The BBC are collecting tributes to Scotland’s first Muslim MSP, Bashir Ahmed, who has died at 68. All well and good. The tributes are paid across the political spectrum, from Labour and the Lib Dems to Tories and SNP. The BBC also offer us a potted biography of Mr Ahmed. It’s fascinating to consider the way in which the BBC covers the news that the Middlesex have re-branded their one day cricket team from “The Crusaders”to “The Panthers”. I see that the BBC is giving great prominence to the “Binyam Mohamad is innocent” story, this time focusing on the Miliband/US angle. There is an excellent article by Melanie Phillips here on the way in which the BBC has handled the Carol Thatcher issue, well worth a read. As Melanie points out it is the totalitarian mindset of BBC1 Controller Jay Hunt which is so deeply disturbing, they just cannot see how arrogant and prejudicial they really are!
