Although the government has written to bodies such as the FA to show support for Israel – it seems the FA won’t be putting the Israeli flag on wem ber Lee for tomorrow nights’ international game .
It just shows the trouble caused when some things are supported a lot and some not so much . And the hypocrisy of ‘taking the knee ‘ is just that …

How many more Palestinian civilians have to die before the Labour front bench admit that what’s going on far exceeds any right to “self defence” that Israel has?

Amazingly not on the QT panel after all.

    This reply is on point.

“Hamas could always just stop firing rockets and surrender.”

That Champion is a frequent studio guest is still bizarre.

I’ve tried to send personal thanks to all the people who’ve sent me kind and supportive messages, but there are too many of you. So thank you — with so much rage and unreason flying about, it’s good to know that plenty of people are thinking and listening and staying rational.

    Goes… badly.

As the self-elected arbiter of reason and rationality his, and the BBC’s, fall back on a now tarnished credibility is laid bare.

Spiral of doom in this psychotic episode – or is as usual just an edition?

That’s the giveaway freebie advertising sheet Metro screamer headline that presents us with the: Spiral of doom

That’s designed to make you want to pick it up and see the ads. I always think back to my imagined ideal irresistible ultimate headline I once invented for the use of the London Evening Standard: “All Commuters Must Die”

The jokey blokey Daily Star frontpage, besides their main headline and their trade mark: Thought for the Day, carry a minor feature that teases a page 8 report:

    Fascinating* facts about mushrooms

    *it’s a slow day!

    – that self-effacing, self-aware reflection there constitutes – almost – what comics would term a mic drop moment.

The satire of course hightened by the fact that every other national title and tv and radio broadcaster is current salivating at the prospective plethora of their favoured news content impending an Israeli full-scale military incursion into Gaza.

Delivering a surfeit of what that former no nonsense editor of The Sun, Kelvin MacKenzie, memorably termed Foreign-Bang-Bang. He bravely entered the right-on lefty lion’s den that is BBC Newsnight so as to debate against female journos who were habitually PRESS emblazoned flak-jacketed and helmeted types, addicted to rubble-visiting, wailing widow-interviewing and think-of-the-children empathy gushing, but essentially in-house media awards-chasing.

He wasn’t saying don’t report it, but give us a break.

It’s not that war trumps other topics per se. Otherwise we’d still have detailed daily updates on events in the Donbas. Not that we actually ever had those – for whatever reason.

    Anyway, point made I think.

That Daily Star filler story about mushrooms got me interested to look out other slow news day type features.

Our BBC online delivers a doozy of the genre with: Swanage Railway T3 class No. 563 steam locomotive returns to action – it’s not that one scoffs at the news of a restored vintage steam engine lovingly preserved by enthusiasts. It’s the headlining of the comedically appropriate-sounding location Swanage – of course the Thunderbolt of The Titfield Thunderbolt (1953) fame was located at Titfield – and then there’s the BBC’s near autistic T3 class No. 563 (Tom Hepworth & Stephen Stafford, BBC South – and long may they continue to report quite obviously ’embeded’ with the train enthusiasts – as war correspondents describe Embedded reporters and photographers as those attached to a specific military unit and permitted to accompany troops into combat zones within and under the controlling influence of one side’s military).

The Star has another side issue funny story for us to upset the chaps at the pub: Global warming ruining our beer – don’t laugh, the BBC went with this one yesterday: Climate change could make beer taste worse

    Global Warming or Climate Change?

The BBC of course careful as always to relay the properly authority-approved wording and strict editorially enforced terminology at all times. Or not, as the case may be: The King accuses Hamas of ‘barbaric acts’ as BBC face calls to drop the ‘militants’ term (Telegraph) – they can’t answer back, you know. The royals, I mean. The BBC is certainly no shrinking violet when it comes to snapping back and has in-house champions more than happy to come out fighting its critics: Why BBC doesn’t call Hamas militants ‘terrorists’ – John Simpson (BBC)

Where were we? Ah yes. Those little side issue stories that still yet make the frontpages.

The Daily Mail has a feature on cottage cheese: The hot ‘new’ diet craze… The lefty-leaning ‘i’ newspaper has: Opinon by Abby Clancy My husband Peter gave me the ick

“The ick” was first coined by Ally in TV show Ally McBeal, and, as dating expert Hayley Quinn explains, “It’s a dating term that means you get a sudden cringe feeling when you have romantic contact with someone: and become almost immediately put off by them.” (Thank you Cosmopolitan magazine)

I’m reminded of that gangly gawky 6 foot 7 (2.01m) Peter Crouch’s response to the question of what would you have been were you not a professional footballer – a virgin.

