Now that the government is trying to suppress the virus rather than let it infect and immunise mainly fit people who will probably not suffer much of an illness, what happens when the suppression stops and no-one has that fabled herd immunity…the virus breaks out again and it all starts again?….years and years of suppression and oppression?

‘The government’s initial strategy was to mitigate the virus and allow for a controlled peak of the virus in the summer – around June – and in the build up cocoon vulnerable sections of society so as to reduce fatalities. On Monday, Johnson drastically increased social distancing measures affecting the whole country – from working from home to avoiding pubs and restaurants. A report from the Imperial College Covid-19 response team advising the government has revealed some of the thinking behind the approach.
They modelled different strategies for dealing with the coronavirus. The first – to do nothing – would result in 81 per cent of the population becoming infected and 510,000 deaths by August. The second was mitigation – which is what the government appears to have been practising over the past week – by protecting vulnerable groups which would likely result in 250,000 deaths as the infections would overwhelm intensive care. Feeding into the revised effectiveness of the mitigation strategy is intelligence from Italy that shows a much higher percentage than anticipated who become infected require intensive care – with around 30 per cent requiring ventilators or ECMO machines. This information has changed the calculations being made over the NHS’s ability to respond.
The third response is that which is currently being practised in China: suppression. This involves countries going into lockdown and extreme social distancing. If practised, the report suggests it could limit fatalities to tens of thousands if not thousands – ‘suppression is the only viable strategy at the current time’. However, the big issue with suppression is there is no end date. Given that it doesn’t lead to herd immunity, it rests on a vaccination arriving sooner rather than later. The report estimates that this could take 18 months – as soon as you lift the measures there is an expectation that the virus will spread again.’

Pug, we all know that the NHS is a bloody money pit ! Trillions have been poured into it over the past decades and its still no better off ! Its always more, more, more regardless of which party is in power.
The institution needs a complete overhaul with someone at the top who has a business mind and experience, instead of the one time nurses who make up most of the admin staff – did you know that ?
I worked for years in the NHS and was staggered to learn that when nurses can no longer climb the ladder after reaching their top pay grade, they take an administrative course and forego their medical training to move sideways in order to climb further up the ladder, thus earning more money. I made the comment to one ‘ex’ nurse, that I wouldn’t dream of putting myself on the ward without training, so why do they think they can do admin work without similar experience ?
The Chief Exec of the hospital I worked at was exactly that – an ex mental health nurse, yet here he was, managing a budget of millions. When we wanted some shelves putting up in the photocopying room, nothing fancy, just a couple of shelves for the paper, the cost was…….. just under £600 SIX HUNDRED POUNDS !!!! It doesn’t take a mathematician to work out how much money is wasted throughout the NHS.
So, next time you hear that we are short of thousands of nurses, and doctors (locums who ‘holiday’ from other hospitals can command nonsensical amounts for a 2 week shift), just give a wry smile, because its a money drain with no one at the top in overall charge to say enough is enough !
Pug, I wonder where they get the 510,000 deaths from? The BBC showed some very complicated formulas supposedly used in the ‘modeling’. Actually, very good scientific estimates can be made from a few facts and a bit of logic with answers accurate to less than one order of magnitude.
At least that is what I was taught, so, how many of the population are over seventy and have a potentially serious health condition? There are some unknowns eg what percentage of the above group do not get infected? etc etc. All models though are based on a number of assumptions..

The oil traders and refineries are either currently not passing on the effect of the lower oil price to retailers – or – retailers are using cheaper wholesale prices to build themselves a cash buffer in case road traffic faces a severe reduction for whatever reason.
When road fuel prices fall, they will help the delivery companies, Royal Mail, other carriers, supermarkets and the online retailers.
Shame someone with high profile, influence and some balls doesn’t stand up and say the same here as the country is hijacked and destroyed…..

Yes, I have fond memories as a young man, working on the Oldbury Power Station in Gloucestershire in the early 60’s. The main contractor was, Sir Lindsay Parkinson – British. The only foreign element was the Sikh/Hindu (don’t recall which was which) workforce who crafted the steel reinforcing for the reactor bases. Oldbury commenced generation in 1967 and ceased in 2012 – 45 solid years – problem free. A testament to British design and workmanship (apart from the reinforcing….).
Well some good news. I won a complaint against the BBC and they reinstated a post.
I posted that it was immoral and fascist for a private company, the BBC, to be prosecuting and having people jailed for not paying it.
Not surprising really that the BBC pulled it. You can’t have people pointing out what the BBC is really like on their own website. Otherwise you can’t claim its what people want.
So I appealed, went through line by line, against their posting guidelines. It was put back up.
So in conclusion, its clear the BBC think they are fascist.
