology of Fact-Checking

    https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/the-psychology-of-fact-checking1/

Fact-checkers aim to get closer to the truth, but their biases can shroud the very truth they seek

Laboratory studies reveal that, when shown a video of a group of protesters, people see either a peaceful protest or an unruly mob blocking pedestrian access, depending on their sociopolitical beliefs. The world outside the lab shows similar biased perception: For example, 68 percent of Republicans consider the videotaped demonstrations in Portland, Ore., Kenosha, Wisc., and New York City to be riots, versus only 30 percent of Democrats, according to a Fox News poll released in September.

Consider the claim that during an interview with the progressive activist Ady Barkan, Joe Biden stated he favors defunding the police. This allegation has been dismissed as taken out of context and consequently false by some journalists and fact-checkers (e.g., Politifact’s Jon Greenberg), and CNN’s Facts First argued that Biden had denied he favored defunding in comments that were not included in the published interview with Barkan. However, others argued Biden’s statement about supporting “redirecting” funds to other agencies was a clear acknowledgement of his support of decreased funding for police.

Lots of context there did help Biden

A tweeter comments about bias within the Sciam article
When discussing Biden saying that he wanted to defund the police the authors provide 252 words of context/nuance

Trump’s fine ppl hoax gets 55 words and they don’t even admit that Trump explicitly said “I’m not talking about the Nazis”

How ‘fact-checking’ can be used as censorship

    https://www.ft.com/content/69e43380-dd6d-4240-b5e1-47fc1f2f0bdc

When Donald Trump said last May he was “confident” that a vaccine would be ready by the end of 2020, the US president was upbraided by NBC with what has become in recent years a popular journalistic and political device: the “fact check”. “Experts say he needs a ‘miracle’ to be right,” the broadcaster declared.

Facebook used the same device last week on a piece from UnHerd that criticised the World Health Organization’s Covid-19 investigation for dismissing the possibility the virus leaked from a Wuhan laboratory as “extremely unlikely”. The social media platform labelled the article with a “false information” tag, though the virus’s origins have not been established. Facebook alleged the article contained “information . . . that independent fact-checkers say is false”. After UnHerd objected, Facebook apologised; three days later the White House expressed “deep concerns” about the WHO probe.

I find these examples troubling. In both cases it wasn’t facts that were being checked. Perhaps Trump had no evidence to justify his confidence. But to “fact-check” his views feels to me like the politicisation of a device meant to support objectivity. Fact-checking can be a powerful tool in the fight against online falsehood. But it can be used as a means of censorship if not only facts but also opinions and narratives are checked.

Yes that is a sound FT piece from Feb 2021

Recently Facebook submitted to the court thati s FACT checks were not FACTS, but rather OPINIONS, so exempt from libel American rules etc. as they are just free speech.

“Fact Check” is a PRtrickery tool
Often it’s selective “fact spinning” to CONTRUCT narratives that support libmob agendas.

“For some reason he got really angry with her [Mandy] and started abusing her calling her a dirty chink. He said “take your f****** coronavirus and take it back home. I was shocked and angry so I shouted for him to stop and tried to push him away,” Ms. Solanki was quoted as saying by the Sunday Mercury newspaper.

he attack was over coronavirus outbreak. A spokeswoman of Birmingham Chinese Society said: “There has always been abuse. The virus has given some individuals a reason for that abuse.”

An Indian-origin woman, a trainee lawyer, in the U.K. fell unconscious after being beaten up by an unidentified man. She had tried to save her Chinese friend from a racist attack over coronavirus, media reports said, on Monday.

The incident took place when Meera Solanka (29) from England’s Solihull town was out with her friends, including her Chinese friend Mandy Huang (28) from London, celebrating her birthday in Midlands region.

Ms. Solanka was knocked unconscious and hospitalised after she stepped in when Mandy was told: “Take your f****** coronavirus back home!”, Birmingham Mail newspaper reported.