Frankly, one might have swooned over her in prim starchy 1940s khaki uniform as ‘Sam’ Samantha, Michael Kitchen’s driver, in Foyle’s War – but I’m afraid today it’s a resounding Calm Down Dear for: Honeysuckle Weeks ‘I was supposed to play the Queen in The Crown but had a psychotic episode’ (Telegraph)

Now if that wartime Mechanized Transport Corps uniform costume were to become the outfit in which we saw the likes of Orla Guerin, Kate Adie and Lyse Doucet…? We might perhaps excuse… or perhaps not.

June 3, 2019 – Mid-May, Jewish and Israeli scholars, many of whom specialized in anti-Semitism, Jewish history and history of the Holocaust, sounded alarm about the growing tendency to label supporters of Palestinian human rights as anti-Semitic. They did so in a call addressed to the German Bundestag in relation to several motions that were being tabled against the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement (BDS). Many of us signed this call.

On May 17, one of these motions, sponsored by CDU/CSU, SPD, FDP and Bündnis 90/Die Grünen, was adopted. We reject this motion, which is based on the false allegation that BDS as such equals anti-Semitism. We call on the German government not to endorse this motion and to fight anti-Semitism, while respecting and protecting freedom of speech and of association, which are undeniably under attack.

The United States has reportedly increased pressure on Israel about its arms sales to China, and Israel has given assurances that it will not export any item that could harm U.S. security, according to U.S. and Israeli officials in January.

U.S. concerns about Israeli arms sales to China have existed for more than a decade and came to a head in July 2000 when the United States persuaded Israel to cancel the sale of the Phalcon, an advanced, airborne early-warning system, to China. Afterward, U.S.-Israeli differences over arms sales to China publicly receded but resurfaced in early January when the Israeli newspaper Ha’aretz reported that the United States had recently asked Israel to end all arms sales to China.

In August and September 2022, Leicester, England, saw a period of religious and ethnic tension between predominately British Hindus and British Muslims of South Asian origin. The unrest saw rioting, protest marches, sloganeering and ethnic violence between the two populations. It was also preceded by social media campaigning, misinformation and hate propaganda. Muslim apprehensions of what they regarded as “Hindutva fascism” entering their neighbourhoods was evidently the main driver behind the unrest.[1][2] Community leaders and analysts point to the Indian celebrations following the India–Pakistan 2022 Asia Cup match on 28 August as a catalyst, which saw a reaction from Pakistani fans.[3]

Birkenstock: Once-uncool sandal maker now worth billions

I was wondering why I was getting a bunch of social media posts from the UK state broadcaster about a yuppie German retailer of zero interest footwear.

Maybe the state broadcaster should not meddle in rigging brand PR?

In a mission named Operation Turus, the RAF (UK Airforce) conducted air reconnaissance over northern Nigeria for several months, following the kidnapping of 276 girls from the town of Chibok in April 2014 (by Islamist militant group Boko Haram). “The girls were located in the first few weeks of the RAF mission,” a source involved in Operation Turus told the Observer. “We offered to rescue them, but the Nigerian government declined.

Asked what Israel is doing to alleviate the impact of airstrikes on Gaza’s residents, Israeli President Isaac Herzog said his country is working “according to the rules and international law”.

He told @ragehomaar “we are at war, we are defending our homes, we’re protecting our homes”.

I am tendering my resignation because for some time past I have been conscious that I was wasting my own time and the public money on doing work that produces no result. I believe that in the present political situation the broadcasting of British propaganda to India is an almost hopeless task.

The BBC’s chief international correspondent was told to move for her own safety while broadcasting live from Israel.

Black smoke was rising and there was a risk of potential mortars landing in the area of Ashkelon.

Lyse Doucet confirmed she was safe to keep broadcasting and explained it was “a situation Israel has never confronted before”.

He is also part of the loose grouping of public intellectuals known as the ‘Intellectual Dark Web’. In this interview he discusses the origin of the book and the response to it, particularly his disappointment that few reviewers were able to refute his central point.

Comment : “Get Douglas back to discuss his current book “The Madness of Crowds: Gender, Race & Identity”. That central thread of our culture losing the plot and turning to a narrative with very shaky foundations runs through it too.”
