Here’s one for the oldies: the attention span of a gnat younger generation have come up with a new phrase –

listening to a full musical record from start to finish in one continuous session without skipping tracks.
They’d hate listening to vinyl on my turntable then. I have a Rega Planar which is fully manual. Switch it on the start the turntable and pick up the arm and put it in the record then take it off at the end. If you want to switch between 45s and 33s you need to take the acrylic layer and glass platter off and move the belt to a different pulley. They’d never listen to anything.
When I collected my late dad’s Sony Music System, (remember them), the turntable had a speed well above the 45 or 33 rpm requirement… (Perhaps I’d dropped it in the move…).
The only way I could get some sense out of it, was to take a wine bottle with a decent punt at the bottom, and sellotape a sort of cardboard cutout of ‘The Angel of The North’ on the neck, and then plonk it over the label on the turntable!
It did actually work, as the air pressure on the ‘arms’ just slowed the whole thing down, but it all looked utterly ridiculous! A good friend laughed his head off when I told him, but I got my own back on him by offering him a really rare piece of music which he dribbingly coveted – for free.
He couldn’t take up the offer, as it was on a C90 cassette…
Interesting – i use YouTube more than the bbc now – but x3 I have gone to watch something – only to be accosted by the sight of a Muslim third worlder making a ‘speech ‘… I think she might be the Marxist candidate for TTKs seat – labour must be spending serious money on the campaign- im not even a voter …

The post-colonial period in Africa saw nationalist aspirations for development entangled with the quest for industrialisation. However, the national experiences of industrial and economic development in this era have been marked by varying degrees of disappointment. Kenya, like much of Africa, has failed to engender the levels of industrial growth and subsequent levels of development to which it aspired. Much of the explanations for Africa’s disappointing record of industrial development have focused on two central factors: the structural constraints on industrial development and the policies that were pursued. In many ways, these factors are inherently linked to a colonial legacy. Africa’s disappointing record of industrial and economic development cannot be divorced from its historical context. It is thus necessary to consider the extent to which the structures that were in place at the end of colonialism predetermined the pattern of development that would emerge in the post-independence era. When evaluating the post-independence experience of industrial development, two specific colonial legacies stand out as decisive: ‘colonial under-development’ and the ‘policy inheritance’. This article argues that although these legacies were profound, it was ultimately the dynamics of post-independence realities that determined the path of development.

The village is (Hopefully) due to expand greatly, and this will include over a thousand single men of voting age. Any future ballots will have to include them, no? Research summary
The study is looking to see the sexual behaviour of HIV positive men who have sex with men in the UK, Greece and Spain. In particular, we’ll be looking at how common ‘Chemsex’ is amongst men who have sex with men who are attending a clinic for HIV care, in clinics in the UK, Greece and Spain. ‘Chemsex’ is the use of certain drugs (crystal meth, ketamine, mephedrone, cocaine and GHB/GBL) when having sex. It is an anonymous questionnaire, so no personal details are collected, and it will not be seen by the doctor or nurse nor recorded in the patient’s notes. There will be some questions about whether participants use ‘Chems’ and also about sexual behaviour, sexually transmitted infections and a few details about HIV treatment. There will also be questions about general physical and mental health and whether there are services available if there is a perceived problem related to using ‘Chems’.

