Anon: The child was selected from the UK NOT London. Unless we’re being lied to about immigration, white kids are still the majority. Just.

I really don’t think picking a Muslim was a good idea, not with all the terrorism they’ve caused in London.

I won’t be watching the closing ceremony, I have no wish to be humiliated – not after the wonderful performance of our team. I’ll save my ‘viewing’ for when our team return and their parade.

The BBC humiliate us all, but they do so daily, but a Muslim, headscarf wearing foreigner as a representative, in a world full of Muslim terrorism and inhumanity is a true disgrace. No better than Hitler and his Aryans.

But if I am ashamed many others will be too – especially in the face of the pride in our team – it will not do any good. It will increase racial tension, send many more into the arms of the BNP, and be yet another reason for not voting Labour.

So, in the end they’ve scored an own goal for their cultural Marxism. That is the crumb of comfort to take from this.

Fascinating but they also sell Barbie-like dolls with faces.

I’m intrigued by the T-Shirt slogans:
Heaven is under my mummy’s feet ❓
    I change 5 times a day ❓
I’m Islamic feed me organic ❓

Can anyone guess the significance of blond, fair skinned and Western European dressed faceless dolls ?

Anon: The BBC should not have been allowed any say as to who took part. I would point out that even in London Moozlums are a minority. WHY did the BBC feel the need to select a Muslim girl? After all we don’t see many Muslim athletes in Team GB do we?

There are plenty of working class kids who are NOT Muslims.

Nonsense. Would there be an outcry if a West Indian, Sikh or ultra orthodox Jew had won? The one and only question is, was this a random choice and a hijabbed Muslim happened to win or did the BBC rig the competition?

Trust me. Most people will not like it.

And yes if the child had been Jewish, black, Chinese or whatever, it wouldn’t have matteresd.

AS soon as people realise the BBC chose her, it will kick off.

Anyone else noticed the short talk slipped into radio 3 every morning. The one on Saturday was a disgrace, a youthful, well fairly, intoned “slavery took africans to America. I went to a Grammar School and three universities and only recently found this out”. Another “educated” idiot, slavery was rife well before America was found. It was originally a tribal thing, then expanded, the Romans, ancient Greece, Egypt et al had slaves, a lot of white men were slaves. And he went to three universities?

    Deegee
It is your opinion is is nonsense, but not mine or many others. Let me tell you why a Muslim is a humiliating representative.

    1. The Muslim religion, through their own doctrine, is not compatible with our values. They believe only God can make laws not man – that is the basis of Sharia. That does not represent us.

    2. Muslims have killed 52 people in London in a terrorist outrage. And it was Muslim fundamentalisms (the kind that insists women wear covering) that has no regrets. They have further tried to do the same on a number of occasions. A symbol of Muslim fundermentalism does not represent us, and is, in my eyes, and insult to those who were murdered.

    3. Muslims in reasonable numbers according to polls outwardly hate us and our way of life. They do not want to integrate. They do not represent us.

    4. Muslims cause acts of terrorism around the world. They behead people they kidnap, they blow people up by using other humans (often women and the unwanted.) And as a way of life they condone honour killing, stoning, etc, etc, etc. They do not represent us.

So, to answer your question. A West Indian is a foreigner so not a good representative. I presume you mean a British person who is black – answer no. If the competition was fair. I don’t see black people refusing to integrate, dealing in hate literature, and marching through London wishing death on us all. The same goes for both Seiks and orthodox Jews. None of these would be humiliating. It is you who are prejudiced towards my views, with the whitewash of racism.

However, if you saw a child with an Aborigini background representing Japan, would you not be a little surprised? Personally, I think it would have been better for a number of children from a variety of backgrounds to represent us – and yes then we could even have included a moderate (ie non headscarf wearing) Muslim.

Does anyone know at what age Muslim girls normally start to wear the hijab?

10 years old seems ridiculously young.

Could this be more a ‘political statement’ on the part of the parents?

If so – what are they trying to say? That they support the terrorists and extremists?

It is a simple statement of fact. He appears to be talking about how Africans came to be in America, not about slavery generally.

So you are saying that if the BBC conducted a fair competition and a hijab-wearing Muslim had won (presumably the present case – absent proof to the contrary) then the contest should have been rigged to produce a more acceptable candidate?

I’m curious how you would go about this. Did the contest form include a space for a photograph? Is the girl’s name, Tayyiba Dubhwala, sufficient evidence to disqualify her? What operational steps would you take to check out whether a candidate is moderate? Would not all of the above be illegal?

I don’t know if the result was fixed or not.(I am here dependent on other contributors I did not know there was a competition let alone the result of it))It is though the result we would get if either the uber liberal BBC or a government desperste to appease the Muslims any way they can had done a fix.

As few outside the government or the BBC would be happy to be represented by somebody who clearly rejects British culture and given the BBC’s previous history we must be suspicious.

From the 2001 census 3% of the population was muslim. Allowing for immigration since then and their high birth rate (usual in cultures that hate women) it is still probably no more than 6% at worse. There will be illegals on top of that I am assuming they would not be entering competitions. So there would be a one in 15 chance of getting a Muslim. A girl though? How many Muslim fathers of the sort that force their daughters to wear traditional dress would allow them to take part in a competition to represent a country they hate? Very few. I would not be supprised to find out that the family had a link with the BBC the government or some organisation that gets government funding.

Me again. just looked up the girl on the internet. On the publicity photo she is wearing normal clothes. So if she does turn up in the stadium in ‘traditional’ dress we will know the BBC or the government is making a political statement.

Nice, BBC. Don’t let anyone ever say that you aren’t bigotry-ridden.

And I’m sure that they think this is perfectly okay.

Why don’t they make unpleasant generalisations about other nationalities? Whole races or religions? Because that, of course, would be wrong.

Why should a Muslim be chosen?
    Martin | 24.08.08 – 11:36 am | #

I never said that a Muslim should be chosen. I said that a ‘fair’ contest should allow for that possibility.

The BBC has an obligation to obey the laws of the United Kingdom including Human Rights and Fraud laws. If, as several contributors to this thread, have advised there is active discrimination against hijab-wearing Muslims this would be illegal. Lecturing me about the evils of Islam won’t change this or be a sufficient defence in court.

Given the recent BBC scandals involving contests I, too, am suspicious of the convenient choice but I have no proof. Should evidence come up it will be yet another well-deserved nail in the BBC’s coffin. Until then no amount of teeth gnashing will change who walks with David Beckham. (BTW Did he win some sort of Blue Peter contest? 🙂

“The BBC features rather prominently in the handover show, doesn’t it?
    How bizarre.”

    Prominent? Explain.
    Bizarre? Explain.”

Because from the advance information about the ceremony, it appears that it will feature the BBC. Actually feature the BBC. With it’s World Service call sign “This is London”, and with the Shipping Forecast.

I quite like the Shipping Forecast. It’s the best thing the BBC does. But I do find it peculiar that in choosing things to define itself in a short time to the whole world, the BBC is selected as one of those things. Is British national identity really so closely tied to the BBC, that when it has eight minutes to present itself, it should feature?

Perhaps so. But I find it bizarre.

Looking on the bright side, though, the wave of anger that is likely from those who see this on their screens (I will not be among them – I think the Olympic Games is the biggest bore since the Channel Tunnel), is likely to help wash away the BBC when the time comes.
