I had been wondering what was happening with the ‘wildfire’ near Bordeaux. Google gave me a Times article which assured me that the fire was under control some days ago. The article told me about a fire on the Cote D’Or. It covers 123 hectares. If you live there I guess it isn’t good news. The area is the size of a small uk farm. Not exactly earth shattering or may I suggest newsworthy for people living in the UK.
My relatives have been allowed back to their homes . They say the authorities did a good job and there were no fatalities.

Yesterday the BBC news featured the Welsh Eisteddford.
A celebration of Welsh language and culture.
Not my cup of tea but a fine occasion for those that enjoy it.
But there was discontent. Welsh speaking is reducing in rural areas. An influx of English speakers is limiting the language in places. This is regarded as a negative. The BBC reported this as a negative.
But now let us consider another scenario. Where In some communities traditional English speaking British people are being marginalised by a great influx of non-British arrivals and BAME. Say Southall. Or Leicester. Or Bradford. Or Tower Hamlets.
Isn’t it exactly the same situation as in those Welsh villages? But can you for a microsecond believe the BBC would report such concerns in the same way as they did for the Welsh? Why, they’d be reporting about the rise of the Far Right and inherent racism.
So I conclude either that the Welsh are under-reported racists or that the BBC are full of newsroom hypocrites.

Where I am in West Wales, your third paragraph applies. My location is a strong Welsh speaking area and whenever I am present, they speak in English. If I am in a minority in that crowd, they speak Welsh. I have no problem whatever with that. Locally I always say I am a refugee having fled England >10 years ago. Why does your 3rd para apply? James O’Brien has made a humiliating confession over his support for Jason Arday. The LBC radio presenter and former host for BBC Newsnight had backed Arday after he resigned from the University of Cambridge. Arday was appointed as the youngest black professor at Cambridge in 2023. Last week, he resigned after mounting scepticism of his personal and professional claims led to a university investigation into his conduct.
The academic has been accused of plagiarism in his academic work, including his PhD thesis and other research. Arday’s recent work has been called “flawed”, with reportedly “impossible evidence” and inconsistencies. He also claimed to have published a book, but the publisher confirmed it was never released.
Arday said he was a visiting professor at Ohio State University, the University of Glasgow, and Nelson Mandela University, all of which deny the claim. He also claimed he had a master’s from Birkbeck and was an honorary professor at Durham, but the former had no record of him and the latter said he no longer held any roles at the university.
The academic made several other claims about being non-verbal until 11, only learning to read and write at 18, running marathons, being a semi-professional footballer, charity work abroad, and raising up to £5.5 million for charities over 20 years.
James O’Brien had previously accused The Telegraph and The Times of “studied and deliberate ignominy” after they revealed claims against Arday.
But on his LBC show on Friday, O’Brien said: “What’s your takeaway here? Because mine is very, very personal. I can’t separate the personal from the public. I feel like a mug, actually, is the short answer.
I don’t feel guilt. I don’t feel, ‘Oh, you should have done differently or you should have done better,’ because who would? Who would meet a Cambridge professor and immediately start thinking, ‘God, I wonder whether you actually deserve to be there?’. I certainly wouldn’t do that.
If I was a racist and I met a black Cambridge professor, then I probably would find myself thinking, ‘Yeah, really, a black guy, professor, I don’t think…’ – but I’m not a racist, so it didn’t cross my mind.”
He added: “But it’s more the personal contact that I’ve had with him subsequently that makes me feel like a mug. The fact that he thought I was someone that he might be able to persuade to stick up for him when he knew that he’d done wrong.