STARTS Lambeth Palace has withdrawn an “interfaith” award the Archbishop of Canterbury gave on the anniversary of 9/11 to an Islamic cleric who honoured Osama bin Laden.
Dame Sarah Mullally presented the “reconciliation and interfaith” award to Hafiz Tahir Ashrafi, chairman of the Pakistan Ulema Council, a group of Islamic scholars, at a ceremony at Lambeth Palace on Sept 11.
Mr Ashrafi’s council awarded Bin Laden its highest honour in response to the UK Government giving Salman Rushdie a knighthood in 2007, describing him as a “Muslim warrior”.
The cleric praised Bin Laden, whose terror group killed 2,977 people in the 9/11 attacks, for targeting British people
If a blasphemer can be given the title ‘Sir’ by the West … then a mujahid who has been fighting for Islam against the Russians, Americans and British must be given the lofty title of Islam, Saifullah,” Reuters reported him as saying.
Saifullah is an honorific originally awarded for military prowess and is an Islamic name that means sword of God.
Mr Ashrafi told the AFP news agency at the time: “We are pleased to award the title of Saifullah to Osama bin Laden after the British government decides to bestow the title of ‘Sir’ on blasphemer Rushdie. This is the highest title for a Muslim warrior.”
He also described suicide bombings in Afghanistan as lawful, supported Islamic blasphemy laws, which carry the death penalty, and claimed Jewish people and Christians were using the war in Iran to target Iran’s nuclear weapons.
Lambeth Palace said in a statement on Thursday evening that the award had been withdrawn.
It said: “The award was given for Imam Ashrafi’s longstanding support for religious minorities in Pakistan, particularly the Christian community – support that is valued by many Christians in Pakistan including its Anglican Church.
“It is a longstanding principle of interfaith dialogue and co-operation that we must engage with one another across deeply-held differences, and that remains the case.
“However, previous comments made by Imam Ashrafi have come to light that have led Lambeth Palace to reconsider this award and we can now confirm today that the award has been withdrawn. We have contacted Imam Ashrafi to make him aware of this decision.”
‘The naivety of the Archbishop is staggering’
Nick Timothy, the shadow justice secretary, said: “The naivety of the Archbishop in presenting an award to someone who openly praised Osama bin Laden is staggering – and on the anniversary of 9/11, too.
“Our leaders must face up to the reality that not all cultures are based on the same foundations as ours, and not all share our desire for co-operation and freedom.
“Western political and religious leaders should stand up vigorously for our own values and achievements, rather than apologising for our history or celebrating those who seek to do us harm.”
Travis Frain, a survivor of the 2017 Westminster Bridge terror attack and founder of the Resilience in Unity Project, the terror-victim support group, said it was a “grave misjudgment” by the Church.
“Giving an award for ‘interfaith and reconciliation’ to a man who honoured Osama Bin Laden, the architect of misery for so many of all faiths and a man responsible for thousands of deaths, shows a grave misjudgement by the Church – made even more egregious by the fact that this award was given on the 25th Anniversary of the September 11th Attacks,” he said.
“I would urge the Archbishop to meet with victims of terrorism to appreciate the hurt that this award may have caused, and to understand the real work being led by hundreds of brave survivors across the country to bring people together of different faiths and backgrounds under the banner of preventing the spread of radicalisation – far apart from those would seek to honour the perpetrators of these heinous attacks.”
Tim Dieppe, head of public policy at Christian Concern, said: “The absurdity of this beggars belief. How can a Christian leader give an award for reconciliation to someone who has honoured Osama Bin Laden? To someone who supports the draconian blasphemy laws in Pakistan which are a source of persecution of Christians? Mullally is clearly uninformed about both Ashrafi and about Islam.
“The only justification for meeting such a man is to pressure him about the treatment of Christians in Pakistan. There is absolutely no justification for giving him an award. Mullally should issue an immediate apology to Christians who are being persecuted in Pakistan. She should call for an end to the draconian blasphemy laws there.”
The Rev Dr Ian Paul, an Anglican theologian and member of the General Synod, said: “I understand that, in Pakistan, he has contributed to reconciliation. But I think members of the Church of England will struggle to make sense of this in the light of his past statements about blasphemy, the death penalty, and suicide bombings, and how he is accompanied by a woman in a niqab.
“It will do harm both to the confidence of Anglicans in their own church and to the reputation of the Church of England among both its critics and its supporters.”
A spokesman for Mr Ashrafi and his council said his remarks had been taken “out of context”.
He said: “Our position against terrorism, extremism, suicide attacks and the killing of innocent people is clear and unequivocal. We have consistently worked for peace, moderation and interfaith harmony.”ENDS