I saw my British doctor last week, as a ‘trigger’ on a blood test had started a trail for a consultation of some sorts. STARTS Some of the BBC’s veteran weather presenters could lose their jobs as the broadcaster seeks to boost its digital presence amid a cost-cutting drive.
Tomasz Schafernaker, Louise Lear and Darren Bett, widely regarded as the faces of the corporation’s weather coverage, are said to be considering taking voluntary redundancy as the BBC scales down its presenting team, according to The Times.
The move to reduce the number of national weather presenter roles from 11 to 4.5 forms part of wholesale changes to BBC Weather’s output, to respond to increased use of digital platforms rather than traditional news bulletins.
The corporation plans to cut costs by £500m during the next two years, which is expected to lead to the loss of up to 2,000 jobs.
Remaining forecasters are expected to be split between London and Salford, with an extra four weather reporters housed at a new BBC weather centre at the Met Office headquarters in Exeter, where they will deliver articles, videos and social media updates. ENDS

A convicted sex offender murdered two women, raped a third, and sexually assaulted others on public transport, after police, prosecutors and courts made a series of disastrous decisions that left him free to roam the streets.
A jury at the Old Bailey has now found Simon Levy guilty of the murders of Carmenza Valencia-Trujillo, 53, and Sheryl Wilkins, 39, in London last year – and also the violent rape of another woman in a car park.
Levy had been downgraded by the Metropolitan Police as a risk to women before he carried out the attacks.
The Met told the BBC it accepts the life of Wilkins could have been saved. The force had apologised to her family, it said.
Levy, a jobless loner who lived with his mother, attacked the three women while on bail for sex assaults on trains in London, and went on to carry out further assaults on public transport.
Details of his crimes on public transport, plus the sexual assault of a prison officer while he was in jail for earlier offences, can now be reported. He was convicted of them in February.
We can also say that between late 2024 and summer 2025 he was freed on bail by police, and then the courts, multiple times – even after having been charged with the sex offences and having broken his bail conditions.
He was also being monitored and risk-managed by the Met Police throughout.
We can also now report that:
Levy had already been in prison for two sexual assaults, and Scotland Yard downgraded Levy’s risk to women upon his release in 2024, a decision now under investigation by the police watchdog
The Met closed its investigation into the rape he carried out in January 2025 despite the fact Levy could have been identified
The force did not class Valencia-Trujillo’s death in March 2025 as a murder, or pass the case to specialist homicide detectives, until after Levy had killed again
The Met took three years to investigate and charge Levy with the sexual assault of the prison officer, with the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) also acting too slowly
British Transport Police’s (BTP) investigation into Levy’s sexual assaults was beset by delays, meaning he was not charged for more than six months, despite being filmed carrying out an attack
The Met and BTP both gave Levy back a stolen travelcard which let him travel without paying and commit crimes, including the first murder
There has been a “collective system failure” and it is a “tragedy beyond words”, Deputy Assistant Commissioner Kevin Southworth from the Met told the BBC.
Det Ch Supt Pete Fulton, from BTP, said the delay in his force’s enquiries on Levy “absolutely wasn’t good enough” and was down to “incompetence” by two officers who have since been moved to other roles.
The CPS has apologised for “shortcomings” in its attempts to have Levy Remanded in custody ….ENDS

I think Will made a very good job of it and would like to see him get his own show (at a watchable time) perhaps replacing one (or more) of JR Mogg’s 8pm shows as JRM is quite meek and too polite.
Nobody can replace Michelle Dewberry (Dewb’s and co) and Matt Goodwin is also excellent but Will has shown himself to be a very good panellist and commentator and should, like Matt, be promoted to his own show.

Perhaps the NHS will soon be providing translators for those patients who are native British so that they can understand the doctors and nurses!
As to their competence I have left my dental practise and moved to one where the dentists are British because I found that as my previous practise gradually became ‘increasingly diverse ‘ the standard of care dropped alarmingly. I have to travel much further but feel the level of competence is back to previous norms.
Did these ethnic dentists get degrees because they deserved them or because they benefitted from DEI? Imagine if those running nuclear power stations or nuclear submarines have DEI degrees !

I have a US-based friend who needs to fly a lot but will always check the pilots before deciding whether to take the flight. Plenty of people who were serving coffee as cabin crew one week end up in the cockpit the following week, having attended a 30 minute flying course and completed a short questionnaire about their ethnicity and gender.
